The new format for the UEFA Champions League has been confirmed. After proposing a “Swiss Model”, UEFA has taken on board feedback from member clubs and has finalised a new version of the Champions League.
But what is it? What will it mean for your club? Who is unhappy?

    I actually quite like it (don't forget that it's the AVERAGE performance of a nation's clubs that counts). For example, if Club Brugge won the Champions League then Anderlecht wouldn't have to beat the champions of Europe just to qualify. In England we often root against our domestic rivals, but in some countries people would like to see a team from their league do well... this simply reinforces that!

    As a watcher of Ligue 1, how does UEFA expect the league's competitiveness to increase if they don't give more Cl spots to Ligue 1 clubs (not talking about PSG). If these clubs revenue don't increase, they can't get better meaning the league stays the same and it is back to being irrelevant which means no revenue again. IMO Ligue 1 should at least get a 3rd CL spot, and a oil sheikh/ russian oiligarch is welcome.

    Every change UEFA and FIFA take always involves expanding to more teams. This is the exact opposite of what needs to be done. The Champions League should be reserved for CHAMPIONS. Adding teams who finish 5th is a joke. This only serves to reduce the quality of the matches and add unnecessary filler to an already packed calendar. It also takes away from the quality of UEFA Cup aka Europa League, which has been seen as irrelevant and worthless for years now. In the end, this only serves the interest of big clubs who have larger squads and will face even easier opposition. They’ve expanded the Euros to more teams and the World Cup too. Why not just do away with qualifying entirely and invite the whole world to participate, since that’s what these suits really want. More market, more money. They have killed football.

  • @kmlau1986

    @kmlau1986

    Don't mix the Euros and the World Cup into the same argument because national competitions are completely different. For national tournaments, no nation is automatically given entry (with the exception for the host of the world cup). All teams go through qualifiers with a relatively fair distribution, shown by how small nations like Iceland and Trinidad manage to squeezed in a spot in the past. Increasing the participants in these competitions only makes it even more fair. This is completely different from club competitions where favors are given to big players and profits drives most of the motives.

    @@kmlau1986 It’s not a comparison. I’m simply pointing out that every time UEFA and FIFA make “reforms” it’s always the same story: expansion, expansion, expansion. They cry about fans losing interest and about matches which don’t attract viewers, and then do the very thing that makes for boring matches and disillusioned fans. In the end, expansion is only beneficial for revenue and marketing, and in the case of FIFA it’s good for garnering more votes and favours. Just ask Sepp Blatter and Jack Warner.

UEFA panicked because of the potential Super League (which was also a terrible idea) so they went out and made their own. They mistakenly believe that because fans love it when big clubs clash on the European stage, the solution to waning fan interest is to manufacture more big club clashes. Not only is this not the solution, but it will make these matches less special. After various explainers from various sources, i've still yet to see anyone explain how they decide your opponents in the league phase. I find this important, because a Swiss model - where you only play a portion of all the clubs in the league - will always be inherently unfair. You could theoretically and up with a big club only having to face the 8 lowest ranked teams, while a small team who overachieved in their domestic league gets shafted with 8 games against the likes of Bayern, Real, Liverpool and City. Facing the big teams might be good for their ticket sales, but they'll have no chance whatsoever of causing an upset and progressing further into the tournament. Meanwhile the big club in this scenario gets an easy walk to the knock-outs.

  • @Tentetnikov69

    The best I've been able to find (somewhere, I forget) is that the fixture list will be weighted by club or league coefficients so each team has a roughly spread-out variety of opponents of varying 'strengths', so a big team will end up playing a couple of Barcas or Liverpools as well as a couple of, say, mid-tier Shakhtars, and a couple of Sheriffs - and conversely the smaller teams would face at least some teams more on their level too. That should in theory make it more like the kind of mix of fixtures you get from seedings in the current group format, but I'm not entirely convinced there won't be some interesting problems thrown up by that somehow.

    The league (Swiss) system will only favour the teams from the strongest leagues. Part of the magic of the groups stages is that you may get "wildcards" beating one of the strongest teams and managing to finish second, thus qualifying for the last 16. In a league format, those "wildcards"/underdogs will be competing against all the strongest teams in the table, making it almost impossible to make it through. Also, if it were to be a "pure" Champions League, the solution would be fairly simple: make it a competition between all the champions from all the leagues in UEFA, in the style of the European Cup, with qualifying groups and a 1 month event with the top 24 or 32 teams. I know this would be nearly impossible to do in one season, but then it would truly be the Champions League.

    The change of the 2 extra tickets is BS. The top 4 leagues have 4 teams in the Champions League, which gives enormous amounts of bonus points. So it will always be 2 of the top four leagues that get the extra tickets (The Netherlands are an anomaly this year). I would rather have had historical clubs, that way teams like Ajax, one of the Portugese top 3, Red Bull Salzburg, Shachtar Donetsk or Dinamo Kiev, or if they are really lucky Slavia Prague or the Rangers would have had a chance. this method is BS, it will always be clubs from the top 4. • @andrew7taylor

    @andrew7taylor

    I agree with you, except with the historical clause. It only helps a team by blocking the chances of all the other teams in that league. Why should teams like Ajax be helped to get into the CL, get revenue, buy players with that money and become stronger every year? It destroys competition in the Netherlands. With that money you can have Ajax throw the money away and still have so much more that they can dominate their league, even if PSV, Feyenoord, Alkmaar, etc. is perfectly run. "I rather watch the champion of the Czech Republic then the number 5 of the UK in the Champions league." Yes. More spots should go for more leagues, not to the top 4. The concentration of the CL spots to only a couple of leagues and the enormous revenue that goes with them has killed the diversity, the unpredictability and the excitement that the competition had when it way champions only for every league.

    I do like the idea of the Swiss model since I think the current group stages model often screws over some teams randomly by placing them in a group of death with no chance of getting out and favours others with an easy group, it also gives teams who would have been knocked out previously (17th - 24th) a chance to make a major upset to qualify for the RD 16. The more knockout games the better. And on that point, making the Semi Finals 1 leg and not played in any home grounds is absurd. @@kyler.murray4016 completely disagree with that because my scottish team made the EL final this season. We lost on penalties but the journey from group stage to final was a lot tougher than the ECL. Especially after we beat 2 Champions league drop out teams (Dortmund, RBL) to get there. The difference in quality between the 4 semi finalists in EL/ECL wasn't huge but 50% of both tournament's semi final teams had dropped down from the above competition. To be knocked out of the europa group stages in 3rd and win the conference to get the same reward as the winners of the competition you got knocked out of would be awful, even for Uefa mafia standards

    The play-off round to get into the knockout stage is also a big disadvantage to those teams, what is the point? If it already is a smaller team, that don't have the same squad depth as the bigger teams, they will more likely suffer from fatigue and not make it very far anyways...

    Correct me if I'm wrong but will there still be qualification such that clubs from anywhere in Europe could theoretically qualify? It would keep the dream alive, however unlikely, that small leagues like here in Ireland could see a team qualify to the Champions League someday. Even if it happens once in 50 years, it's the hope that it's possible that's exciting and I'm sure other small countries whether it be Estonia, Montenegro or Malta would feel the same.

If I were Ceferin I would've just changed the groups from 4 to 8 teams and added another round in the knockout. No more spots from the top5 leagues than now in order to improve the diversity of nations playing the UCL and raise competitiveness. Fully expect this mess to result that before 2030 it will return to 32 team, 8 groups of 4 model but hey it would be terribly unfair for the big leagues to return to "just" having 4 spots so it will end up with the top 5 leagues with 6x3 plus 5x2 spots leaving four to the previous CL and EL winners (and ALSO would be unfair to not allow the big leagues an extra spot if one of their teams already qualified by finishing the league in the top third) and maybe a playoff between the champions of leagues ranked 6th-9th to find out the last two... but you know, wouldn't it just be more competitive and BETTER for those teams if they just played in the Europa League? Also, for stability, let's define who are the "top 5 leagues", it would be very distressing for the competition if Portugal or the Netherlands started dominating the Europa League as french teams floundered and suddenly got themselves ahead of a country that has less major European cup wins than them and PSG I mean french teams were locked out of the CL.

    Spots attribution are always to be criticised, but a Swiss round Robin is the most fair way to figure out the actual strength of teams in a year, if you can't make them all face like in the domestic championship. The system in itself is not quite bad, it is used in chess and some esports and is by far the most fair in the long run. Especially if there is no restriction on the possible fixtures. It would be nice to know how the first fixtures are set though, I'd like every champion to be seeded (and to make it even more fair, seeded in the opposite of their league rank, so that the most weak leagues have an easier first game).

    The implementation of the "Swiss model" will be key. Typically the chess format decides a team's next opponents after each set of games, but TV rules modern football and UEFA tournaments so in the Champions League all group-stage fixtures will be known at the start of the season. Exactly how are the opponents chosen? By UEFA ranking points at start of season probably - not current performance.

    UCL is too top heavy. Remember when the top three leagues were limited to two teams in UCL, one team in the Cup-winners Cup and four in Liga Europa? (Well, there used be limits.) My qualification would be winning your domestic league or domestic cup, winning the previous year's UCL, Liga Europa or Conference League or being lucky being in one of the three top leagues' runner-up. Since every country should have two representatives, Liechtenstein's cup runner-up would also qualify. The minnows should be able to generate money, so my UCL first phase (Sept. to Nov.) would be league play with four-team groups. Each winner and runner-up advancing to the second phase while the third and fourth placed teams enter the Liga Europa's second phase. The second phase (Feb./Mar. to May) is the traditional home and away knockout rounds. The introduction of group play has diluted UCL. Madrid's run in the knockouts is what UCL should be about. The occasional minnow tripping the giant is good for the sport. Giving chances to the smaller clubs would strengthen the game not watching the big clubs dominate. 😔

But now big clubs are guaranteed not only Champions League football but knock out rounds in the UCL as well, so that they do not have to fear a Barcelona situation, which in turn makes the league phase less interesting and I thought improving the group stage was the main goal…

Maybe uefa/someone can explain on what basis, when teams do not play with the same oponents, the goal differences will be a fair and valid method to resolve the issue when teams have the same points. Also it will be very interesting to see how teams that have minimal chance if going through will react when they may know of this 3 or 4 games before the 'group/league' end, and not just 1 or 2 games before tge end, and as a result how many results in the last third if the campaign will end up being but not fixed because these teams will try to conserve player time for their country league games.
