How Wolves Use Complex Body Language to Communicate 🐺 Carpathian Predators | Smithsonian Channel

Ойын-сауық

Wolves have a better chance of a successful hunt if they have harmony within the pack. And the glue that binds the pack together is a complex array of body language and sounds that communicate mood, status and hierarchy.

I absolutely love wolves, and observing them, and learning from their behavior, never gets old! I have actually been working with wolves for many years, now, and I have, also, personally, been raising a solid black male, for the last 3 years; since he was just 7.5 weeks old, and had been left for dead by his pack. He has his own pack now, at just over 3 years old, and is an excellent alpha male. He goes above and beyond, to care for, and educate his young son, and you can clearly see how much pride he takes in his upbringing. His cognitive ability, in regards to problem solving and analysis, is truly fascinating to witness, and, I believe, it is that incredible sense of intelligence, that gives him such an increased advantage, as a pack leader. Not only, is he focused on himself, but he is highly involved with each and every member; ensuring the establishment, and maintenance, of a deep, personal bond, with each one. He is always inquiring about their needs, and paying much attention, to everyone's state of being. He keeps the pack functioning at the height of its potential, and ensures that all members are looked after, appreciated, and educated, in a way that produces the most beneficial results, for the pack. He certainly seems to understand that the feelings, needs, wants, thoughts, and experiences, held by each member, have a significant impact on that animal's personal, potential output, and therefore, influence the, overall, contribution that can be made, as a unit, and alter the pack's success, as a whole. I have, honestly, felt so humbled, and privileged, to have such an up-close, and personal role, in the lives of these beautiful, and majestic animals. They are impressing me in new ways, all the time, and, based only on what I have been able to observe and experience, as of now, I can claim, with profound confidence, that these animals are FAR more intelligent, than most people realize, and have highly complex communication, and cultural aspects, of their lives, that allow us to relate to them, much more thoroughly, than one would expect!

Why do television networks always have to add extra sound effects? I can tell those are stock growling & whining sound FXS. You are making it harder to hear & observe the true behavior & communication. Deceitful

Because actually getting the audio from wolves in the wild would be super hard Not very cinematic for a high budget TV program too

Because wildlife normally doesn‘t let you mount microphones on them before you start filming

This video has a focus on body language. No wolf sounds were necessary, but they do add a dramatic effect. Educating and entertaining at the same time. It would be deceitful if they made the wolves sound like house cats.

I walked a wolf around the woods in the Cotswolds, England two years ago. They are majestic animals with an aura and a mystique about them. It was an incredible experience.

After watching this, it makes sense why so many dogs will grab your clothes or hands with their mouths and be what a lot of people call “mouthy”. Also why they like to lick faces. Another thing this reminded me of is why a lot of dogs love that “game” where you grab their muzzle or jaw and they’ll growl a little and side eye you and then you let go and they freeze, then slowly move your hand back to their jaw and grab it and they get all excited 🤣 Wouldn’t do it with every dog, of course. But one of my neighbor’s dogs just LOVES that game.

Is that why grey wolves are spread worldwide with bustling populations, maintaining apex and keystone status in every ecosystem they are found in, while spotted hyenas are endangered and limited to a single continent despite the fact that they are hunted/poached less than wolves? Go ahead and explain that for us.
