ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
SKIP TO TIME STAMP 4:26 MINUTES TO GET RIGHT TO THE TATTOOING.
This is how we tattoo our rabbits.
To those few that've been waiting for this, thank you for that. I hope you enjoy the video. I added the links below in case anyone would like to try the ez tatt pen. It does work very well. Be sure to dip your pen in ink before every digit/letter. I dip the pen after every line or curve. Thank you for watching. We like to tattoo rabbits around 8-10 weeks old. We find it easier to tattoo younger rabbits than 1-2 year old rabbits. We choose to use the pen instead of the pliers because our tattoos seem to last longer with the pen and when using numbing spray they barely feel it with very little movement Although the pliers are quick they can fade and also does punch through the ear sometimes and sends the rabbit airborne when clamping. But if you want a quick and easy solution to the job pliers may be for you. I'm just sharing what we do and how we minimize any stress or pain the tattoo process may cause. I included a pliers link below if you'd feel more comfortable doing your tattoos that way. I'm not here to convince you either way.

We used to use the ear clamps to tattoo our bunnies. I think it was the #300 tattoo clamp from Stone. Bunnies didn't care at all when we did it. It was 15 seconds and done. Then you roll/brush on the ink and voila your bunnies are tattooed.

They're great for when you have a lot of rabbits. Some rabbits don't mind and others go air born. The younger the better. The one thing I like about the tattoo gun is it leaves a bold and brighter id#. It takes longer but it's easier to read. The stamper tattoo fades a little so after a year or two you really need to focus to see what it reads.

  • @SilverFlame819

@@TheRabbitryCenter If they're fading or hard to read, you need more practice, and better ink. This is why most people use ink paste, rather than liquid. Bold, bright colors that stay in the holes as the ear heals. Also, green ink helps. You can see it clearly against dark skin.

Rabbits are pretty hearty in general they’re not like cows that need antibiotics I would keep them chemical free and concentrate on high quality nutrition at least 16% protein at least 17 to 18% fiber -supplement your feed with dry clean hay freshwater every 12 hours and they’ll be right as rain

We use the tattoo numbers to quickly know the age and what bloodline that particular rabbit belongs to. That's it. The date of birth is labeled on the pedigree. Everyone tattoos differently based on there system and needs.

Couldn't you just number them sequentially kindle after kindle after kindle? Most people wouldn't get past 2 digits (99+ kits) for a very, very long time. I doubt even the KZread "experts" would get past 999 kits, and surely not 999 that you'd have in your backyard at the same time (you could reuse the same numbers after the kit was "gone" with a new kit). You're going to be keeping track separately what the tattoo means (and the lineage) anyways, so why not just keep it simple?

I have watched young and old tattooing their rabbit ears on KZread With a tattoo pen. “IT LOOKS SO EASY “ I Tried to tattoo my bucks ear today. Not that easy. I applied everything I seen on KZread the poor rabbit he stayed calm the whole time. I let the pen run in the inkwell. But it just did not pick up the ink. Can you tell me what I was doing wrong. I think his ear might be tattooed now but at the poor expense of the rabbit. He has earned some respect in my book for what I put him through. So if you could tell me or know of somewhere I can find out how to operate the tattoo pen. I even tried pouring Inc in the little hole in the metal tip. And at one time I hit the bottom side of the inkwell. The cup and ink flew all over. Any help or advice would greatly be appreciated.

Yikes I'm sorry your having so much trouble with it. It sounds like you may need to fill the ink dish with more ink. You can practice on bananas. Be sure to not only get ink on the needle but Submerge the tattoo pen (when it's off) in the dish. The nipple should have ink on it. The needle will push the ink into the skin smearing ink with every line. You'll need to wipe the skin, dip the pen and tattoo another little line. You might need to change out your needle if you bumped it on the dish it may be fine but it might be damaged. If you still have trouble I'd either try a different pen or a stamper. Hope that helps

Rex rabbits are terrific choice. You have mini rex for pets and full size rex which slightly smaller than a new zealand. Their fur is velvety soft and can stay comfortable in cold temps down to about -10F. New Zealand's fur keeps them comfortable at -30F. But at that temperature your bucks are in danger of going sterile for a short period.

What if you happened to have more than 5 does/bucks in a litter? What numbers do they get? We are just starting out our rabbitry and the breeder we bought our doe says they have litters of 6 at the least up to 14 at most. Just curious how you would do the tattoos for numbers that high.

  • @TheRabbitryCenter

    @TheRabbitryCenter

In most cases new moms will have small litters around 4-6 and every litter after will get larger topping out around 12-14 kits. Instead of using numbers you can use letters for boys and numbers for girls its up to you how you'd like to tattoo your rabbits.

I do not understand why anyone would ever choose to use a gun when it takes FOREVER. If you don't numb it first, it's completely inhumane, and most hand-done tats are not going to be as neat and tidy as pliers. I find it bizarre that anyone would ever choose this route. Is it just to save money on the letters and numbers??

It's the gun tats I usually see disappearing, because there is a definite art to doing them, and most people have not figured that art out. I have a bunch of rabbits that I bought within the last 10 months in my barn that were done with guns, and several of them have barely legible tats at this time. Some of their tats peeled like crazy, so I could tell the numbing spray was used and then not cleaned off, and others just weren't tattooed deeply enough. The pliers are simply more reliable. You just to squeeze hard and fast. No art required.

This is a channel that helps folks get started with meat production in their backyard. Since the 80's the house rabbit has become very popular. I understand how cute they are. The history of farming rabbits is one of the oldest traditions for self sustaining families. It enable them to produce inexpensive high quality meat at a very affordable price. This day and age with the meat shortage in the stores and the chemicals that're in the meat that's available, Meat eating families need these videos as much as folks need their pets.
