How Zippo Lighters Are Made | The Making Of

Фильм және анимация

Zippo lighters are not only used to spark a flame; they’re a little piece of nostalgic treasure. And they're one of the most popular lighters prominently featured in films like The Fifth Element and Die Hard. How they're made is as impressive as what they've come to mean. The company transforms sheets of brass into the lighters that have the signature clicking sound, and add an element that make them wind resistant. Insider’s Fabiana Buontempo gives us a look behind the scenes at how Zippo lighters are made.

Had a Zippo for 3 years until I've lost it unfortunately but bought a new one straight away and I've had that one for about 4 years now. The service is amazing, the hinge-pin fell out but sending it to the European repair center would be more expensive over driving to it so I went there, not only did they replace the pin, they also put in a new interior while the old one was perfectly functional. Send out a Zippo lighter for repair without the interior, get it back with a new interior, send out just the interior and get a new exterior. Having that kind of service and knowing that Zippo will be there for you to fix it for the rest of your life was one of the main reasons I've bought one to begin with. It is probably more expensive than a Bic-lighter but still worth every penny.

It was my grandpa's lighter...his favorite lighter he always make sure that it's clean and shiney and I still remembered that when I was still a kid I tried to sneak inside his room to play with his "Zippo" but he caught me before I can even light it up-_-...sigh ...he pinch my ears real hard that I cried like krazy..haha... But he's not here anymore he already died 7 years ago... And after 7 years, just yesterday I accidentally discovered an old rusty little box in our basement and at first I didn't give any sheet about that lil box until my grandma picked it up and said this "you were just down here all this time " and I asked her whats inside the box and she gave it to me and told me to open it myself and I was shocked when I saw my grandpa's Lighter inside it and it made me remember all those fun memories with my grandpa ...sigh ...and 4hours ago I went to the hardware store to buy all the things that I need to clean My grandpa's Zippo... and just now before I started watching this vid I was able to finish cleaning it ... Ugh ..these tears just won't stop... Anyways that's all..and sorry about my bad English -_-

Only if they intend to carry it. It's not a lighter you put in a drawer and forget about, because it WILL be out of fuel when you need it. But something you carry regularly, so you keep it fueled? Absolutely, best option.

I prefer a Zippo with a butane insert. It gives you a more concentrated flame (great for lighting birthday candles and such), and you don't have to worry about evaporated lighter fluid.

The real reason that ALL pass through wick pipe lighters absolutely run through fuel is that they are just much more efficient at burning fuel by design. You have to think about the physics and aerodynamics of fire. The flame consumes oxygen as part of the chemical reaction; this oxygen is pulled to the flame from the surrounding enviornment creating a vacuum. The reaction causes the release of an immense amount of heat, aka the flame, and this heat immediately wants to travel up. This leaves only the sides of the flame or below the flame as oxygen sources. By closing up the sides of the chimney and opening from bottom to top you are creating a chimney design that is much much more capable of pulling oxygen into the flame than a standard chimney that only allows for oxygen to enter from the sides. It creates a powerful up draft through the lighter which only provides even more oxygen to the flame greatly accelerating the burn. I am a vintage collector and find myself filling multiple lighters every single day as I often rotate them out on the daily. I love these things and refueling is just part of the experience. My favorite thing about pipe lighters is the intense dramatic flame they are capable of producing when wicked correctly. Cheers mwn
