*Jody Watley tells another version. Allegedly😏 (per Jody's video testimony):* During the height of Shalamar's success, Howard was caught-up in his light-skinned.....pretty boy....."I'm gonna be bigger than the group, when I go solo" phase. Dick Griffey (the head of SOLAR) conspired and stirred the situation, giving more money to Howard. Jody's friend (and Shalamar back-up singer) JERMAINE STEWART (rest in power) used to call Jody and tell her they're performing without her. Dick Griffey and Howard were already trying to start-up Howard's solo career. Also, they put Jody on a guilt trip for having her baby from Leon Sylvers (obviously, abortion was implied). To add more insult to injury: Jody's former long-time lover (Jeffrey Daniels) married Stephanie Mills, for a come-up (remember, Stephanie was HUGE, during this era). Jeffrey was being petty and constantly flaunting his newfound "I'm married to Stephanie status" in Jody's face. The coup de gras was the video shoot, for "Dead Giveaway (1983)". Howard instructed Jody's limo driver to leave.....for he and HIS entourage. Jermaine Stewart had to break-up an impending PHYSICAL fight between Howard and Jody ( chiiiile, can y'all imagine this visual!!? ). Per Jody: she also denies the diva perception of the 1997 "For The Lover In You" video shoot. There was some misunderstanding with scheduling, but the producers spun it like she's being a diva. The IRONY: Howard always wanted big, cross-over pop stardom. "Dancing in the Sheets" was close.....but no cigar. MEANWHILE, Jody Watley (whom everyone at SOLAR and her former group members predicted she'd fail ) WON HER OWN GRAMMY....SEVERAL, MULTI-PLATINUM, BILLBOARD POP HITS.....and she's legendary WORLDWIDE. Her close friend, Jermaine Stewart was a BACKGROUND SINGER, for Shalamar. Yet, even HE blew-up, with his HUGE, world-wide pop classic, "We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off (1987)". We don't know where life will take us....or who will become what. So, let's keep our egos in check, folks.✌🏾✌🏾

I listen to that video and Jody said that Howard threatened to lay hands on Her, and Jeffrey her so-called boyfriend, didn't defend her, Jermaine Stewart was the one who was going to check Howard for that, But, Jody decided to leave the group then and there, the record label tried to intervene after the fact, But Ms. Watley had had enough. Plus, Andre Cymone had wanted to work with Jody before, but, her contract with SOLAR Record's would make that a Breach of Contract with them. The Rest as they say is HISTORY BABY!!! When She received that R&B New Artist of the Year award from Little Richard, them tears were of Joy and Redemption, plus Validated what was referenced here by Howard, that He told her that She wasn't S*"t and wouldn't make it on Her own!!! And, He tried to say that He and Jody was once involved? Nigga please!!! Howard definitely has selective memory syndrome and full of himself!!!

I get the sense that he's not taking full responsibility for how he behaved back then. I refuse to believe he doesn't know why Jody Watley wont fuck with him after all these years, especially since their Unsung episode kinda went into detail. Howard was an amazing young singer and certainly the strongest out of the group so, its not hard to imagine that his ego might have gotten out of control. I dont believe one argument burned that bridge, it must have been a culmination of things. He said himself in this interview that they were meeting to talk about his behavior and things escalated. That tells me he had a history of showing his ass. I know it was a long time ago and you were very young but OWN YOUR SHIT!

Howard Hewett is definitely one of my favorite male singers of all time, but he never had a #1 hit. Jody received Billboard's Lifetime Achievement award, 1 grammy win, and 3 more nominations, on top of a host of other awards and special recognition. I agree, her success was the best revenge, but I can also understand not wanting to back to the people who told you it would never happen.

Howard suffers from selective memory. Jody had beef with the record company cause they were shady. It was a hot mess ‘til she was like, “Peace out.”

There's a little more to it then just that. Howard alludes to it, but doesn't go in depth into it, and that's that besides Jody feeling disrespected, Jeffrey Daniels also was Physically Abusive to her, and he put hands on her throughout their relationship. A lot of her PTSD (for lack of a better term) so to speak about the Shalamar days has to do with that. Also Dick Griffey (SOLAR President) constantly telling her he was going to replace her. While I wouldn't doubt in the heat of the Argument, Howard said what she claims he said, I feel he's more Collateral Damage about all the other stuff she suffered through that time.

Bottom line they are older now, life is short they can have a sit down squashed the beef, do a 20 day tour and make a killing. He let her know how he really feels about her but it's ironic when there's talk of a Shalimar reunion they're ringing her phone.Shalimar was a stepping stone for each of you but Jody's solo projects blazed a trail that so many female artists tried to emulate. Jody Watley IS A FORCE unlike no other! She is one of the baddest female artists of a all time! There's nobody in her lane. You can't fuck with Jody Watley period! You need to really look at yourself. Good for you Jody! Self love. I have had hateful abusive men say the same $hit to me. Ladies, ask questions and pay attention when guys tell you that other women dont speak to them. RUN!!!! Leave them alone. If you don't, your turn is next!~They don't change.... they just find a new way to manipulate and abuse you. Or they are just looking for the next source of supply. I never comment on KZread.... but this shit pissed me off.

This was truly a sad interview on many fronts, because for one, if Howard Hewitt knew what drove Jody Watley the other way, he should have been man enough to apologize for his actions, be accountable. And the reason I say this, is because we've all had experiences in our youth, that lasted us for the rest of our lives. It may not have detoured our path in life, but it's stuck in our memory bank forever and we never truly get over it. Howard could have offered closure by openly apologizing to her for the things he said. Because let's face it, words hurt, and they cut us deep to the core of our souls. And as much as I loved their music, I lost so much respect for Howard after this interview, I mean, I have zero respect for him after this interview. Listen, as a man, we all know women can be very fragile, and as a man, we have to be very careful how we handle our women, Howard arrogantly didn't care. I'm just truly disappointed in him, truly I am.

In spite of what I "heard" Howard say, he never asked for her "FORGIVENESS" for saying those hurtful things to Jody. She has feelings too, and he should have been the "bigger person" and did that. I never heard him say, or anyone else say, that she has said anything derogatory about him publicly or privately. I don't care if the argument happened 100 years ago, when you say mean and hurtful things to someone and when you really "finally" realize that what you said hurt them, then "quickly" ask for their forgiveness. It may not have been a "big" thing to him, but as a young person then and as a much more mature person now, it was obviously a VERY BIG thing to her. Personally, I think that she has forgiven him and moved on, but the hurt is still there and you can't just expect Jody to want to be around Howard knowing that he was not even willing to speak with her one-on-one about this situation after all of these years. Yeah, yeah, "Forgive and Forget" is an easy thing to say, but it doesn't mean that she is willing to spend time around someone (Howard, in this case) that may still even now say something else hurtful to her. Especially, if they never came back and asked for forgiveness for what they had previously said about her. Howard (in my humble opinion) should offer the "Olive Branch," not Jody, that is of course, if he "REALLY" wants to settle things with her.

Here's my take on that. I'm speaking from my own experiences with long-festering feuds I've had which lasted decades. When you ask those involved in said feud what caused it, you will get one that can itemize everything the other did to taint that relationship. The other guy will say, "O, I have NO idea what happened." It's a total mystery to them. Be very careful of that second one feigning ignorance. They know EXACTLY what went down but telling the truth would put them in a bad light, so they take the cowardly route out - pretending they're totally oblivious to the cause. Jody always said Howard was a nasty piece of work. He had an attitude like he was the voice of Shalamar and the other two were easily replaceable. He was the star; they - the minions. When Jermaine Stewart was with Jody, Howard would habitually hurl derogatory names at him like 'f*ggot.' That's who he was. He's fully aware of the part he played in the breakdown of their relationship.

I appreciate Howard's telling of 'A' story but when it comes to Jody, who I have seen in different interviews while going down the rabbit hole today, she seems very well adjusted. Happy. Content. She does not seem like a small-minded petty woman. That tells me there is more to it. The fact that she has never even said "Now what N" says a lot. The lure of making a few extra bucks means nothing to her. What she feels is deeper than that. When someone does not want to revisit a part of their life it's because it was toxic and or traumatizing. Howard and Vlad can blow it off as a 'That dumb' but IMO it is not. Not everything can be forgiven. Quite honestly his arrogance should be the end of the conversation. Shalamar was who they were. We can listen to their songs anytime. Do your thing Jody!!
