I’m 45 and was diagnosed with ocd at age 13. I have it under control now. My felling is that although he was upset after he found out about the hand shaking, he should now turn focus on the fact that nothing happened to him as a result of it. It’s only ocd I tell myself and it’s going to be ok. It’s the brain sending false messages and when we act on them it intensifies.

@@SilentAttackTV Congratz ;) No CBT has helped me for my part, sadly, but reading a lot of psychology stuff, about the anxiety and how the brain works and some hypnosis helped me overcome a lot of it, I guess. Since we actually are able to change ourselves and nothing needs to hold us back. So guess everyone needs to find their own way. But I guess CBT would have maybe helped if my therapists had explained it like that to me and not just used simple stuff that did nothing for me. So again, glad you got it under control and wish you the best with the rest of the road ;) We can do it.

I can understand him being upset because he was not expecting his phobia to basically be used as comedy and I don't doubt that it stressed him out to watch it play back. But at the same time, it helped him and it proved that he doesn't have to live with his condition. He should pursue it and learn more about it.

@@rae8542 If you look up a documentary by British comedian Jon Richardson called "A Little Bit OCD", he visits a dedicated OCD clinic in South London. This place is reserved for people with extreme OCD. Treatment combines anti-anxiety medication and exposure therapy where patiens are gradually ecouraged to face their fears. Around 80% of the people who leave the clinic say that it has helped them. I just feel like saying "you cannot cure ocd" is a bit pessimistic. Yes, people who have it suffer their whole lives, but you can do things to manage it. Personally, I suffer from social anxiety, and have done exposure therapy (CBT) to make my condition better, and it has helped. The main thing is that your thoughts rule your emotions, so if you can change your thinking to something more rational, it will make your anxiety decrease. Experiencing small victories by gradually facing your fears will make you actually believe your rational thoughts.

Howie's therapist actually told Howie that this was proof of feasible help. While Howie understood this, he simply chooses not to utilize that specific tool, which is obviously his right. While I understand many people's emotions towards Chris, I must say I Have Tesco Value Jams is correct in saying if your psychological issue keeps you from living life, Hypnotherapy is a quality thing to consider. I've successfully hypnotized those with ADD, ADHD, GAD & PTSD, all of which provided positive feedback post session. Of course, I understand there are exceptions to different people/situations. Just interesting to see Hypnosis's psychological benefits have only recently become more wide-spread in the last few decades!

I can understand being upset about unwillingly being tricked into doing something that you dont want to do. But on the other hand having watched your footage over and seeing that it is possible to get over a disorder just by altering the way you think about it, I would see that as a direction to go to attempt to get over a disorder. Say you have bad arachnophobia and you get hypnotized and watch a video of it and you’re holding all kinds of spiders without any sort of discomfort, I would see that as a bit of progress and motivation to get over it. And that is just a minor phobia, howies phobia is very hindering and I feel like it’s something to try to get past

As a guy with OCD, I would be incredibly angry. It may seem like nothing to a normal person, but to people with OCD/germaphobia - it is incredibly stressful. One time my therapist asked my to use a public bathroom, and you get this guy feeling that the person Hayes you and wants you to suffer. Although I enjoyed the act, if I were a judge I would vote NO because it is incredibly disrespectful. It's like asking a Jewish person to not be kosher.

  • @1970brenz

Nick Dierna I think it's not quite the right comparison the Jews and kosher. Because that is something against the order of the religion. His OCD is not a moral dilemma and can be fixed with certain help, and I imagine that Howie would eventually want to be healed, even if for now he can't. Not quite the same as going against his will in a nasty way for something he would NEVER want to do.

+1970brenz again, as someone with OCD it truly can be that severe. OCD has some intersection quirks to it. I have germaphobia and if I'm forced to eat with silverware from a restaurant, I will pass out in fear (it has happened before). I was more focused on deceiving someone into doing something that they aren't comfortable doing. If you have time, do some research into OCD. It's pretty interesting

@@michaelthompson2970 but ocd is not a habit or a choice. Mental illness, is not something you choose for yourself- it's not a lifestyle. No one chooses not to be touched, or to be painfully obsessed with bacteria. It's a neurological disruption in the brain that ANYONE can have. It's a type of suffering, and he knows it's a disorder because it causes him trauma and hardship. Of course it's unhealthy, that's why it's called a "mental illness." Just because a hyptotist could force you to walk on a broken leg doesn't mean you're healed. In fact, when you wake up, you might have damaged your leg even more. A hypnotist could make a veteran with PTSD shoot a gun again. Do you think that would be respectful to the years of trauma he/she experienced while serving in battle? Whatever progress Howie made in therapy may have been set back years bc his condition wasn't respected. Just like we respected ppl's gender identity and their sexuality, it's so important that we also respect a disability that someone suffers from. We may not be able to understand, but if they tell us what their boundaries are, we believe them, and abide by them...period. It's not a f-ing game.

Makes sense now. 30 minutes is different from what they have shown on TV which didn't make sense at all. The way it was done was still so unprofessional, it was done in a way to make capital out of it not to help the actual guy. For Mandel it was likely the opposite of help as he lost trust which is essential for such therapies. Given how susceptible Mandel was to hypnosis he's probably a prime candidate to be cured from his phobia by it, given he'd find someone who doesn't do it for a laugh but for his benefit.

It would seem that if you really want it to work, yes. But if you “block” the hypnotism, there’s no way for you to enter that state. It would probably take a little bit for you to get to trust the therapist if I had to guess, but really, I have no clue.

I doubt you have OCD because if you did, you would definitely know that hypnosis won't work and that there's no such thing as "getting rid of it permanently"... Hypnosis is a transient state of being out of touch with your external environment. So you will have to be hypnotized every 5 minutes 24/7 for the rest of your life to stay in that state. That's impossible! When do you get to function & live. You are simply a perfectionist and don't have OCD. OCD is a mental disorder that needs medication & long term therapy...And it is not curable!

I have OCD. I'm a clean freak. To me, people are dirty. Think of all the places peoples hands go and then society expects you to shake hands with them. Your friend just came out of the bathroom and his/her finger slipped through and they're the type of person who thinks their germs are beautiful so they never wash their hands...think about that next time he/she extends their hand out or invites you over for dinner.

AGT is a reality show until the live shows. Essentially, it follows the American Idol model where it doesn’t have to be real and can be scripted. A reality show is loophole in the fact the show can be 100% scripted. One of the only legit shows similar to this is America Ninja Warrior. All the others are probably 100% scripted if they are designated as a “reality” tv show.

Anyone know what became of the hypnotist? I know he crashed and burned on his next appearance on AGT and was still wandering around on the college circuit. I know I could do some online searching but I am curious just the same if anyone here knows. What the guy did was spectacularly inappropriate and immoral and I hope set back hypnotism as entertainment and probably so-called "clinical" hypnosis too.

Actually it started when he was a kid. I remember hearing a story about how a fly crawled into his hair. And while he seemed normal throughout his childhood and early career, there were often short signs of it. Such as not being able to tie his shoes. He knows the mechanics of it, but he knows his shoes were on the ground and that meant ground germs and bugs to him. Stuff he had to repress which eventually exploded one day later in life.

When I first saw this episode, I was about 14 or 15 and I thought how disrespectful and mean it was of the act to do that to him. I didn't have OCD when I was younger and didn't understand it too much, it's something I got in my 20s and I can't imagine going through something like this. Mine isn't bad with germs, however, I have severe anxiety about many things with my OCD. I cannot imagine somebody exposing me to my triggers when I'm not in control of myself and I can't imagine the horror of living through that afterward. The anxiety and severe depression it'll bring 24/7. He probably barely got any sleep and didn't take care of himself due to the horror he lived every day.

The thing is, hypnosis can be used to cure many things, but it has to be done by a professional, usually in a therapeutic session. Even then, it can take several sessions to fix, and it was unprofessional of the hypnotist not to ask if he could do that with Howie. I'd be upset too, and it's good to see that Howie doesn't seem bitter about it, just somewhat upset.

"Curing" a mater like the one Howie has with hypnosis is like constantly drinking alcohol to relax more. Sure it might help for a while, but the effect dose wear off. And the more you drink, the less effective it becomes. This is more like waking up after a night out drinking and realizing you drank someones vomit because you though it was beer. If anything, this might have just made it worse for the long run. Note the "if anything" part before you rage. (The you reading this now, hello!)

He has OCD. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder which causes germ phobia. It's a neurological condition. His brain tells him that it's unsafe to touch things because of germs. Especially people's hands. Although, logically we understand that germs are everywhere and there's no getting away from them illogically Howie Mandel's brain will not let him free from this phobia. But through therapy he has gotten much better and is less inhibited by his OCD.
