How We Say No Matters | Liz Marasco | TEDxBoulder
Scholars in conversation analysis have known for a long time that we try to avoid using the word 'no'. We rely on a number of other linguistic resources to 'say no' in order to save face. So why is this word necessary in one very specific, high-stakes situation? Liz Marasco has Master of Arts in Linguistics from CU Boulder where she specialized in conversation analysis. So? What's the advice? And she only refers to dealing with partners when the inability to say No affects all sorts of relationships.

Great video! Perfect for undergrad and grad discourse analysis classes. But please, data = plural noun.
I was told when I tell people to stop that I don't sound like I mean it. And when I say it, I don't even say "stoooooop!" Or "nooooo!" They only stop when I use violence. So I've just taken to threats. But now everyone knows I won't follow up on those threats and I don't have an answer to sounding like I mean it.
