This is one of those episodes that truly marks the original time team …..team as great ….the presenters , experts and film crew wing a lot of it so so well and that is true professionalism and passion for subject

Stewart shall be named "Sir Dances with Topography." What a brilliant chap. Touche.

I can watch this for hours. Beautifully produced, great team, great photography, great music! I also really like that unlike most in the genre of reality shows, people are repectful, and seem genuine and authentic. Awesome program. Love, love, love the team.

This is not reality TV. This is documentary.

Watching this old episode right after watching the two new digs, I miss the clarity and continuity of the presentation. I prefer the little things, like highlighting where the change in color in a ditch shows up. And I really enjoy the recreations of what life was like in the time the site was in use. I hope future digs include some of these things, as it transforms the program from a dry (and somewhat confusing) documentary into informative entertainment.

@@TheShootist Why oh why do so many of these people expect Tony Robinson to be cloned. These are probably the crowd who complained about him in the original run of TT.

I've come to appreciate many episodes of Time Team but, I must say, this episode was truly impressive. The swordsmiths of that time period were indeed masters of their craft. It's been a long time since my training, but if I recall correctly, it takes about 200 pounds of force - or about 900 Newtons - to perforate that area of the skull. This was indeed an interesting episode and I thank you for posting. Be safe folks 🙏

Think of in terms of 1 horse power behind the force of swing. Sadly, they found it was a woman, and the bone slice was performed by doctors . Where she died on the table, they believed when they were trying to relieve swelling.

Of all Victor's drawings, that last one is my absolute favorite.

Tony really changes with the episodes. His mullet was replaced with a chin beard which was changed to a clean shaven face. We’ve watched all of the guys age proper. Mick and Phil stayed somewhat the same.

I love the logical and simple way of the lying in the field shows how cool it is when looking for earthworks!!

Phil had a number of hats over the years of time teams 20 or more series. He also changes the feathers and pins attached to each hat. One hat was like an Australian Akubra (think cowboy hat) and another was like what a re-enactment archer (think robin hood) would wear with a short crown and a pointy brim at the front. I watch these over and over! Just love the vibe between everyone and I end up learning so much! Amazing though, how they always know so much just from looking at a tiny sherd of pottery!

After hearing her talk about how she was ridiculed for her comments, I had to go back and watch the episode again. I still don't understand why she was given such a hard time for it. Live TV is a daunting task. I thought she did fine for her first outing!

I I hope it was good natured teasing. Must be so hard to be on the spot and feeling somewhat pushed for an answer. Some people find it very hard to say they don't know (at that moment), because they might dissapoint the person asking.

I'm glad there coming back to tv well KZread so I guess they'll be using KZread money so KZread production? Eh? Idk how it will go, but if the show stays the same I wont mind a bit. I was that one kid instead of cartoons and the usual spongebob episode I would love watching documentarys and those kind of shows like this or the best ones which I got my friends at the time 10-11 years hooked to watching was WW2 and Vietnam war documentarys lol. Also I will state my graduating year was 2012 so I also seen all the bullshit end of the world stuff 2012 came and went hahahah....but I swear I've learned more out of high school on KZread from reputable channels it's crazy. If you knew the right ones you could home school a child off of guided KZread videos and adding yourself in as a parent there to help guide and answer questions which means you also need to be competent. But I'm sure someone will have a very different look, most likely no one will read, or they wont read and just leave a random comment. Reply if you want to converse more on any of these topics or any one of your choosing (enter your momma discussion) just so you know it's up for debate hahah. Btw she's dead. Of cancer to the brain lungs and bones.

@@MasterMatter Of course, like any source of information, YT videos require a sifting out of reputable ones. I wouldn't want to venture a measurement but for every bigfoot/alien/5g/etc. one there must be several that are verifiable and dependable. I agree, that a parent could use them to educate effectively but they would be better served as a jumping off point. A beginning from which the parent could say, "Okay, that's interesting. Why don't you go to the library and try to figure out why it is?"

Phil would go bonkers on the Jicarilla Apache or Navajo Reservations in the 4 corners area. Arrowheads and pottery still litter the ground everywhere, on the surface. At 37:40, where they lie down to see the hill, you can actually do this in a calm lake and lower yourself into the water til it's just below your eyeballs and you can see the curvature of the earth.Try it sometime.

The update on the skeleton discovered at Bawsey is given in their 2nd "Christmas Special" which aired on December 19th, 1999. Oh, after the dramatic interpretation of a sword blow aimed from a galloping horse, that comes as somehow disappointing. I was imagining an attack, as in the Uhtred series of novels by Bernard Cornwell.

Gracious I cannot get over how low resolution TV used to be back in the day. I have no memory of it ever being this bad even though I'm 30 years old, and surely was watching this type of resolution at the time and thought it was a okay. We truly have become spoiled with HD and 4K video. As always I love the content and please keep releasing more episodes as soon as possible.

HAHAHAAA. Low resolution??! To me, this looks great. I'm 52 and remember TV when the picture would roll, there were 3 channels, and they all went off at about 1 am. Spoiled indeed!

@@eoyguy And there was a special dial that you could use to make the roll a little less, but sometimes it would just go the opposite way and make it worse. Not to mention the white noise and the position you sat in the room actually affected the reception quality because the antenna interference. XD

Every time Carenza pronounces the preposition "there" my Texan heart flutters.

I recon that this chap with swordblow on his head was actual a woman, or better a nun, who survived the blow for some hours and they tried to save her live. She died on the table of the healer. I think, they found it out within the post dig analysis and aired it in a christmas episode.

Just imagine, under the earth all over Britain there are the concealed traces of all those who lived so long ago. The remains of their homes, their coins, their belongings, their skeletons. From the iron age to the Romans. And everywhere they are just built over and only the archaeologists can tell - if allowed to dig - who they were and when and how they lived there.

It's exciting to imagine that Phil could find an arrow head he made in a previous life?

What fun! I’d love to be in the middle of the dig. But watching it is the next best thing.

I always watch these and try to find the sites on Google earth. I use the site description and the aerial photos and such, but I don’t know why I do it. It’s just an exercise in frustration, lol. If it’s not a famous castle or tourist site then I find them about 2% of the time. “Near Kings Lynn” and “Over there is the sea” just didn’t help. I guess things change dramatically in 20 years, I can’t even find the road configuration shown in the photo. .......I should really stop driving myself batty doing that. 😂😂😂 🇺🇸🍻🇬🇧

Usually they do a commentary on Time Team Official and have a link to the Wessex Archeology write up that gives a better description of the location. No commentary on this episode. I've rewatched this and something came to mind. One does not build a church alone and not in one day. Where did the stonemasons, carpenters, labourers, cooks et al live while the building was under construction? That must surely have left a mark on the ground?

If it’s just buildings yeah, depending on region and type of settlement you can only hope to find shadows of walls or post holes, or limitation lines of buildings on different soil, rubbish pits and burn pit reactions on EM if it wasn’t destroyed by farming or land development. Even if markings can be found on topographic or aerial surveys, they could be all just vestiges, there also the chance that antiquarians disturbed and refilled ditches in haphazardly, destroying any dating evidence (or when people landscape their gardens in such ways that puzzle archeologists years later, like finding ww2 barbed wire underneath seemingly medieval still-standing walls and such)…

i wonder why ive never heard james may mention time team... he seems like hed fit right in

I don’t think you can. There are a number of episodes on Europe-only DVDs, but there is no “Complete Collection” of all 20 years/280 episodes of the show.

The digging itself was broadcast live. Then later an edited episode was made from the recording of the live broadcast. They did several of this type of broadcast.

@@Newman81964 They were editing for a condensed version that was shown that week, at a time when most people watched terrestrial TV channels in the UK and were all aware of the live broadcasts. I imagine no one then was thinking that we would be watching in 2020 and it's a bit late to do a reshoot, don't you think?

Incidentally people often ask why we get Sandy or Bill Oddie on some digs, one of the reasons was the live broadcasts when a presenter was needed at two different sites at the same time. The Jorvik dig was a good example of that. Not that Ms Toksvig needs any excuse to be on my screen.

Tony with hair. I feel young again. Also, that seriously looks like bad green-screening in the open. The background music sounds so much like Howard Shore's Hobbit themes. I'm guessing it's (vaguely) medieval, which shows the research Shore put into his composition.

Isn't it more likely that the horseman was riding towards the man - much more power in a forward slice than a backwards swing?

Seems an easier blow as a backhanded blow more force an control in a passing cut. A forehand strike I would think a larger area would be aimed for there is more time to aim😊

I totally disagree. She sadly appears in several episodes, partly or totally ruining them. She is an extremely irritating person. Very bad choice of the production team. Every time she starts rattling away with her nasal voice I immediately think: 'Oh, shut the f*ck off!...
