How Western media chooses who they champion and vilify | The Listening Post

With Alexey Navalny’s death and Julian Assange’s extradition appeal happening within a week of each other, we look at the selective treatment of the two dissenters in the Western media.
Lead contributors:
Chip Gibbons - Policy Director, Defending Rights & Dissent
Matt Kennard - Chief Investigator, Declassified UK
Branko Marcetic - Writer, Jacobin
Rebecca Vincent - Director of Campaigns, Reporters Without Borders (RSF)
On our radar:
Usually silent in the face of the suffering in Gaza, Israeli TV channels broadcast segments on the abuse of Palestinian captives - with a positive spin. Tariq Nafi reports.
Namibia’s (mis)remembered genocide
Germany’s genocide in Namibia early in the 20th century has long been a misremembered episode in colonial history. Despite efforts to correct that record, many are yet to hear the testimonies of the victimised communities: the Herero and Nama peoples.
Featuring:
Christina Haritos - Communications Scholar
Suzie Ndaundika Shefeni - Researcher and Journalist
Jephta Nguherimo - Herero Activist and Poet

Oddly, I'm able to respond under an article from Al Jazeera (I still can't post under other videos, I just looked. The "Reply" button is dimmed). The reason why different images are painted for Navalny and Assange in West is that Navalny was in the service of the CIA and other Western secret services, while Assange was an idealist and an independent journalist who exposed war crimes committed by the US. This is the truth expressed in one sentence.

  • @ebflegg

Yes, that's true, and moreover millions all over the world are grateful to Assange for exposing the crimes of US imperialism, whereas Navalny had very little support even in Russia. His significance has been inflated by the western media as part of the US/UK/EU strategy of political subversion and regime change in Russia. As with the young woman who died in Iran, giving rise to street violence supported by the West, it's not even clear how or why he died

Thank you for posting this. Western narratives are that in 2020 Putin agents poisoned Navalny with the nerve agent Novichok. It is claimed it was in at least one beverage that he drank and in contact with his skin via his underwear. He apparently recovered from this and no one in his association was at all affected by exposure to Novichok. From the Wikipedia page on Novichok- “Russian scientists who developed the nerve agents claim they are the deadliest ever made, with some variants possibly five to eight times more potent than VX.” There are alternate explanations as to what Navalny was actually about. @Sobkow07 proposes the one non-US government experts consider more likely. Disappointing Al Jazeera goes along with the Western governments’ narrative.

Navalny had his support base in Russia just as Mahsa Amini was a popular figure for millions of Iranian women who now boycott the hijab rule and walk around without a hijab. It is ok to point out inconsistencies in the Western narrative, but you obviously have shown your own bias by claiming that Navalny and Mahsa Amini were just western products while in reality they were not, but for that you would need to know Russian or Persian or have local contacts, which you obviously dont.

When a whistleblower reveals violations of international law, there should be ironclad protection for them - especially when the USA is involved. This country has been out of control for decades, and no one, not even our own journalists, holds us accountable. Assange should be freed and compensated for the years he's spent in prison/with severely restricted movement. I hope it goes without saying that all whistleblowers, at every level, should be protected from prison and persecution.

Sadly, here in the UK, it seems that America tells us who the good guys and the bad guys are. We don't get to decide that for ourselves. We were on pretty good terms with countries like Russia and China - certainly not enemies - from the 1990s to the 2010s. But in recent years, as we've slid further into America's pocket, their chosen enemies have become our "inherited" enemies too. And that's how we've ended up with an insane situation where our "leaders" proudly condemn Russia for what happened to Navalny while they're colluding with America to do exactly the same to Assange. Because the Navalny story suits their "Russia bad" narrative, they're even willing to overlook things like Navalny's appalling "cockroaches" comments - something which, if a dissenter here had uttered those words, would be weaponised against him and make it unthinkable that he be called a hero. The double standards are truly grotesque.

A tool used by Americans” , sent beyond the Arctic Circle, suffering from hunger close to starvation, deprived of sleep on permanent basis, held in cold filthy cells. And finally murdered on the eve of his exchange for the Russian assassin detained in Germany…Navalny is a hero. Assange is a brave journalist, but as a man he is much weaker than Navalny. A High security British jail is not the same as Stalin’s Gulag. And keep in mind that the Western media attention is still vitally important for millions of Russians living under very cruel regime.
