How world sees SA: FT’s Gideon Rachman on meeting with Ramaphosa, SA’s GNU and more

Last weekend, South African president Cyril Ramaphosa broke his ‘no journalist’ norm and opened his home to the Financial Times’s chief foreign affairs commentator Gideon Rachman. The London-based columnist was surprised at how relaxed the CEO of SA Inc. was at a very tricky time for the country. Rachman shares insights gained from engaging with Ramaphosa and others during last week’s visit to SA - the country’s rapidly formed coalition government, its position on Russia (and Ukraine), and an outsider’s impression on what lies ahead with BizNews editor Alec Hogg.

It is exactly what I thought that he sent the invite to many party leaders and that he hopes some would turn him down. That way nobody can say he left them out also a good way to ease into the Government of National Unity. Ramaphosa won't admit it, but deep down for a long time he was hoping for this GNU to get a better cabinet to make things right. In a way his hands were tied within the ANC as he inherited unfavorable cabinet members from Zuma. He had to keep a balance to remain president which was and is the best for SA.

We need leaders that can lead from the front and inspire a nation. The Springbok story is a great example. Was shocked to hear that Cape Town is one of the worst ports in the world. If there was ever a time for South Africans to stand to together it is now and show the world how they can turn the country around and build it up. And my personal wish is that we can stand with Israel. Don't get pulled in with the lies of the media against Israel. A nation that bless Israel will be blessed that is a fact and Biblical.

I'd love to invest in SA but the risk is still too much. The biggest thing an investor wants to see is a society that believes in Capitalism as the best path to prosperity. How will this GNU's performance be measured. How many bridges to be build, how many proper roads to be constructed in Eastern Cape, Limpopo, how many young people to be employed and black owned businesses to be supported? Will things continue as usual, where a minister takes over a ministry for her/himself, coming in with a whole new inexperienced team and decide on how tenders are ditched out?. If that is the case, come 2029, EFF and MK including the so called progressive parties will form a new radical government.

This was an intelligent interview which highlights some interesting facts , Ramaphosa is one very smooth talker and has done a great job of selling the GNU deal , considering that is he is the biggest loser as a 41 percent party , secondly we know Ramaphosa has been incapable of implementing and delivering basic service delivery given his appalling track record in office . He will now have too walk the talk and hope his GNU will successfully deliver because his crumbling party base and support was canabilised by MK who continue eating away this support base. I hope this GNU works for the ANC and its allies since the progressive caucus does not seem a viable option because their leaders are not interested in constitutionalism but prefer populism and power.

From past experience in SA, it is not necessarily positive that Ramaphosa accepted the results 'gracefully' and on the surface, 'constructively'. I personally do not think, given the ANC's level of animosity, that logic will prevail, and that the DA will survive this next phase. The probability that the the ANC will stump and reduce the imp of the DA is very high.

The problem is if you want to do business as a country, the best market to sell to is the white west. The 85% does not matter if they dont want to buy your goods. And demographics are changing. Europe is an old age home. China will see a population crash over the next three decades. The USA looks like it will be more insular even though it has good demographics. India is a wakening power. So the point is for now, we need the west. And we have to grow intelligently while we have a potentially lucrative west market so we can be in a better position when the new superpowers come to the fore. The anti west mentality is really bad for business at this stage. As an example: Impala and Angloplats were competing with each other for the number 1 spot as platinum supplier to the world for years. Then we fucked around and that market went elsewhere. We have not recovered that position since. How intelligent was that? So we need to think here.
