Slight correction: Yeezy is Kanye’s own brand and has done collaborations with other brands such as Nike and GAP, not necessarily only with Adidas. So yes, they have a big collaboration. But no, Adidas isn’t a part of Yeezy nor the other way around. It’s a collab.

  • @andresortiz3007

It's less about the general idea of one piece foam slides. It's more about the aesthetics, Yeezy (the brand not the man) brought alot of deconstructed/simplified techniques and constructions to Adidas that they had never attempted. Their version of a slightly off kilter funky looking slide would have never released without the Yeezy slide being a forerunner.

  • @twotgfltandahalf

@@andresortiz3007 If Ye was claiming some sort of infringement, the Adidas ones are likely much too different with their non-minimalist topographical design for him to have a chance in court. And with the long presence of one-piece foam slides, Adidas do have the argument that it's stuff they've done for decades. Personally, I either find them similar enough that you also have to include the olde slides too, or not similar enough to be an actual infringement. What I mean is the similarities are so small between the Yeezy design language and the ones from Adidas that you have to start look more generally at them to start getting into similarities. And when you "zoom out" enough to view both Yeezy Slides and the Topo, the Adilettes suddenly comes into the scope too. This is subjective stuff, really, but the bare-bones organic style of Yeezy is quite far from the machined Topo style.

@@Derek4k what? Selling shoes? Crocs for one lol or you mean making money off of anothers design? Like Adidas and yes Kanye did with crocs. He owes his succes to crocs, no croc and theres no inspiration for his derivative slides or rnnrs. My issue is his hypocrisy and ego. He owes all his success to sampling other peoples art, from music to fashion. His yeezys clearly took influence from adidas' archives like their top 10 2000s, but when adidas designers do it, who all designed his shoes, he throws a tantrum. What makes him so great and unique and entitled that allows him to take influence from others, but denies others the right to take influence from him? Then people say the tubulars are 350s rip offs, but they were both designed by Nic Galway so the question is whose design language is that owed to? To take it further Kanye stated 350s were inspired by nikes roshes, but adidas takes inspiration from him for their adifom qs and its "death con 3"? So if people want to say crocs are clogs fine then the adifom qs are sneakers and foam rnnrs are slippers/loafers clearly making then all different from each other. How anyone can excuse his bs is beyond me. Its obvious then to everyone but Kanye fans apparently that if the adilettes and adifom qs look like yeezy slides and foam rnnrs then yes foam rnnrs are glorified crocs otherwise they'd have to concede that his slides and the adilettes look nothing alike. So again what was he mad at? That adidas made a foam slide when he didn't even invent the concept of foam footwear, crocs did. If it's not that then what the design similarities between his slides and the adilettes which look nothing alike, whose only similarity is that they're both made out of foam? What lead to his downfall wasn't on adidas, but his own ego and narcissism. Anyone who believes otherwise is just making excuses for him like they always do when he does something stupid enabling his man child behavior which is what lead to him praising hitler and nazis.

The yzy slides actually weren't popular right off the bat. They originally dropped in 3 colors and they all sat on yeezy supply for weeks, maybe months. I remember wearing them into the office I worked in and getting clowned. Then they caught on and I was never able to buy another pair. Also fun fact, the Adilette 22s originally dropped in the SAME 3 colors as the first 3 yzy slides. Can't be a coincidence.

Yeah I remember. No one wanted them in the first place. They were sitting. I think almost every brand including crocs, nike, air jordan jumped on the hype train as well even adidas, since they saw the success of the yeezy slide. the yzy slide including the foam runners are the only shoes that are highly sought after and so easy to wear. Although I dont think it was the inital breaking point. Kanye tickled with adidas before that, wearing nike socks and nike products. He also once claimed that he would love to wear ajs again. I think kanye freaked out because in the end he was with so many companies in partnership and wasnt independent as he was way before. He looked after ways how to get out of the contracts even with gap.

As for this particular video I had Adidas slip on sandals long before they were cool. I played soccer In high school back in the early nineties and we took so much crap for our awesome adidas sandals. My point is this, yes Yeezys are different, yes every brand makes something slightly different from other brands. Point is Adidas made these types of shoes long long ago and for someone to say they ripped them off on a concept design is, well….. ….pots and kettles. Pots and kettles.

Hey Weston, Great video on the history of the two slides and controversy. Would you consider doing a review/analysis of MKBHD's new 251 shoe? He's obviously a big youtuber and I'm curious if his claims about working closely with ATOMS(the collab builder) to design a good fitting shoe hold true. I think materials wise, it's pretty apparent it's all synthetics. That leaves the fit, finishing, and comfort as the only areas left to look into.

I think people are purposely misunderstanding the original commenter. Like many what is considered “fashionable” or what a so-called “influential” person wears does not determine everyone’s choices. That does not equate to “I buy ill-fitted clothes that don’t suit me”. Some people aren’t into labels but practicality and price. Those two things don’t always fall into the “fashionable” and sponsored by “influential” people box. It was not that hard to understand some people are triggered and projecting ideas that are not present in the comment at all.

Exactly I say the same thing about foam rnnrs and the adifom qs. There's no competition between the two because they're entirely different. Ones a sneaker and the others a slipper. The adifoms for people who don't like to wear what's basically a croc. As for the slides, he had no reason to be mad about those since he didn't even invent the concept of foam footwear. As far as designs I like the adilettes alot more just because they don't look as feminine or soft or idk. The adilettes look a little crazy too, but just not as crazy as the slides to me. Way too different to compare.

One possibility is that the adidas topo map slide design was discussed with Kanye but never implemented.
