How Yeti Airlines Plane Crashed in Pokhara - Pilot Error?
On Magh 1, 2079 (January 15, 2023), a Yeti Airlines AT72 plane, Flight 691, carrying 72 passengers, took off from Kathmandu to Pokhara at 10:30 AM and crashed near a waterfall. In the aftermath, 68 passengers and 4 crew members lost their lives. Captain Kamal KC and copilot Anju Khatiwada were unable to control the plane, and the final report suggests that the crash resulted from a pilot's cognitive error.
Following the incident, an investigation team recovered the plane's black box (FDR) and voice recorder (CVR), and Canada and France cooperated in conducting the investigation. The ATR 72-500 plane used by Yeti Airlines was 15 years old, but no technical issues were found during maintenance. The pilots, Kamal KC and Anju Khatiwada, sought permission to land from Runway 30 but mistakenly set the flap, leading to a fatal error.
