How Your Brain Is Getting Hacked: Facebook, Tinder, Slot Machines

Casinos, magicians, and the makers of social media platforms all know something about you: your mind is very vulnerable to influence. Just as the magician relies on limitations in your short term memory or visual acuity to accomplish sleight of hand, online software engineers leverage the limits of your mind to make their product addictive. From the sonorous ping of mobile phones to Facebook's highly nuanced algorithm, product makers understand that frequent reward is what keeps you coming back. And just like slot machines, the easier those rewards are to access, the more frequently we'll want them.

TRISTAN HARRIS:
Tristan Harris is a design thinker, philosopher and entrepreneur.
Called the “closest thing Silicon Valley has to a conscience,” by The Atlantic magazine, Tristan Harris was a Design Ethicist at Google and is now a leader in Time Well Spent, a movement to align technology with our humanity. Time Well Spent aims to heighten consumer awareness about how technology shapes our minds, empower consumers with better ways to use technology and change business incentives and design practices to align with humanity’s best interest.
Tristan is an avid researcher of what influences human behavior, beliefs and interpersonal dynamics, drawing on insights from sleight of hand magic and hypnosis to cults and behavioral economics. Currently he is developing a framework for ethical influence, especially as it relates to the moral responsibility of technology companies.
His work has been featured on PBS NewsHour, The Atlantic Magazine, ReCode, TED, 1843 Economist Magazine, Wired, NYTimes, Der Spiegel, NY Review of Books, Rue89 and more.
Previously, Tristan was CEO of Apture, which Google acquired in 2011. Apture enabled millions of users to get instant, on-the-fly explanations across a publisher network of a billion page views per month.
Tristan holds several patents from his work at Apple, Wikia, Apture and Google. He graduated from Stanford University with a degree in Computer Science, focused on Human Computer Interaction, while dabbling in behavioral economics, social psychology, behavior change and habit formation in Professor BJ Fogg’s Stanford Persuasive Technology lab. He was rated #16 in Inc Magazine’s Top 30 Entrepreneurs Under 30 in 2009.
You can read his most popular essay: How Technology Hijacks People’s Minds - from a Magician and Google’s Design Ethicist.

TRANSCRIPT:
Tristan Harris: One thing we don't talk about is that-it's sort of hard to talk about this-our minds have these kinds of back doors.
There's kind of-if you're human and you wake up and you open your eyes there is a certain set of dimensions to your experience that can be manipulated.
When I was a kid I was a magician, and you learn all about these limits: that short-term memory is about this long and there's different reaction times, and if you ask people certain questions in certain ways you can control the answer. And this is just the structure of being human. To be human means that you are persuadable in every single moment.
I mean the thing about magic, as an example, it’s that magic works on everybody-sleight of hand, right?
It doesn't matter what language you speak, it doesn't matter how intelligent you are, it's not about what someone knows. It's about how your mind actually works.
So knowing this, it turns out that there's this whole playbook of persuasive techniques that actually I learned when I was at the Stanford Persuasive Technology Lab and that most people in Silicon Valley in the tech industry learned as ways of getting your attention.
So one example is: we are all vulnerable to social approval. We really care what other people think of us. So for example, when you upload a new profile photo of yourself on Facebook, that's a moment where our mind is very vulnerable to knowing, “what do other people think of my new profile photo?”
And so when we get new likes on our profile photo, Facebook-knowing this-could actually message me and say, “oh, you have new likes on your profile photo.” And it knows that we'll be vulnerable to that moment because we all really care about when we're tagged in a photo or when we have a new profile photo.
And the thing is that they control the dial, the technology companies control the dial for when and how long your profile photo shows up on other people's...

@Ayaan Hussain I get that, bu it is still not giving people validations like Facebook, which can become addicted, hence the slot machine analogy Since it is like that on Facebook, when you get a lot of likes you are winning but on the other hand when you are not getting the likes that is like when you are loosing when you are playing in a slot machine, which doesn´t really apply with youtube, when they are making you watch multiple videos per session. Unless you are creating your own content and posting the it is like with a slot machine. KZread can be just as addictive and time consuming for users as Facebook though, and even more.

If you are a content maker the likes and subscription numbers are everything. You will be checking that every day and getting a jolt of dopamine each time a video gets more likes or is received better than expected. You can also say that it's the same with comment likes (did other people think my opinion is valid and agree with it?) etc..

I know what you mean, but most people won't even care. Think of how many people get addicted to slot machines, for instance. Everybody knows the house always wins, everybody knows casinos are designed to make a profit and they make lots of money, everybody knows stories about people who gambled their money and their lives away. However, people still show up to play the slot machines all day and night. We need self driving cars so the zombies can't hurt anybody while scrolling their way around town and not paying attention to anything but their phones. When I walk outside, I see nobody under the age of 50 actually paying attention to what they're doing at all (and missing out on real life!). It's the ultimate bubble to live in; people can be in their own world and not see anything of the outside world all day. We live in a short attention span world, that likes to zone out and be entertained and not think too much. Good luck trying to educate them, unless you do it through Facebook.

Curiosity and Social Approval is what caused social media to prosper. Its basic human nature, as said by +Empathy that the least we can do is let them be aware of it. For instance, the comment you just typed down won't affect you at all in real life and it will only probably affect at most 50 people that you will never meet, it's the same thing as slot machines yet you type it down and post it hoping for something. Trust me that they are not missing out on anything but they are surely driving the wheels for big companies unknowingly being manipulated. The real question is that whether we should let them like you said, disconnected from the world and friends or interconnected through web that basically contributes to unknown manipulation. I would still stand for neither as +Empathy implied, let them at least be aware and I think we would be able to balance out between Facebook and real life. Also I rather kids or anyone look at their phones than do dangerous things like drugs rofl. I mean seriously humans are easily addicted to something and we must hold on to something to live, either its sports, gaming, movies, relationship or whatsoever and this is one of it. Just that not everyone is that aware about the danger of social media addiction as much as the danger of drinking addiction.

I can't even watch a movie anymore without scrolling through Twitter or playing a game simultaneously. It's like I've forced my mind to want to be multitasking all the time. With Twitter, I get ecstatically happy seeing puppy and cat videos and the next second I am steaming mad at seeing something about politics. All in the hopes I'll come across something informative. For me, the reward is knowledge. The emotional roller coaster is addicting.

Facebook makes it too real, that there is always a stage on which people you know well and see regularly or have real prospect of seeing again judging, even when you are not in their company. That bothered me a lot, so I decided I was better off without. But no, hate your heart out, dear friend, for you are too abstract.

Same here, I quit Facebook the moment I realized that news feeds only push what "my friends" want me to see, when in reality their lives were quite different. So basically people have the power to lie to you exponentially with things like instagram, fb etc... now "I" decide what I want to watch, "I" choose what video to click on... youtube gives me a feeling of placebo control over what materials enter my head XD. But yeah... overall fb just decreases your self esteem by showing u lies about your friend's "perfect lives".

  • @Thomas-pq4ys

Excellent! I gave up TV 23 years ago.... radio, 7 years ago. Now, all I have is this smartphone. It was so addicting. I now am able to see when It is drawing me in.... most of the time. I watch KZread most often, science, history, how-to stuff. I only do Social media with my first cup of coffee. When it's done, I shut it down. I do not have any social media on my phone. I use a tablet linked via the phone's hot spot for social, making it kind of slow, which gives me time to think about what I'm doing. I am getting much better at not caring if people like me or not. Caring about people who don't care about you is a waste of emotional energy, and mental time. I finally realized that certain people just don't like me, in spite of never having done anything to offend them. It is a mystery I choose to let be. I am a fairly talented musician. I've often seen people pull away after a rousung performance.... never to return. This bothered me for too long.... I am who I am, and music is a huge part of it. It is my passion. I know now that social shit happens... people are flakey, constant changelings.... gotta just roll with it, good or bad. Those who want to be around, will stick around.

Hey, I'm very interested in this topic and I have watched both videos Tristan Thomas was featured. I am curious if there are any books out there that have these techniques and examples of companies using them. I have read "The power of Habits" and it had a couple examples and some explanation to the science behind it, but I really want to dive in it.

"we need to have a conversation about this...." whenever media voices say this, it's vastly not like any normal conversation. in this particular case what silicon valley does in our absence, deciding on how to scam us, exploit us, game our minds is where the conversation should be taking place. but, where's the invite?

my therapist told me intermittent rewarding is the best way to keep somebody doing something because it's so addictive. I used to have a fly fishing problem. 300 plus days a year on the water. one more cast, one more hole, one more fish. slot machines are jealous of the fly rod.

you can't know the 'tricks' unless you think. this isnt overthinking. i think people just don't like to be confronted with the reality that the internet is turning into a toxic place thanks to social media and corporations making money off selling your private information. it can be disturbing to realize how fucked up this all is. but freedom only comes from actual thinking. overthinking would be if i spent the rest of the day obsessing on this topic and drove myself to a panic attack.

Okay now that we know the origin of the problem. After many years of people being addicted to slot machines (Social Media). How do we stop it? is there a specific technique to slowly become less attached to these applications that waste so much of out time. Or should one go cold turkey and delete everything?
