Sex, Lies and Julian Assange (2012) | Four Corners

When Julian Assange arrived in Sweden in August 2010 he was greeted like a conquering hero.
But within weeks there was a warrant out for his arrest and he was being investigated for rape and sexual molestation.
Until recently he was taking sanctuary in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London, arguing he won't receive justice if he's taken to Sweden and that US authorities are building a case for his extradition.
In this program from 2012, Four Corners reporter Andrew Fowler examines in detail what happened in those crucial weeks while Julian Assange was in Sweden. What was the nature of his relationship with the two women who claim he assaulted them? And what did they tell police that led the authorities to seek his arrest?
Both Assange and his supporters believe the attempt by authorities to force his return to Sweden is simply the first step in a plan to see him extradited to the United States.
Four Corners looks at claims the United States is working hard to unearth evidence that would lead to a charge of "conspiracy to commit espionage" being made against Assange - which in turn would be used in his extradition from Sweden.
The program also documents the harassment experienced by Assange's supporters across the globe - including his Australian lawyer - and the FBI's attempts to convince some to give evidence against him.

    @ ILLEGAL RACERS - I disagree, in many situations and circumstances the unauthorised release of information, including but not limited to classified material etc etc is illegal. In many occupations it is a condition of employment not to disclose certain information. Here in Australia, like many other countries around the world there are specific statutes that deal with the unauthorised disclosure, receipt or use of such material. Are you seriously suggesting that sovereign nations be prevented from protecting certain information? Or would you be happy, as per your comment that all information held by Governments be immediately available publically. Further, in relation to your view that leaking information is not a crime, well that's exactly what Assange is facing at the moment. Allegations that what he did was in fact a crime. Assange supporters believe he did the world a great service, he is a hero of the people and that his actions caused no harm. It is those opinions and views that supporters rely upon to call for Assange's immediate release and the withdrawal of all charges. Some say (even on this post) that the prosecution of Assange is a conspiracy involving Zionists and "the new world order". In my opinion, those who believe that need to adjust their tin foil hats because they're a little too tight. Despite being well documented and even addressed by Wikileaks in a formal apology no one who supports Assange is willing to talk about the huge number of innocent third parties who's personal and political information was released without consent. This unauthorised release put innocent people in harms way. One such release relates to citizens of Turkey. This occurred well before the recent attempted coup in which thousands of people were arrested. You can not tell me that the Government of Turkey did not review that information to identify persons opposed to them politically. However, more recently Wikileaks released personal information of ICE Agents and other Immigration staff in the Untied States. The reason was to protest and highlight the US Government's policy to separate children from parents who entered the country illegally. Wikleaks defended their action by saying that the information was already publically available. However, the list of over 9,000 Immigration staff was put together by another activist who spent a great deal of time researching and trawling through various social media sites. As a result, a specific list was completed which in my opinion, negates the defence that the information was already publically available. I am certain that if a similar list was compiled and released by Law Enforcement relating to Wikileaks, Antifa or any other politically motivated group there would be calls condemning that action, citing harassment and intimidation.

    @Mr G - your statement has no validity at all. The Australian Government has provided the same assistance to Assange as they would provide to any other Australian citizen who finds themselves in legal trouble in another sovereign country. We know that he saw Australian officials when he was inside the Embassy and they have also been to Belmarsh prison. We also know that a few years ago the Government provided assistance to Assange to have his Australian pass port renewed. Others have stated that Australia should demand Assange be released and other have even suggested that he be removed forcibly and returned to Australia. Assange is currently involved in a complicated legal process involving a number of different countries and that's why those suggestions are ludicrous. Finally, you, like others on this subject seem to be blaming Zionists for the position Assange finds himself in.

Was she referring to the information which exposed the US army murdering the Iraqi civilians from their helicopter and then flying back to shoot at and murder the first responders? That wouldn't be illegal would it? But reporting it would be? and " ... a grossly irresponsible thing to do.." The establishment must not ever be wrong nor accountable !

    I don't really care about Assange's private life. But the parts about the two women who accused him of sexual crimes shed some light on his being a more responsible person than what the main stream media made him out to be. Borgstrom, the lawyer for the two women, gave zero reason for why Assange should be extradited to Sweden. Assange's contribution in exposing US war crimes was a huge service to humanity. Great job, ABC, for showing the details that have never be shown before!

  • @pirbird14

    @pirbird14

    They didn't accuse him. The police did. The women went to the police to see if Assange could be compelled to take an STD test. They wanted that because they were unsure of whether he had used a condom. The one woman refused to testify any further after she learned he was being charged. That's the story told in this video (and other places); and I think it's just bizarre. You'd have to be incredibly naive to imagine that this incident wouldn't be used against an activist as prominent as Julian. His lawyer said it looked like a setup and I agree. I read years ago that one of these women had been a CIA asset; but, you don't hear about that very much any more.
