Bairstow will be remembered as a player who gave absolutely everything. He was barely fit in the 2023 Ashes but still gave his all, after an injury that would have ended careers of people with less bottle. He was one of the most feared white ball openers between 2015 and 2021, who scored runs for fun at an astonishing rate. He was also one of the fastest fielders as a sweeper before his injury. I’ll never forget his 100 at 3 in Sri Lanka when he just exuded pure passion. As an England fan, I also think a team with Jonny in, is a team that also cares and will always fight to the fullest.

For all the critics aimed at bairstow he was the only player who clawed back england from the 5th test against india when india hold the aces till lunch on 4th day. Without him the series would have been handed over to india and 3-1 scoreline the end result. Since the devastating injury he has played 10 test matches and almost scored a century with 99 on the fourth ashes test. Let us compare pope, crawley with him. After roughly 40 test matches both have the same average and test hundreds. Even stokes has the same average. I honestly believe that if bairstow is given the backing he will for sure come good. He was the only player who scored a match saving century in down under. Rob Key should be reminded of his contributions.

I first met Jonny when he was a 15 year old playing against my son's team. He was astonishingly talented, but a really unpleasant, mouthy individual. He was clearly devastated by his father's death and it affected him. I met him about 6 years ago at York when I was playing there and he was watching and he was mature and pleasant. He's probably one of England's greatest white ball players and a good test wicketkeeper batsman. He'd have been even better if England hadn't messed him about so much.
