I do wish that we got more "sub-categories" in the game. Union, FLIP, Gemini and Spirits are the main 4, with Unions being the best mechanic. Sadly most of it does kind of fall into the ABC-XYZ pile of Light Machines or with other one-offs that don't do anything. Not to mention Equip based strategies do take over a lot of the design space of Unions.

I think its weird tho how they have to always print the same text onto these cards instead of just making it work as a mechanic. That would be way cooler, if it was just an inherent summoning method type of deal. I mean we dont write "this card can be used to summon a synchro monster" on every tuner. Same goes for geminis, spirit, and illusion monsters to an extent. Like, abbreviations like in hearthstone would be nice , so you can yknow, actually fit an effect on that card instead of occupying half the text box with unnecessary repeating phrases

*Look at Magistus, Buster Blader, Infernoble, Therion, etc. Player: These decks can equip their monsters to other monsters, and gain additional effect while being an equip card, right? Konami: Yes. Player: And we have Union monsters with similar logic with them. Konami: I know that Player: So, can we call them a Union deck? Konami: Of course, not! . There are a lot of interesting Union-like decks but they're not a Union deck. I believe Konami didn't want to give them Union status because it makes them less generic. They want everything generic, and most important, more boring and lose their unique identity. . The decks I mention in top comment. I think they already have an effect like Union monsters, and they can be Union deck. Their design is proof this Union has potency. But yeah, if somehow Therion is a Union deck, and can only target a Union (specific types) monsters. The deck will be less generic, which means, the price will decrease because the cards will be more difficult to use.

It's like how Yosenjus are mechanically and even AESTHETICALLY Spirit monsters except they didn't make them Spirit monsters because they just forgot Spirit monsters exist.

@@mmmbhss3468 The Special Summon limitation on Spirit monsters is an effect, it's an effect that is on all of them but it doesn't have to be, there is literally nothing forcing a Spirit monster to have a Special Summoning restriction. INCLUDING the series of Pendulum monsters based on Japanese sports. Or Yamato-no-Kami. Or Konohanasakuya. Or just having cards that simply say "ignoring the summoning condition" like Shinobirds.

​@@Zetact_ this, You would think "Normal" Monsters would be effectless vanilla creatures, but Konami has simply made it where all Tokens are Normal Monsters so skill drain wont allow the Fiend Sanctuary token to attack. Toon is another category where you think summon sickness and paying lp to attack are mandatory things on all toon monsters but not all toons have these restrictions.

ABC did it right but they get a lot of helo indirectly from other things existing Hanger Ancient Fairy Dragon Therion King Regulas Auroradon Galaxy Soldier Etc Thats just some of it. The other part is ABC is less a union and more a fusion combo deck than anything. With some good typing that helps it out. Let them make a Dark Warrior Union type that can synchro/link/xyz from the spell zone or graveyard. Then everyone would say its the most broken thing every created

why aren't noble knights gemini (some gemini support just say to grant them the effect without "as if they are normal summoned on the field") so they don't really have to require exactly a 2nd normal summon heck, there can be a gemini who just require the 1st normal summon and it wouldn't break gemini rules

@@jpgomez02 I would argue that Union fits the description better because Flip monsters saw a ton of meta relevance in the early days of the game. Man-Eater Bug, Hane Hane, Magician of Faith, Spirit Reaper, Night Assailant, etc. Union only has Machina and ABC as examples of meta relevant examples, and even then they were relevant in spite of being unions.

@@tpsplatinum3562 flip monsters fit the description better because there is a union deck that is at least kinda decent and actually uses the mechanic(abc), while the best flip deck (shaddoll) uses like one flip effect every time 10 games
