HOWARD HEWETT & JEFFREY DANIEL - SHALAMAR GOLD - video interview

Музыка

Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the classic Shalamar album 'Friends', original band-members and long-time friends, Jeffrey Daniel and Howard Hewett took a break from another successful UK tour to speak to Andy Rawll, for Record Collector Magazine, about the band's career, influences and their individual achievements. In particular, the release of a new retrospective and comprehensive CD release.
Shalamar Gold is a new three-CD compilation including all 24 of their US and UK top 40 chart singles, in their full-length versions plus 12” disco mixes and other favourites from through their full career on this 42-track set. A limited edition Gold Vinyl 180g single LP (selected tracks) will also be available. These are scheduled for release on 19th July 2019 on Crimson Productions (via Demon Music Group).

• SHALAMAR - NEW SINGLE ...
HISTORY
Shalamar is an American R&B and soul music vocal group, active since the mid-1970s and throughout the 1980s. It was originally a disco-driven vehicle created by Soul Train booking agent Dick Griffey and show creator and producer Don Cornelius. They went on to be an influential dance trio, masterminded by Cornelius.
Their first hit was "Uptown Festival" (1977), released on Soul Train Records. Its success inspired Griffey and Don Cornelius to replace session singers with popular Soul Train dancers Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniel, to join original Shalamar lead singer Gary Mumford.
Gerald Brown took over the spot vacated by Mumford for the group's second album, Disco Gardens (1978), which featured the hit "Take That to the Bank". Howard Hewett replaced Brown in 1979 and supported by producer Leon Sylvers III and a contract with SOLAR they scored a US million seller with "The Second Time Around" (1979), featuring the classic line up of Hewett, Watley and Daniel
Hewett departed in 1985 to begin his solo career, and was replaced by Sydney Justin for the subsequent album 'Circumstantial Evidence' (1987). Following declining commercial fortunes, the band broke-up shortly after the release of the final album, 'Wake Up' in 1990.
Daniel and Watley equally pursued solo projects in the decade that followed, until the group opted to reconvene after the turn of the Millennium. However, by this time, Jody prefered to continue her solo career, so Howard and Jeffrey recruited long-time friend and SOLAR scion Carolyn Griffey in 2003. Ironically, Carolyn's mother, Carrie Lucas was also a Soul Train solo artist, on whose 1979 album 'Night Train', Wately had provided backing vocals)

I was on my Jody Watley binge today starting out with new uploads on her KZread channel along with Jhene Aiko two of my favorite ladies in music. KZread recommended this video for me and all I can say is I don't know why, not even too familiar with these men just looking at the screenshot but I watched it since I know Jody used to be in Shalamar. I came to know her as a solo artist with her first single and video "Looking for a New Love" me and my friends wanted to be like Jody, dress like her, do our hair like her, we cried when she cried when she won her Best New Artist Grammy, what a sweet soul. Over the years she's become even more of a role model of independence, letting us know it's ok to be different and to change with the times, with her positive Wattage messages and always changing mix of music, Jody is a true artist and very under rated. Listening to these two and also the interviewer made me more than annoyed, because Jody Watley is a music legend in her own right, loved by her fans, they try to make her appear not so important. Jody really set the tone for the Rihanna's, Beyonce powerhouses of today but they say she is missing out? Jody has made more of a mark than either of these guys, I Goggled them. Having seen her recently at her own sold out show, she exudes happiness, not sadness and as a constant fan she always surprises us. Her SRL band is so fine, compliment her well, not to mention they have had two bangers called "The Mood" and "The Passion". These two scream misogyny and jealousy of Jody, just my opinion.

Good to see Howard and Jeffrey doing what they love. It would be nice if things had worked out better in the past, because listening to what Jody mentions in her youtube segments (5 or more parts to it), most smart women would not have gone back to that either. The public doesn't know what goes on behind the scenes unless one of the public figures they follow speaks out. Well Jody spoke out and WOW! I don't blame her one bit. They are all 3 doing well for themselves now in this era of unoriginal music. Continued success to all 3.

Also it seems Griffey has a say in who joins the group and is the main protagonist here. As was her late step father Dick Griffey. He was never happy Jody left and decided to ensure she couldn't return to the group. Look at the proof Jody has provided about working with the boys. It's all there. Howard (as much as I admire him and his work) does have a penchant to demand MORE than the other two, which also causes rifts. So let's be honest here guys..... Well, let’s tell the truth here, shall we? They both have seen Jody since they initially broke up in 1983. Anyone remembers the 1996-1997 reunion along with LL Cool J and Babyface doing their 1980 hit song “This Is For The Lover In You”? Jody also said that they were going to do a song together for her next solo album, but her producer didn’t like Howard’s vocals as his vocal ability really went down over the years. She also saw Howard in 2013,2016,and 2019. Also,Howard & Jeffrey stupidly signed a contract with Dick Griffey before he died saying that they can only perform as Shalamar with his daughter Carolyn, and no one else. (The Griffeys own the “Shalamar” name.) So this “reaching out to Jody” crap needs to stop. They are still control by Dick Griffey beyond the grave.

Ironic that Howard brought up the Eagles Reunion. But what Howard failed to realize is that Don Henley and Glenn Frey were getting paid more than Don Felder and the rest of the band. As a result, Don Felder left the group in 2004. He was also writing a tell-all book about his time with them which also was apart of his firing. --------------------- And for the Jody comment, what is she missing out on? She said in numerous interviews that she doesn’t have a problem with them, it’s just that she moved on, and doesn’t want to relived that part of her past. Plus, she has had a great Grammy-winning solo career since leaving Shalamar. She was the voice of Shalamar. Howard lost his voice over the years, and Jeffrey never really could sing. She also has a lot of repertoire she can used in her shows like the Shalamar music, her solo music, and the music with her group Soul Revolution Love. All Howard and Jeffrey got is the Shalamar music. I guess Howard can sing his FEW solo hits, and Jeffrey can dance. So,Jody’s not missing out on anything. Plus, since they’re not being honest, they signed a contract with Dick Griffey before he died that says only his daughter can perform with them, and no one else. These guys are full of it.

I've been to a few Jody Watley concerts, in fact just seen her earlier this year performing at the Micrsoft theater and she did revisted her legacy (past) singing a Shalamar song but her Musicbook of 'Jody Watley' far surpasses that of Shalamar and she does include a few songs into her show, but unlike these two they only have the past hits to base their show on. I find it a little pathetic they've allowed themselves to become a revival act over these years like such groups as the Platters.

She was the first recording star and woman of color to ever have a million dollar sales fitness video, this two didnt Massive records and albums platinum sales, these two hadn't Worldwide concerts in many countries in the US, Uk, Europe and Asia market, these two haven't The first woman of color to grace the cover of a major Japanese fashion magazine cover, these two haven't Starred on Broadway, these two haven't Invited to sing at the United States by two presidents and a Senator who was once our country's first lady and these two haven't. Have a NEW group with two top Uk hits under their belts, and Jeffrey and Howard's last release with Carolyn Griffey whet where on the charts???? These are just a few of Jody's accolades I've mentioned since Jeff said "Jody's missing out" because her resume reads long and these men accomplishments are like a short and very brief like a TV ad. There's nothing Jody is missing out on especially when it comes to playing second fiddle to a lead singer that no longer can sing. With all their success, Jody Watley has attained there's nothing she's missed out on when she seemed to have accomplished all her goals while these two men are attempting to recapture time in a bottle, a moment of the 80s failing to realize that time span for that moment lasted as long as the lifespan of a firefly. As long as these guys continue to disrespect Jody with their shady comments there will never be a snowball chance in hell for a reunion. I think it's time for Howard and Jeffrey to end their jealousy and difference they have with Jody and apologize to her for their misbehaving, and maybe we can see them three for one last time!

Tony Howard shame on you. Howard Hewitt went Platinum after leaving Shalamar and that album spawned four hit singles "I'm for Real", "Stay", "I Commit to Love" and "Say Amen". Wow, there must be zero soul and RnB people in the comment section. Jody sounds very accomplished, no doubt. I recall she was heavy into image and fashion. Her dance style was unique. Howard Hewitt's voice accounts for three Grammy nominations and one Grammy. He has been hired by numerous Jazz greats to sing on tracks. The brother does his thing on the "Secret Garden" remake. No all-star line up like the original. Just Howard doin his thing. That is Howard's genre R&B, a Soul Singer. Look for that format and there he is. Howard has multiple platinum and gold records. This man has a lot of hits and he still performs. He has done Gospel too. Let's be honest, Jody watley was the female Bobby Brown. That one album that is blockbuster with five hits and the follow up is received by the public as Just okay. Janet had about 3 or four killer albums in a row. Howard Hewitt is not some washed up old dude trying to recapture Shalamar. It's clearly something the fans would love to see and hear. Shalamar had an RnB dance radio sound from "something" like 1979-1985 they had a catchy feel good sound. Howard made public remarks about Jody's singing ability many many years ago. I think that is the real issue all these years later. Was Howard wrong? I assure you Howard has a gazillion recording credits. Why because his voice is respected and he gets the call. Jody does not have a catalog like Howard. To her credit she has one killer album. He isn't broke or begging he stays busy in music. Those who love soul music know Howard's contribution to the game. Keep in mind females keep the music industry afloat. The ladies buy the majority in music and females buy majority tickets, and as far as female fans go, he got plenty of 'em. Doesn't mean I agree with his remarks but let's give credit were credit is due. Great RnB Soul voices. Howard Hewitt, Ron Isley, Freddie Jackson, Charlie Wilson, Luther, Johnny Gill. I sincerely believe that Howard's recording resume is far superior to Ms. Watley's. And yes he can tour outside the U.S. too. Let's be honest, in the group Shalamar Jody is a second fiddle and history tells us that. like it or not, in the group that's her role. Jody is not this international phenom, Sade is. Sade could sell out any stadium or arena around the globe, then and now. You describe Jody but your blending her with Beyonce. Wich is a whole different level. If you laid out all of Jody's income options her biggest payday is a Shalamar reunion. That applies to all three members. You can't take a song of Howard's that you don't like and broad stroke his career as crap. Jody on the charts in the U K, that's just so funny. Latoya Jackson was a huge star in Europe in the 1980s. Smh. Did you know that Cher has had a hit in every decade since the 1960's. Do not deceive people making them think Jody has just been cranking out hits all these years. Let's give her credit though. Jody and Howard are both worth about 5 million give or take. (I'm just guessing about that 5 mill. but Im good at calling those type things). I say everybody get together and get the bag. At best, at this stage, Howard and Jody could tour separately and neither would fill a 5,000 seat venue. But Shalamar people want to see and would pay to see. My 2¢ comment. Do I get back any change. Lol

@@KingsdaleNorth His album did go platinum but he never crossed over i.e. I'm for Real stalled at 90 on the Hot 100 whereas with Jody first album she went 4x platinum and spawned 4 top 10 hits on the top 100. So in retrospect, the soul train dancer basically was the GEM of the group but Dick Griffey was too controlling to realize it. As far as Grammy there's a big difference between Best New Artist and Best Score Soundtrack for VIsual Media. My point here is Jody was the Michael Jackson of the group but production put all there eggs with Howard so I mean look how well that turned out... Ironically his only real showing on the Hot 100 was This is for the Lover In You (LL, Babyface, Jody watley, Jeffrey Daniels) #6.

@@KingsdaleNorth I just went to the RIAA certification site and he is not listed as having either a gold or platinum album. Looks like Howard lied again. Hope you didn't get that from Wikipedia. If I'm wrong, I will surely apologize. He has gold albums with Shalamar, 4 I beleive, one of which he buried with his dad. Also, Howard has to tour because he isn't making money like he used to. No one is buying his stuff. He isn't worth 4 million, thats another falsehood. His recording resume? He always followed behind his much more successful childhood friend James Ingram. How else was he gonna be able to sing background on Quincy Jones, Barbara Streisand or Michael Jackson's albums? Alll on the strength of James. Without him it never would've happened. Jody is still doing solo tours and she's been on tours with other 80's artists. She's had UK chart hits recently by herself and with the reconfigured Shalamar band. These are facts! She's not hurting for money like Howard is. She wrote extensively on all her albums and gets good residuals to this day. Constantly played on radio too. Worth way more than 5 million Howard is really worth about 1.5 mil if that. And I hate to break it to you, his voice is shot...not as good as it used to be. Jody Watley is a GRAMMY winning Solo artist / Business Woman / Entrepreneur. She has been handling her business for decades. Jody does NOT need those two lame, pathological liars. Instead of coming at Jody based on Howard and Jeffrey's lies, you NEED to tell Howard and Jeffrey to tell the truth. FACT is, Howard and Jeffrey are under CONTRACT and the only woman they can work with if they are to perform as Shalamar is the mediocre woman they tour with. If anyone is "acting a fool" it's Howard and Jeffrey, two cowards who refuse to admit the truth!

@Edward Jones Jody Watley was thenpure sound of Shalamar and solar records and her exit was the demise of Shalamar even after choosing De’Lisa Davis that vocal style of Watley’s could never be duplicated since her exit, nor with the current female singer who struggles vocally along with Howard Hewett poorly recasting the past Shalamar hit. A few people insinuated Jody’s passed side project group ‘Jody Watley featuring SRL’ never copied Shalamar. Their performance far surpassed Shalamar then and now. It was no comparison. In fact, there’s a UK performance of the current Shalamar copying Jody watley & SRL dresssing like SRL, revamping one of their songs performance with the fellows opening the song and the current female singer enters stage afterwards. Everything about SRL was original paying homage to the past but not becoming the past when they released their own singles thatbwere hits in the UK. You may say “hits in the UK, not USA” well, Shalamar was always bigger in the UK and never taken seriously here in the states.

You must be crazy she went on to win several awards and had an amazing career in the late 80s. She is beautiful had a model body and swag. No reason for her to be jealous of a man that was sexually inappropriate around her. Howard was a ragging coke head who was creepy and did not like to be told no.
