Nice, concise explanation! This is also more-or-less how ground effect works; within about 1/2 the wingspan, the wake vortices get disrupted by the ground, reducing induced drag and helping make landings smoother.

I would like to mention that if the route the airplane is flying (this goes for the 737-800NG) is shorter than 1 hour and 15 minutes the extra weight of the winglets outdo the cost savings!

Thanks i never knew what winglets did, my speculation was they were like mini vertical stabilisers. Anyway, can you maybe say in more detail how winglets reduce noise pollution?

Yes of course! Basically since they reduce the drag (which opposes thrust) less thrust is needed. Thrust is created by the engines which are what burn the fuel, so if less thrust is needed the engines can be kept on a lower power setting. Lower power settings burn less fuel, therefore reduce operating costs, and pollute less, and the lower the power setting the quieter the engines are too. @@LuxPlanes Apparently the vortices explanation is a bit of an over-simplification, and much of the drag saving come from limiting the spanwise flow on both the upper and lower surfaces of the wings, for quite some proportion of the wing. This is also why winglets aren't just fences, which might create more drag than they save, but are carefully shaped aerofoils in themselves to oppose the spanwise flow that would be there if the winglets weren't. But that's close to the limit of my understanding. There are plenty of discussions online though.
