How YouTube Changed The Essay | Evan Puschak | TEDxLafayetteCollege
Evan Puschak, creator of The Nerdwriter, traces the history of the written essay and the essay-film, showing how these two strands feed into a new form of the essay which is becoming increasingly popular on KZread: the video essay.
Evan Puschak is the creator and producer of The Nerdwriter, a popular web series of weekly video essays about art and culture. Evan launched The Nerdwriter in 2011, a year after graduating from Boston University, where he studied film production. One of his first videos landed him a job at MSNBC as a writer and web content producer. Almost three years later, the Discovery Channel asked him to write and host a show on their digital network called Seeker Daily. After launching a successful show for Discovery, he left to pursue The Nerdwriter full time. Evan has never been fond of offices or working for other people. He hates meetings and quarterly earnings reports. Now that he’s working for himself, pursuing his passion on KZread, Evan has never been happier.

Leave it to Evan Puschak to make his Ted Talk a video essay about video essays.

It's funny how it all started with Yahtzee's video reviews, which later vloggers took his structure into different, compelling structures, from ASAP Science to your vlogs, of course.

Evan should be on a real Ted Talk, not just a Tedx. His channel; Nerdwriter1, has some of the most carefully thought out videos and they get you thinking.
I watch a bunch of essay channels on KZread including some mentioned in this speech, but what sets Evan apart to me is his unmistakable passion for anything he chooses to talk about, and especially for learning, which in turn gives viewers like myself a bigger passion for learning as well. Keep up the good work, man.

There's a similar passion for learning in Tom Scott, but I'm not certain I'd call his stuff "essays".
Evan, you give me hope for humanity.

There is always that one moment in the video where he slows down, you know that last line he's going to leave you with will be awesome, and then the essay ends. Like oh boi talk about marketing. This guy markets with the phrasing in his voice.
Wow he even talked the same way he does in his vids lol I guess he actually talks like that :P Great job Evan!!

Im not even joking when Im saying this but I think it would be cool if he did a video essay in how he spoke, or just a study on how presenters speak. Kind of like what he did with in his video about Trump.

ムーン No person goes on Ted talk without learning a script by heart beforehand :) His talk about video essays was written by him like the scripts of his videos, that's why he sounds the so much the same ^^ Don't think he always sounds like that but I've really gotta respect how professionally he manages to speak infront of a crowd! probs
THIS WAS HAPPENING IN MY TOWN!? AHHHHH I've been a Nerdwriter fan for like four years, how did I manage to miss this.
U deserved a bigger audience. Great talk man!

Got to love this guy.
One of the things on my bucket-list is to meet at least one of the brilliant youtubers I follow and have a nice coffee chat.

Most underappreciated ted talk :(
There needs to be a bigger audience for this speech.
I have waited a long time for him to do a TEDx-Talk and now it's finally here!
I'm actually kinda shocked there was such a small audience. Nerdwriter, you are the business. Play on.
It looked like he had memorised the entire talk... genius.
I didn't know Nerdwritter and Every Frame a Painting were friends, thats pretty cool.
God, I'd love to have a classic 1800's three hour talk or debate with Evan, even though most of his work is 5-10 minutes long it would be amazing to see how much comes out of that conversation.
Wish he'd have had a bigger audience. He deserves one. Great film-essayist.
That was amazing! Thanks for giving your time to make our internet a better place :)
So proud!! And I loved the MGS alert sound hahah

I'd have expected a bigger crowd keeping in mind that he runs Nerdwriter!
This is so underrated!
I realize this video was 6 years ago, but I want to say, I was totally entertained by Evan's essay, "Write A Book" from Escape Into Meaning. The part about being crestfallen was hilarious. Only because I can relate to what followed his being "crestfallen!" LOL
4 years later and it’s still a great talk!
One of the greatest creators on youtube having the smallest crowd I have seen at TedX. Sad!
Fantastic talk, Evan. I love your channel, I've learned so much about art criticism and all forms of analysis from your video essays. Having watched you since the early days, I almost feel proud to see you delivering a TEDx talk! Keep it up, man. I'll always be here watching your stuff.
I love the structure of a high school or university essay as an argument, an attack on a commonly held belief or idea. But like I love your essays as a truthful explanation and an exposure to your passion and ideas.
A great Intellectual man: Evan/Nerdwriter1! Respect for him 💖💖💖
Evan, your content is truly amazing. I love the channel, and I never miss a single video. Greetings from Serbia, keep up the good work, buddy.
Evan! You deserve a more enthusiastic and bigger audience in this talk! Those people are LUCKY to be there. I wish I was there.
Love your videos, I never use to be interested in examining art but you present in away that keeps me interested and gets me thinking about what the artist is actually saying.
Thank you for bailing on the other jobs and doing nerdwriter. Your videos are a service to humanity, and are laying the foundations for this new medium of philosophical discourse.
Back when I made the decision to become a writer. I subscribed to Writer's Digest. One of my favorite articles on writing was titles, "Writing for the ear, the eye, and the imagination."
Evan is awesome! His video essays are thought provoking and his choice of topics never cease to amazing me. I'd love to have Evan as a friend - think of those incredibly interesting conversations you could have with him over a pint of beer? Fancy a pint Evan haha?
great - hats off to Evan
HI, Composition Teacher here. I didn't study Literature. I studied Rhetoric and Composition. I agree with him insofar as literature is a poor discipline to teach generalized academic writing skills. But the composition class isn't there to teach you how to write an essay. It's there to teach you how to make academic arguments in whatever field of study you choose in the future. Academic papers most certainly DO require you to write strong topic sentences and pick a position and defend it. That's how the university creates knowledge. What he's talking about is a genre of writing called creative non-fiction. Writing that uses non-fiction genre's to create a more artistic or thoughtful piece of writing. KZread adds a wonderful multi-modal aspect to the genre of the creative-nonfiction essay that can be mass produced and widely circulated. I agree that it's a wonderful thing, but it's not better or more than the traditional academic essay.
Such a great talk! I feel like there is a overlap here with the recent growth in popularity of highly produced podcasts too. I for one welcome education branching out from the classroom and into entertainment. Perhaps this is the beginning of the education reformation we've all been yelling for.
As eloquent as ever Evan, well done.
An inception of essays wtf this is beautiful Evan
You are great Evan, been a long time fan of nerdwriter. Sad to see suck a weak, uninterested crowd, but your target is online, and online you are receiving the merit you deserve.
brilliant man , a great inspiration
His last sentence is on point.
You can't be thanked enough for your videos
Very underrated presentation
Genius! Love this guy.
Excellent job, Evan.
This guy is INCREDIBLE
Great talk as always Evan.
I believe that alert sound at 3:00 is the same alert sound from Metal Gear Solid when discovered by an enemy. :)
This has been one of my goals for my channel. The demo / genre of what I do is usually banjos and camo...being a designer and lover of film - i wanted to reshape how I would present my information.
Awesome presentation! I enjoy all of your work here on KZread. Keep it up.
So good. Love this. A little extra food for thought: Karl Ove Knausgaard's "My Struggle" is an essayistic series of novels, and that is so popular right now. Essayism is trending.
wonderful talk!
Brilliant, wish I could support you in person
holy shit u did a ted talk! always thought u had the perfect voice for it!!
YES TED TALK THIS IS SO YOU AND PERFECT FOR YOUR BRAIN AND CONTENT
To date, over 140k people are in your audience! More to follow...great work!
Great talk.
Great speech. And thank you for that clip about the NFL's yellow line. I asked a couple of my football crazed buddies one time and they just shrugged like it was a dumb question. It wasn't even a curiosity in their minds lol.
Damn Evan the Man!
Nerdwriter1 is a genuine :) I think he is a great story teller!
Go you Evan!
