How We Rescued An Abandoned Pig | Life in a Medieval Château

Clement gets an abandoned pig for his birthday and we have to make a home for it pronto. How many electric shocks will Marc get as he tries to repair a Cold War-era electric fence? Will the other animals accept the pig? Will Amy accept the pig? Join us this week to find out!

Juliette seems to be mesmerized by daddy's voice. She looks so comfortable in such odd positions. Good daddy Marc. I know Amy appreciates his help. He's a natural. I got a baby pot bellied pig when Peter Pig was 6 weeks old. He lived in the house as a dog would and I potty trained him. When he became 110 lbs I re-homed him to a farm close to where I was living at that time. Pete was a sweet boy.

Another delightful episode introducing Piggy. I always look forward to your vlogs. We spent all our childhood vacations on our grandparent’s farm which was established near Berlin, Germany, in the early 1800s so I watch your farm life with great joy and nostalgia. There’s nothing like exploring a dusty attic finding treasure. And nothing like being shocked by an electric fence….The last time I found my grandmother’s Art Deco crystal pink vanity set she brought when she married my grandfather. It’s lovely and must have been a wedding gift. My cousin and I pieced the history together, realizing the bedroom suite was also Art Deco but from a catalog. Farmers are frugal people. I was so glad when my cousin gave it to me and it has now pride of place in my own bedroom. Family history! Omi and Opa were also once young and full of joy and hope. When the last uncle passed on, we as four cousins, decided to keep it as a family vacation home. Of course there’s always one who wants the money so we paid her out. We leased out the pastures and wheat fields so it’s the homestead, outbuildings and Grandma’s farm garden which is now a wildflower meadow. But the old lilacs and berry bushes are still there. To others - and the renegade - it’s nothing but a crumbling pile of old, dusty, filthy brick and stone. But for us it’s our childhood and the memories and the connection to a long line of hardworking people. My three cousins living close by maintain it and I do hope to visit next year again! I live in Houston, Texas. To us it’s our homeland. Our Heimat.

In the U.S. some small pigs only eat grass. It takes a long time to grow big enough to harvest an eat. They are usually friendly. Heritage breeds are popular with homesteaders.

I have piggy envy. I absolutely love pigs! I'd happily have some here on my little block. I had pigs here about 35 years ago, but alas they got sold at Christmas when they were a couple of years old. I did have a little work pig for a couple of years too, she was madly in love with our calf, she chased him around the house all day! But she had to go as did the calf. I do hope you get piggy "fixed" they're much quieter and easy to handle. Piggies are very social animals, they'll quite happily eat from your hand and follow you around. I had a laugh at Marc fixing the fence unit, been there, done that with my old one. I think the coil had broken on my one too, must be a common fault on old units! It's just as well I learnt to solder in my misspent youth! Handy skill isn't it? But I never electrocuted myself! Hope piggy has a long and happy life at Rosieres! Much love and big hugs 🤗♥️🤗

Hi there Amy, I know this is a little late, however my husband urged me to send a comment. I may be repeating others comments or you may have already learnt this. But if not then it may be helpful to you. Your wee pig looks like a Vietnamese Potbelly Cross breed. (A purebred shouldnt have any white markings) He can grow quite large and heavy being a cross because of hybrid vigor. He can live up to 25 years old if he's well looked after and you keep an eye on the condition of his teeth which can start to rot and wear down noticeably when he hits his teens. If he's a boar, he should /may grow tusks which can become sharp and need paring back for safety. He can and will bite if he gets annoyed and if he does grow tusks he will use those too. If he's not castrated and you plan to keep him for his life, I urge you to castrate him. Also an electric fence will not stop a pig that takes fright. They will run flat out and go through, between or under the fence. We have very recently lost the last of our pigs to old age. My beautiful PJ was a 20 yr old, Kune Kune Boar (also a minature breed), he was just over 200 kgs (not fat, just solid with the weight of his cartilage like armour). He was like a walking brick & he grew to the size of a shetland pony. He had massive tusks but had lost all of his molars from grass grazing over the years, so the last 3 years of his life he was feed 3 times a day by me. We taught him early on to walk on a dog harness for ease of shifting him etc. But when he grew tusks we used a pig board as well to ensure there was wood between us and him. We also taught him to sit, roll over and stay. All for ease of handling him. But being an intelligent boy he liked the challenge and the stimulation. He was good natured most of the time, however he was also very territorial and could be aggressive to strangers, dogs and horses. We are experienced pig owners , who previously had a free range breeding operation of 200 Berkshire Sows and half a dozen Boars. The minature breeds don't grow as big as our Commercial pigs, but a boar is a boar and can be aggressive and unpredictable at times. So prevention is better than cure. PS he would also appreciate a water wallow as pigs don't sweat so the wallow helps them stay cool and fly free in the summer. Love your Vlog by the way X

please tell me his name is Pumba. I feel like Clement and Juliette will need a Pumba in their life. And pigs are just sooo smart. How he immediately knows to wait for you to cover the wire with the plank and then just trots out! Also I think Clement was being really clever as well, when he tried to emulate putting up the fencing rods. He just watched and immediately knew he should push down on it with his foot. Just the balance wasn‘t there yet.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE put a WARNING ⚠️ for future videos involving Mark and electricity ⚡️ I was at my doctors office in the waiting room packed full of people with my headphones on when Mark electrocuted himself. I completely lost it. I couldn’t stop 🛑 I started laughing so hard then even harder when he once again asked you to hold his hand on shoulders. I nearly peed my pants. I started laughing harder because everyone was just staring at me. Some looked worried like I could have been some junkie/zombie about to chew their face off. Seriously. Disclaimers keep people like myself from embarrassing themselves in public. Honestly best laugh I’ve had in awhile so thank you so much. Your husband kinda comes off as sweet and shy but I’m seeing more and more that he has a magnificent sense of humor and your laughter is so genuine and hilarious. I think adding a pig to your little family of animals was the logical next step in the evolution of the property and there were more reason but Mark wouldn’t pay me enough for more thought out reasons for having a pig. He wants alpacas 🦙 next. Can’t wait to see you next week.

What a sweet and adorable pig. Pigs are very intelligent and lovely family pets. They are very family oriented so they will warm up to you if you’re gentle with them. They can easily become part of the family in a house. Pigs are not given enough credit for their intelligence and their interactive skills with humans. You’re giving him a chance to get to know you and they easily warm up to you. I would look up the breed you have and their temperament and what they like and get to know him better. I’ve never seen a black haired pig with a white spot on his face he is adorable and unique. He’s already become very friendly in three months. They are so adaptable.🌈🇨🇦

Maybe wear a leather or rubber glove while working on the transformer or at least disconnect from the power source till you’re done 😵‍💫. Juliettte is growing so fast, she’s so sweet.🥰 Good luck with the pig and Happy Belated Birthday to Clement.

I feel the orchard full of dropped fruit is a recipe for a drunk pig … 😂 there is this one documentary from maybe the 90s or early 2000s, where a lot of animals in the African wilderness all eat overripe fruit and get hilariously drunk. Stumbling elephants, monkeys and so on…

What joy to watch you all, and the adorable babies are growing so fast! And the cute little piggy , they use to love to nest in lots of hay and straw to dive in under , they also love blankets to hide under when they sleep, I think he will be an even more happier piggy 🐷

You could make an arc for piggy out of a piece of cororgated , can't spell it,iron like we have in England. They look very simple to make, bit of straw and that's it. And a nice muddy puddle for him to wallow. This episode made me giggle.

Pigs are emotionally intelligent and social animals - very much like dogs. He would love have a companion one day... once he's fixed that is (wink-wink). You're creating such an enriching environment for your children to grow up in. Blessings to all the chateau inhabitants!
