How Your Doberman Will Change After Neutering-Behavior Changes

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

So how is your Doberman going to act AFTER he gets neutered? In this video, I'll tell you what behavior changes I saw in my Doberman Arlo after he got neutered, what other Doberman owners are seeing in their dogs, and what some of the best research and studies say is likely to change! This video will unequivocally answer that question of how your Doberman is going to behave after neutering, in the best way we can currently. Will neutering fix behavior issues like aggression, sexual behaviors, marking, and barking? What about separation anxiety? Also, did you know there's a way to temporarily neuter your Doberman to see how they're going to react? We talk about all that in this week's video!
➡️ My video on WHEN to neuter a Doberman: • When Should You Neuter...

In your video about the best age to neuter a doberman you recommended 18-24 months. But you actually neuter yours at 13-14 months. Can you please explain why? I have a 4 month European Doberman, that is why I am so interested in the topic. Love your vids 😀

I think Arlo was already neutered by then. But my Doberman breeder also suggests 18-24 months as he should be fully grown by then.

Thanks for bringing this up, Francisco! I also really appreciate the kind words! Means so much! Here's the reasoning for you and others that are curious about this: First, just to clarify: My previous video was on WHEN to neuter your Doberman from a health standpoint (kzread.info/dash/bejne/mpxm2sGMdanSdco.html), whereas this video was strictly about behavior changes after neutering and didn't touch on anything about health. Neither video discusses outside reasons to get a dog neutered (preventing unwanted pregnancies, dog daycare regulations, dog park rules, etc). However, all three of these things, including your vet's opinions, should be considered when deciding on when and if to neuter your dog. So remember that each of these videos is only 1-piece of the puzzle! But here are my personal reasons for doing it soon after 1 year of age with Arlo: - The dog kennel where Arlo stays at on occasion (when we go on a short vacation where dogs aren't allowed and no family is available to take him, for example) will only socialize Arlo with other dogs during "playtime" if he is neutered. Otherwise, he's kept separate. Socialization is huge for Arlo and something he always needs more of. - The dog park we take Arlo to requires male dogs to be neutered (we've been sort of skirting that rule up until now but it's getting harder to do). Again, I feel socialization is so incredibly important and his trips to the dog park are vital for his socialization and development. - Our vet recommended it (like most vets do -- I've noticed they're very "neuter happy" where I live in California). - The health studies I reviewed for that previous video showed many risks drop significantly if neutered after 12 months of age, but yes they drop a bit more after 18 months it seemed. But that second drop doesn't seem to me as significant as that first 12-month one. So we definitely wanted to make it at least 12 months. - And yes, full disclosure, the wife is in charge of Arlo when I'm at work with our 3 young boys. Her hands are very full. She was certainly on me to get him neutered soon so hopefully, it would improve his focus on the guidance and direction she gives him. I wish I could be there all the time to guide Arlo appropriately, but the realities of having a full-time job make that not possible. So yes, the wife's pressure on this topic definitely had an impact too (sorry honey)! Those are my main reasons. Everyone needs to decide what's right for them and their dog, in their specific situation. Arlo's socialization is so incredibly important for him right now. I got him at the start of quarantine for COVID and that is one area he's always needed more of. I certainly felt that once we got over the worst of the health risks (at the 12-month mark), instead of squeaking out every last percentile of lower health risk, it was crucial to get him the maximum socialization as soon as possible. So those first two points in this list were pretty huge for me. Hopefully, this clears up some of the reasons why this was the right decision for us anyway! Just do right by YOUR family and your dog whatever your decision!

My Bushido was right around 24 months old when he had to be neutered do to an abscessed prostate. Had to take him to an emergency vet then transferred him to another vet. $3500 later my boy was alive and back home with his brother, an American Staffordshire Terrier (Chance). I have never seen two dogs get along so well. His demeanor remained the same was never aggressive. I walked him 3-4 times a day and tried to introduce him as many as people as possible. Sadly I lost him at around 8 do to unknown reason. I will tell you this, I know he lived and respected me enough that he crawled in bed and died at my side. Greatest dog ever and I miss him dearly.

Good video John! I got my female Doberman spayed (a laparoscopic spay) at 17 months. I haven't notice much difference, if any, in her behavior. She still has loads of energy and loves to go to the dog park and run around with other dogs. She also goes jogging with me, and I have to hold her back because she wants to run full steam ahead. I've cut back slightly on the amount of food I give her because I know her metabolism will slow down a bit without the hormones. But, all in all, I'm happy with when and how my dog was spayed. 17 months was a good age because she was fully grown and her joints were well-established. The lap spay worked well because the incision sites were very small, minimally invasive, healed quickly, and only her ovaries were removed (not her uterus). Previously, she had gone through one heat cycle, and it was a real doozie. There was blood everywhere for 3 weeks, plus vomiting, and refusing to eat. Six weeks after her heat cycle ended, she went through a "false pregnancy" (like some female dogs do), and her breasts were swollen and hanging to the ground (leaking milk). Again, there was more vomiting, and more refusing to eat. Through research, I discovered that female dogs who experience drastic false pregnancies after heat cycles (like my dog did) will likely continue having them most of their lives (after every heat cycle). I didn't want my dog to go through that kind of hell with another heat cycle, so spaying at 17 months (prior to a 2d heat cycle) was best in my opinion. I'm very happy with my decision. At this point, I have a Doberman that is healthy, energetic, and not burdened by the hormonal extremes she had experienced. I can take her to dog parks and not worry about unneutered male dogs approaching her. And, she's as protective of the house as she always was (has an intimidating bark for all strangers who approach). All in all, I couldn't be happier.

It's funny, because sometimes I get home from the dog park and Katie starts playing with some of the neighborhood dogs. My neighbors ask me, "Oh, are you getting ready to take Katie out for some exercise?" I say, "No, we're just getting back from that." The neighbors respond, "Oh wow, that's amazing! Where does she get all that energy?" Katie's weight has been steady at 85 lbs for quite some time now. That's something I watch pretty carefully. She gets fed twice a day, with a few treats during the day as well. All in all, she's a very healthy and playful dog. Thanks for asking!

Hi John, my last Male was neutered due to having an undescended testicle at 18mths,(I was his second and final owner,I used to take him to a socialising class most weeks and as the types and ages or breedswould change week to week. This class was a real world type class never indoors and while we would all take turns at doing training or obedience excersises there were multiple times off lead mixing. Tyson was docked and his tail was always at 90 deg to his back ( upwards) not saying he was a true alpha as most people have never seen one most see a high middle ranked which was what Tyson was, some times he was surrounded by unneutered males and would constantly put them in their place if he deemed their behaviour to people/dogs unacceptable, he also used to split up any scuffles etc between other dogs ( as I said before this was not an established pack as dogs changed week on week)we called him the puppy police lol🙂so I would say (as my current Male is also neutered due to him getting distressed and not eating etc when my bitches came into season)that his behaviour has not changed , still as energetic, protective etc,but I would say to leave doing it until they are at least 18mth old .great job John keep it up👍🙂🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I had my last doberman, Zeiss, neutered at around 9 months old on the advice of my vet. I never had a male Dobie before and all of my females except the first were spayed, which didn't affect their behavior at all. I also had Neuticles inserted during the neutering process, which made him look like an intact male. I think that they also made him feel like an intact male, but without any of the downsides of having an intact male. 😄 Neutering didn't slow him down any as far as I could see, since his temperament was high-energy, but it made him less dog-friendly and more oriented to people. I was very careful to not overfeed him...which could be a problem for a neutered dog...or any dog...so he stayed healthy and active for his 14 1/2 year lifespan.

But he was always a gentleman. 🤣🤣 My vet was very strict with me about his weight, which was the most important thing in keeping him healthy. If I could feel his ribs, but not see them, I knew that his weight was ideal. The Dobie mix that I have now came to me already neutered...and overweight. Can't do much about his dignity at this stage, but I put him on a diet, so I'm beginning to see more energy in him.

This is a very tough question - castrate or not, and at what age??? In my country the vets tells you to wait until after one year of age. Why castration? If you castrate your Dobermann because he/she is too much of a dog to handle, then you're doing it for the wrong reason and you should have chosen another breed. This is a working breed with oceans of energy. If you can't handle that - well, then you got the wrong breed. Also - castration makes your dog having problems with incontinence. Females have bigger issues with this, but it's also a problem with males. You may need medication for this. My Dobermann is castrated, but I did it only because he had another surgery and while he's under anastethic, well - take those nutz. If you want to castrate your dog because you want to solve behavioral issues - forget about it! Your dog isn't turning in to a saint just because his ballz was removed. Then you have failed as a leader and you should get an easier breed. Maybe a Golden retriever or something... Just my two cents... I'm a former military K9 handler. When in service we had german shepherds at the time, but after leaving the service i chose Dobermann and had them for 25+ years. There's no other breed in comparison, but they are tough cookies to handle and get right. It

I neutered my big boy at 15 months, my vet recommended 18+ months unless he reached what appeared to be full weight/size. I chose to do it earlier because I wanted to do doggy daycare, and my vet was onboard with doing it at that time after a “pre op” visit. I noticed that he has slightly less energy endurance, like after a dog park visit he’s pooped. Maybe a touch calmer. But that’s about it. He’s the same derpy bag of marshmallows I brought home all those months ago.

My first and favorite doberman and his three offspring I kept showed no changes after neutering. Camis obviously was neutered late in life, his kids about one year in age; Ember, the mom, showed changes more likely from a thyroid problem requiring medication starting shortly before her surgery. I had cats, so my dogs were never alone, never problem barkers, and thoroughly drilled in the property lines. Only Ember showed any slowing. Camis was never dominant unless he was protecting; he considered himself our primary defense. Ember was sometimes bossy and ignored. Phaedra and Gaius traded out passive/aggressive. Tidbit was the clown.

I heard that tying their tube instead of completely removing a dog’s reproductive organ is available but you have to ask your vet if they specifically perform this. This would be less invasive & better option for dogs. Dogs need their natural hormone to thrive. Especially in males, most will lose their confidence w/o it.

We only found out because we left him alone to go to dinner immediately after moving into a new home. He had a nose bleed that lasted over 24hrs! The local vet didn't even know enough about it to really help us. Luckily it stopped but now we make sure to keep a close eye on him if he ever has an injury.

I have a 3 year old intact male. He has none of the "issues" you listed. He doesn't mark any more than my spayed female, and It's either a tree or the grass. He has very little sexual behavior, mostly just sniffing and he's easily redirected. In comparison, my last male was neutered at 6 months and he was hypersexual. He's not an excessive attention seeker, but he does jump up every time I move like "LETS GO!" I don't think that would change with neutering though. He's also walked on harness or a flat collar and is not hard to handle. I don't get the generalized "if your dog is intact he'll be a raging hormonal humping machine." that's just not true.

All of the pups were at six weeks so they missed out on teaching from each other etc. six weeks this way to relieve but I didn’t know it at the time. This is something this breeder does but hasn’t had to answer for. Anyway, he bit me a few times maybe five or six times and all I did was go to pet him each time. He bit my husband one time we train him and he will sit but he’s so hyper, and if you’re getting bit that many times and still trying to train him does seem like the only thing we could do. We pick him up pretty soon. I hope the recovery part as well. Thank you for your videos.

Our Doberman was fantastic - until it had it's jewels cut off at 13-months. Shortly thereafter it became very aggressive towards everyone including me. Never abused, always loved. Yet bit mu face when i slowly leaned in to kiss it on the forehead. We had to give him up, very sad situation, but it went to another home with no kids. Was still aggressive there. Never a hint of this before he was 'fixed.' Look it up, this is actually common in dogs, it just is not the political thing to spread.

I tend to wait until age 3 but I had one pup that was the absolute terror and he got neutered at 9 months of age. They still hate each other and I have to rotate 2 packs. I run catahoulas and they tend to become dog selective after a certain age even if they're fixed. Neutering them at later ages helps prevent them from having joint issues later on in life. Literally the only 2 differences I've noticed is their urine is much less smelly and they do gain weight no matter what your vet tells you. Oh, I do not take my dogs to any dog park...they're cesspools of parasite ridden dogs who also may carry diseases and frequently aren't fixed and want to fight. If your dog is high energy, I see nothing wrong with getting an opposite sex puppy after your original dog turns 1 to 2 years old and is fully trained. The original dog will help train the 2nd dog and the puppy will pick up on the behavior much faster. They keep each other occupied but be sure to train separately.

Hey, Allen, thanks so much for the compliment! We didn't do as much research on having a vasectomy done as this was mainly about neutering, but it definitely seems like a great way to "fix" the dog without taking the physical look of his manhood away. Fewer vets offer this option, though, so you'll have to do some digging to find a reputable vet near you that does offer this alternative.

I understand the reason for spay/neuter in some circumstances where the dog is not under observation at all times and unwanted pregnancy can occur. I have participated in this belief myself. I have however examine the result of this elective surgery and now I'm not as convinced that it is the right thing in all circumstances. The incidences of hip and bone issues is affected by this procedure. Many of the behavioral issues that you address ie aggression etc is rarely cured by alteration. Most of the issues that you described would be best served by proper training and socialization. I think the most important consideration that is all too often overlooked is to consider what was the breed created for. No amount of surgery is going to change the innate characteristics of the breed type. Maybe consider that a doberman or shepard is not what you are prepared to deal with. All too often we fall in love with the appearance of a dog without a minutes thought of its purpose in being bred. A doberman will never be a golden retriever anymore than a golden retriever can become a herding dog. A doberman was bred for guarding and has the temperment to be aggressive and forceful if warranted. A lapdog is not in his design. He is more than a gorgeous black and tan furry coat.

I'm also tryna come to the best ultimatum for my best friend. If you did mention em thou, simply tag the time to them please? I might have missed them. 🙂

The only reason we neutered our previous Dobie Pepper is because he developed a growth on his rear being an in tact male. The neutering literally saved his life and gave him almost an extra year and a half to 15 wonderful years.

neutoring to save your dog is something you can't argue, but neutering because the owner concerned with their dog's barking, or marking, or stubbornness - is ridiculous.

Neutering your pet is like having your child's balls removed for being a child and making a mess at home....how can people justify this thing, think about youself if your father has taken away your ability to have sex or children because he was annoyed of your childish behaviour.....it's just total cruelty to animals .......

We are on our 4th Dobi first one was a female and 3 males all of them didn't get neutered ad we had breeding papers the first male we had , I had him in Schutzhund so none of the dogs would like each other the next male was really good got along with any dog and the one we have now is almost 10 years old and very bossy only likes other males if they are neutered next one is going to get neutered as it get harder to deal with that for me ! But all in all we just love this Breed our son has a male that is not neutered and our Daughter has a female

lesser? he will have none, no balls - no testosterone. no testosterone - no desire to live. in human males, lack of testosterone leads to depression and motivation, so i would assume the same is for other animals. don't dare to damage the health of an animal

Ive bought a dobermann from a well reputated breeder/trainer, picking him up now 5th April. Theyve had their kennel and training since 1981 with dobermanns, I asked them the difference between a nutered dobermann. They just said, ppl who neuter their dobermann cant handle them. So ill go with their knowledge over this.

I totally get it Shawn. Thank you for being a fan regardless. I certainly always appreciate different opinions here so that others can see both sides and make up their own mind! I'll "like" and "heart" your comment so it goes further up the comment list and others can see some other opinions. Are you in the U.S.? I'm just curious because I've noticed more of those strongly against neutering seem to be from outside the U.S. I think there's a big cultural thing at play too here. Like the ear cropping or tail docking for example. Those things are so foreign and strange outside the states but inside, it's the norm. Like neutering, there are some areas that have ordinances requiring dogs to get neutered (or pay much higher dog license fees) it's so common.

@@DobermanPlanet I’m in the US. But like one of the other commenters on here, I’ve researched and found that neutering of dobies causes big issues bc hormones are so important. I do think that neutering is many times for human convenience only. But I’m a huge fan of your channel John and listen and take to heart most all of your videos. In fact I going you before I got my dobie puppy. Such a great decision. I’ll continue to be your fan, but I simply won’t alter the hormones of my guy. My vet just told me that there was a study across all breeds after nurturing/spay. She said they found Doberman males will get lymphoma 100% if neutered. Female goldens will also get cancer so in my city there is a vet doing tubals for them. Boxer females should always be fixed to prevent cancer. I just got our second male Doberman and this scares me she said I’ll just have to double down on training. The focus is huge our last male died at almost 9 and he was very alert all the time. His tail never was down it was always strait up. My puppy now we can just pray I can keep him intact

The reason for my visit to this channel is the following: My husband wants a Doberman. Now, why is that a problem? This is why: - My husband spends 20 hours a day sleeping. He is a retired man with very little energy, absolutely no hobbies, no friends and nothing to do, so his favorite pastime is lying in bed the entire day. - A dog with so much energy that it will demand so much attention in an environment where the person who really wants to own it will not be taking care of the pet (most of the time). - We currently have cats in the house that have been with us for around 5 years. - Sorry but I deeply hate dogs in every possible way. I can't stand their behavior, I can't stand having them around. - We have other family members who feel the same way than I do. I would really love to make my husband happy, but I don't see a way to make this work. I know I won't be able to stand an animal destroying the house, because I think that's going to be the final scenario. What should I do? How could I let my husband know that we are not the right family for this type of pet? Thank you.

Honest question, why would one want to reduce the working ability of a working dog by removing the dogs testicles, thus reducing its energy, strength ,recovery ability, and aggression.
