In the 1970s, at the dawn of personal computers, people like Steve Jobs and the scientists at Xerox PARC talked about computers as "bicycles for our mind". Sure, someone was going to make big money selling these hardware units, but the intention was at heart quite pure; computers would give our minds wheels to go farther than ever before. Our capabilities would be augmented by technology, and we would become smarter and more capable. That ethos has not really stuck, and today we find ourselves in a Pavlovian relationship with push notifications, incapacitated by the multi-directional pull on our attention spans.
We've made it through every new technological wave-newspapers, radio, TV, laptops, cell phones-without the social decay that was widely prophesied, but there's something different about smartphones loaded with apps living in the palm of our hand, says tech ethicist Tristan Harris. It would be a mistake not to recognize how, this time, it really is different. Companies today are not more evil than they were in the 1970s, what's changed is the environment they operate in: the attention economy, where the currency is your eyeballs on their product, for as long as possible-precious exposure that can be sold to advertisers. Unlike the neutral technology we once used, and could walk away from, today's technology uses us. Behind every app-Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat-are 1,000 software designers working every day to update and find new psychological levers to keep you hooked to this product. The most powerful development has been that of 'likes', public feedback that externalized our self-worth onto a score card (this has reached new heights with Snapchat's streaks, which research by Emily Weinstein at Harvard has shown puts extreme stress on kids and adolescents.) "These products start to look and feel more like media that's about maximizing consumption and less like bicycles for our minds," says Harris. Is it too late to do something about the attention economy? To find out more about Tristan Harris, head to tristanharris.com.

TRISTAN HARRIS:
Tristan Harris is a design thinker, philosopher and entrepreneur.
Called the “closest thing Silicon Valley has to a conscience,” by The Atlantic magazine, Tristan Harris was a Design Ethicist at Google and is now a leader in Time Well Spent, a movement to align technology with our humanity. Time Well Spent aims to heighten consumer awareness about how technology shapes our minds, empower consumers with better ways to use technology and change business incentives and design practices to align with humanity’s best interest.
Tristan is an avid researcher of what influences human behavior, beliefs and interpersonal dynamics, drawing on insights from sleight of hand magic and hypnosis to cults and behavioral economics. Currently he is developing a framework for ethical influence, especially as it relates to the moral responsibility of technology companies.
His work has been featured on PBS NewsHour, The Atlantic Magazine, ReCode, TED, 1843 Economist Magazine, Wired, NYTimes, Der Spiegel, NY Review of Books, Rue89 and more.
Previously, Tristan was CEO of Apture, which Google acquired in 2011. Apture enabled millions of users to get instant, on-the-fly explanations across a publisher network of a billion page views per month.
Tristan holds several patents from his work at Apple, Wikia, Apture and Google. He graduated from Stanford University with a degree in Computer Science, focused on Human Computer Interaction, while dabbling in behavioral economics, social psychology, behavior change and habit formation in Professor BJ Fogg’s Stanford Persuasive Technology lab. He was rated #16 in Inc Magazine’s Top 30 Entrepreneurs Under 30 in 2009.
You can read his most popular essay: How Technology Hijacks People’s Minds - from a Magician and Google’s Design Ethicist.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TRANSCRIPT:
Tristan Harris: Well, there's a really common misconception that technology is neutral and it's up to us to just choose how to use it.
And so we're sitting there and we're scrolling and we find ourselves in this kind of wormhole and then we say, “Oh man, like, I should really have more self-control." And that's partially true, but what we forget when we talk about it that way is that...

I'm 24 and I quit Facebook 2 months ago. I don't have a smartphone. (People of all ages think I've lost my mind!) Already my psychological well being has improved. It's pretty fantastic to only have to worry about real world social interactions now. I'm still the same person. Still use the internet. But now, I'm forced to use it wiser and more productively. Well, most of the time :) Life wouldn't be much fun if you couldn't still procrastinate occasionally. People always say, "all things in moderation" but so much social media is cleverly designed to pervasively hijack human brains and make moderation extremely difficult. It's like a goddamn slot machine for your brain. And children....well they don't even have fully developed brains! I can't imagine what social media overuse does to depressed, moody, teenagers.

Good for you! You can only use your time once, there are no do-overs. So you can use your time to be on Snapchat or read a book, learn a new skill, exercise, you name it. Use your time wisely and you can look back on time well spent, throw it away and you have nothing. So don't let people tell you you're crazy or anti-social, it's a sign of sanity to not fit into an insane world.

KZread has replaced TV for me. Although it can be a huge time-waster I tend to watch videos which are of great interest to me, documentaries, science videos, and similar stuff. I steer clear of crap videos although I do get sucked in occasionally for 20-30 minutes. I am currently watching a great series of videos by a guy called Isaac Arthur, all about advanced civilizations. I also love story telling videos about Thailand and experiences people have had there. To me, these are not a waste of time but a source of entertainment specific to me, rather than the generalized bullsh&t churned out by TV these days.

I supervise 20 nursing aides, most in their early-mid 20's. They literally spend 8+ hours a day staring at their devices. It's sunk time and I try to tell them that if they applied as much time to studies (nursing usually as most of them want to be nurses) as they do staring at these phones they could write their own ticket. They don't listen, instead they continue flushing their days, months, and years down the toilet. A real shame.

Jonathan Vazquez-Perez and BTW telling me cell phones can be "insidious or productive" is like telling me the distance from the earth to the sun. My response is "so what?" Unlike you I'm speaking from experience; these are people I generally care about and I've seen how toxic it is to spend 8 hours a day staring slackjawed at a "device." If you get some benefit from this kind of behavior, good for you.

Such a good video! Brought up some really great points. I don't think it'll be possible for everyone to simply disconnect fully from social media (I know I don't want to have to delete all my accounts), but the conversation can shift towards how do we, as sovereign individuals, retain our self-worth outside of the digital sphere. This is an especially important conversation I think to have with young adults, particularly young women. I hope to see more videos with Tristan Harris!

  • @MatthewBoyle

A very thoughtful analysis! Thank you for taking the time to lay it out so clearly. So this is a question I've been wrestling with for a while now: how can I use social media (ethically) to get people's attention (ethically) to share with them a product or idea that I really think might help them? And I think it ties into your very last point, which is, we need to figure out how to make money from creating value not simply commanding attention spans.

Yeah, this is a whole new ballgame, and I and many people I know are noticing how it is affecting the social sphere in our communities. No one is willing to make eye contact anymore, or make new friends or, even just have any type of personal conversation. No one cares about socializing anymore, because we’ve created a new digital life for ourselves, and it’s easier than meeting and socializing with people, so we’re just naturally going to gravitate towards what’s easier on average. But it’s just snowballing into a huge social problem where it’s getting even harder and harder to go out and socialize as EVERYONE is being affected by it. As less and less people aren’t as willing to socialize, It’s just getting harder and harder for the individual to overcome and navigate the current social terrain even if they want to, and in many cases the failed attempts at socializing become too emotionally painful for people that they just opt to do what everyone else is doing and just retreat into their little digital oasis where they will be entertained enough to not become quite depressed enough to commit suicide but still remain fundamentally lonely. I hate to say it, but I honestly think this is just going to get worse before it gets better.

Love Tristan Harris and think he's totally right. The one thing I disagree on is the idea that the phone and TV wasn't disastrous. The movement of parental attention from being solely focused on children (along with everyday work) to being taken up by screens seems to me to have led to a generation of people with Borderline Personality Disorder like traits. Many children of the 80s onwards seem desperate for validation and attention - and rightly so - they've grown up knowing the only way to get those basic human needs met is to actively market themselves by inhabiting the broadcast media. The TV primed the ground for snapchat - it was the TV that said - your parents love screens more than you - and created the market for products that helped people get inside those screens themselves.

This is a ver important point: THE DIFFERENCE with anything that came before - It makes me think of parents who tend to believe that their children are more in danger outdoor than in their room with their phone... "The less people have defined their own values the more vulnerable they are to someonelse coming in and giving them their values" ... imagine how much more vulnerable children are. The closing is so touching! What would the world look like today , if they made more money based on how much they helped us in our lives ? I cut social media out of my life, it's just sad to see that as humans, "sovereign human being", we are no longer enough in this society because it forces you to have a smartphone and have technology. Freedom from WIFI connection and from digital, freedom to be ENOUGH and to access public services just as a Human, should be a Human Right.

Good talk, thank you for putting this out there. I do think he's being too nice about it, talking about how corporations aren't evil, they're just trying to maximize their game. The same can be said about questionable hedge funds, drug dealer and politicians; just because it's just business to them, doesn't mean they're not evil, imho. The moment somebody has the strength of character to compete on this market with a product that doesn't mess with people's minds, or at least doesn't try to lower their self worth if they don't use the app enough, it could be a game changer. Snapchat sounds awful, I don't understand the point at all. If you have social media as a tool to put something out there, inform or entertain people or something like that, I get it, if you like it as an advanced kind of photo album and a place to keep in touch with people, I get it. But what's the point of posting a bunch of random stuff which doesn't even stays there? Seems like an endless stream of pointlessness to me, very depressing. And if you would have explained what it was to people 25 years ago, most sane people would have agreed with me, but somehow everybody lives in some sort of insane hive-mind now, where things are normal that are crazy to me. And of course, I'm not social media free either, or else what am I doing here? Resistance is futile...

Too much of anything is a bad thing, and that applies to technology too. I love KZread because of all the educational stuff on here but I also like to watch entertaining stuff that serves no real purpose too...sometimes. I've turned off notifications for all of my social media accounts, I only add people I actually know, and only follow a handful of celebrities and funny pages. Technology/social media isn't completely evil, you just have to make sure you have the upper hand and not let it control you. Like I said, notifications are off and I normally use the apps for around 15 mins everyday. Moderation is key.

8:22 I think this thing of getting constant feedback and approval from others about our thoughts is creeping into our real world as well (where even social media has no role to play). Like we have a teacher in our school who has this habit of crashing into our pleasant conversations with his controversial talks from all around the world. It really gets obnoxious when he does this, and after watching this video I think that this might have happened to him due to the social media (P.S. he talks about social media a lot in his controversies 'cause it is where he finds these things...)

Google's (or should I say Alphabet's) official motto is "Don't be evil", however that doesn't rule out the possibility of doing evil. For some reason I'm more inclined to trust them over Facebook or Snapchat even though all these companies are competing for our attention...makes you wonder what will happen when we'll be able to augment our bodies with electronics and constantly be interfacing with technology

I 100% agree with his analysis, yet the solution at the end seemed a bit brief; how can we make that change to monetising success on the grounds of how much help these technologies have given us. Is it a design change, or a corporate one?

He seems to overlook addiction. Defining our own self-worth etc may not matter when our reward pathways are hijacked. It's like telling a junky that his self-worth is not how the drug makes him feel -- good luck with that. But the anecdote about how kids give their Snapchat passwords to friends so they can help with streaks does support what he is saying, because having your friend maintain the activity is different than a direct chemical driven addiction. So I am not dismissing the self-worth argument, just adding the issue of addiction to it

I agree with everything he says, except he always protects these tech designers and clarifies these people don't have ill intentions. Maybe since he used to be one of those people he doesn't want to blame them, but I think he's going too easy on them. These people are knowingly decreasing the value of our lives for the sake of profit. They can still make profit by simply making their app just that damn good! Also a side note, if you care about streaks you need to grow up. Also I hate all of the snap articles that are fake, clickbait, or spreading misinformation. Some of them don't even spell celebrities' names right. Snapchat is just overall unprofessional.
