Lyrics
Without Shame
Two outfits then to my name
You’d end up in one when you’d stay
We had nowhere to go
And every desire for going there
I heard once
It’s the comforts that make us feel numb
We’d go out with no way to get home
And we’d sleep on somebody’s floor,
Wake up feeling like a millionaire
Wish I’d known it was just our turn
(We just got by)
Being blamed for a world we had no power in
(But we tried)
You and I had nothing to show
(We didn’t know…)
But the best of the world in the palm of our hand and darling
(…anything darling)
I haven’t felt it since then
I don’t know how the feeling ended but I know being reckless and young
Is not how the damage gets done
One time we would want for nothing
(One time we had it all love…)
We knew what our love was worth
(…when we had nothing)
Now we’re always missing something
I miss when we did not need much
If the car ran, the car was enough
If the sun shone on us it’s a plus
And the tank was always filled up
Only enough for our getting there
That first car was like wings on an angel (You flew away…)
Before the whole wide world got too thin
(…from me then)
I swear goodwill kept up the engine
You were steering my heart like a wheel in your hands and darling
(Turn back darling)
I haven’t felt it since then
I don’t know how the feeling ended but I know being reckless and young
Is not how the damage gets done
All I needed was someone
When the whole wide world felt young

This song is about being broke but being happy, being young and reckless, getting older, going from being the younger generation to the older generation, the feeling of losing your childlike joy in life, losing the carefree feeling of love between two people as time goes on, needing love in a world that feels empty, reaching out for the person you used to be, and wondering how you got here from there… bittersweet love, nostalgia, happiness and sadness….

Brandi is flawless. She is soaring in this. That note when she comes in “ooooh if the car ran the car was enough” I could play this over and over and over and never ever tire of hearing it. This needs to be a single. I want the music video. I want to hear it on the radio. I want it to be the title on a movie soundtrack. It’s my favourite song of the year hands down. I want a whole album of Brandi and Hozier together.

@@mandywhite7452 I keep thinking about this a lot lately. I actively appreciated those days while living them, at least one aspect anyway. It doesn't take away the pain of the good times being gone, and I'm left with the memory of me being worried constantly that these are the best times of my life and they will be over soon. Add to this the fact that my choices seemed good and logical at the time, and still led to me missing out on a lot of other things that cannot be recuperated now. It was one or the other and now all is lost. I love and hate remembering how hopeful I was about the future. Nostalgia is a bitch.

This track and this album should be grammy nominated, and some of the tracks should be on Oscar worthy movie soundtracks. How are they going to perform Damage gets done Live? It's so layered in sections, but if anyone can do it Hozier and Ms Carlile can.Even if they dont duet live this song will work well for each of them in their individual setlists. Looking fwrd 2 that too.

The imagery of cars, desert and spilled gasoline makes me feel like this song is also about how the younger generation gets blamed for killing the earth when our only crime was being born at the end of a unsubstainable cycle. Using a car for a long trip instead of a train, or eating avocados or using plastic straws "it's not how the damage gets done", but they want us to think it is. Because we do not have power in this world, but it is our turn to be blamed.

The feeling doesn't have to end if you choose to keep it. It just requires a lot more mental work to keep it when you're older. Advice from someone who has lost and regained it many times: stay off of social media, spend as much time outside in nature as possible, stay off of psychotropic meds, force yourself romanticize everything in your life, and (this is the hardest part) absolutely do not allow yourself to compare your life to that of others.

geeking out because the entire album is based on dante's inferno. your wit and lyricism is unmatched, sir this track is derived from the 4th Circle of Hell: Greed. because when you're young and in love, who cares about the rest of the world, right? you see no one but each other. vet hozier contends this mindset is actually detrimental in the long run, for society as a whole such selfishness thus merits the lovers a special place in hell. "it's the comforts that make us feel numb. i know being reckless and young is not how the damage gets done"

Just heard on my Pandora feed. "Very nice, who is this?" I thought. Oh, two of my favorite artists, and nothing like I've heard before from either of them. Well done!
