Hoya tendrils/runners public service announcement

I did something controversial in my last hoya propagation video by cutting off some hoya tendrils without clarifying why, and the consequences of those cuts, so here's a bonus/supplementary video to that explaining why you shouldn't cut off tendrils unless its absolutely necessary.

    I think its really not an issue to do this in Southeast Asian countries where hoyas are originally from. Like here in the Philippines, the conditions are perfect for them to just keep on growing so pruning them can be helpful. Awesome vids Sean, keep 'em coming. I hope to be able to visit Jakarta again soon especially now that more I'm into plants now due to the pandemic, and I see a lot of rare, exotic plants in the trade here came from Indonesia, so it would be interesting to see them at their origin.

    My hoya likes to really feel around. Every few hours I see the tendril in a completely new place. Somehow it managed to reach up with one of it's two runners over a foot straight up and when it touched the pothos pot it decided that was what it wanted to violate. It's in a 4 inch pot with two runners both over a foot, one nearly two feet. hopefully it decides to bloom

  • @onlyplants

    I know they like to wrap around but, even tho it just touched the side of the pot it stopped waving all over and has been steadily climbing up, soon it will latch onto the pothos and becomes one.@@onlyplants

    Could be due to root loss from over or under watering. When its lost its roots it cannot supply water and nutrients to the tendrils. Usually overwatering is the culprit as hoyas really hate water

    Where do you cut all the runners? I don't want to just snip them just anywhere, I want to know exactly where so the plant will thicken up. I'll keep a few runners but I don't want a plant with all these long runners hanging there. To me, it's not an attractive plant with all these single long runners hanging down. Do you cut them close to the pot? If you have this 20-inch runner hanging there, do you cut it in half at 10 inches? I want a thick plant at the top of the pot some random different length running hanging down. I want you to take hold of one of the runners and explain what you're doing. We'll cut this one closer to the pot because.....and then explain why you did it that way. Grab another one and maybe say that we'll cut it here, where it's just hanging even with the bottom of the pot because.........and then explain why and what is going to happen where you cut it.

  • @onlyplants

    Cut it right above an established leaf. The node where the last leaf is should produce vines, and anything below that too. You can also propagate for a bushy look. Prune hard leaving only 3-4 sets of leaves from the base of the pot and do single node cuttings

    Hi Sean, I have a hoya kerrii with one long tendril and yes, I knocked baby leaves off of it, thinking ‘Oops, now I will have a long tendril with just one leaf. BUT.... to my surprise, on the exact two places I knocked leaves off two new sets of leaves are growing with new tendrils forming in between. It’s sitting under a grow light since last month, I’m in Amsterdam and thought it would go in hibernation since temperatures dropped. (a picture is on my insta capricorn_tropic)

  • @onlyplants

    @onlyplants

    Hello, yes a new vine can form from any nodes! Including one that you knocked off the baby leaf from. However if you cut this node off, that same vine would have grown from a lower node instead, which... is a look I prefer. But it does set the plant back a bit in age when I cut it! So I dont recommend it for all cases...
