HOW WE MET On A Remote Scottish Island - Isle of Harris Special - Outer Hebrides - Ep71

Willie, Sarah and their dogs Jack Spaniels & new puppy, Nori, continue their biggest adventure yet - leaving their suburban life and moving over the sea to a remote cottage on the Isle of Skye, off the west coast of the Scottish Highlands.
In this episode, the Skye Lifers are still in the stunning archipelago of islands called the Outer Hebrides. This time, however, we are chasing the sun to the north and taking a trip through history on the Isle of Lewis. From 5000 year old stone circles, to mysterious Iron Age structures and finally an insight into an almost forgotten rural way of life.
Plus, we take a walk on the final day of our trip and reflect on our personal connection to this island, as we tell the story of how we first met...
Thanks for watching & see you in the next video!

A friend of mine was a pharmacist on Lewis, he had a croft house and barn in a little hamlet called islibhig on the isle of Lewis. When he left the island he retained the croft house but turned it into a bothy for anyone to use as shelter. I went with him for a visit to the property at the end of the 90's. I remember I was going through stress at the time, and just being in this place made me realise how most things were insignificant in comparison to this beautiful landscape. On the way back after a week on the island we visit a a beach called Hushinish on Harris which was absolutely beautiful, and looked like a Caribbean beach, little rowing boat drawn up, just stunning!

That stone circle reminds me of my native culture we also have circles that have 4 dividing lines we call it the 4 directions medicine wheel if you google it many books will come up. Many peoples around the world have many ancient similarities that it just boggles the mind to know how manystill exist today. My imagination goes crazy when thinking of what life was like back then on a remote Island because getting to and from the mainland must have been terrifying in bad weather. Loved it!!!

Thank goodness for Tinder and other sites where like minded people can meet up with a view to friendship and maybe ❤. My daughter met her now New Zealand 🇳🇿 husband on one of these dating sites when she moved from the UK on her own to live and work in New Zealand. She is a nurse and worked shifts and nights so it was difficult to meet people. Her first meet up was for a coffee at lunchtime and her second was to meet his parents! I felt relieved that he wasn't an axe murderer! Married at 41, their handsome son born at 42. The moral of this tale is that there is hope and there are people out there. ❤

It blows my mind how amazing those drone shots are that you take. Something that would have once needed a helicopter camera crew is now available to anyone. Still not particularly cheap, but a bit more affordable! They really add a lot to the story, the arial shots of the standing stones and the roads, to the ferry at the end. Take them out and you still have a good video, but they add so much.

I was a huge fan for first couple of seasons but gradually lost interest when they left Scotland. Without the impending battle of Culloden the series seemed to lose its focus. Sam seemed to lose interest, his passionate personality appeared diminished and the myriad of disparate secondary characters did not trigger any interest in their fortunes. Brianna's lack of acting ability was a real disappointment verging on embarrassment. I would have loved to experience the effects the catastrophic battle had on the people and landscape of Scotland and how the English took advantage of their victory to tear out the heart of this once proud nation.

My husband, Peter, 'stumbled' on your channel a couple of months or so ago. We watched one of your vlogs and I was hooked. I started watching from the beginning, with your first vlog, watching one a day - sometimes two when we were having Skye like winds and rain here on the North Norfolk coast! Yesterday, I watched Ep71; I am now up to date. I have so enjoyed watching how life is panning out for you, with your ups and downs and welcoming your new addition to the clan. You have inspired me to 'have a go' at vloging with my simple camera, phone and our camcorder, covering various aspects of our life, here in Overstrand. I have, of course, subscribed so I won't miss any of your future vlogs. Peter grows most of our veggies, so I'm looking forward to seeing what those raised beds produce. Take care and stay safe. Just found your KZread channel, and I'm really enjoying it! When you say that nobody knows what these brocks are about, I find that interesting. 🤔I've never heard of them or seen them before, but to me it's really obvious that they are places where the community would run to to find shelter if marauding neighbors decided it was time to rape, plunder and pillage! If you have only one small entrance into this structure, you would be pretty safe. And there are two walls that would have to be breached from the outside. Also, that narrow circular passage could be a place to store food. This just seems like the best use for this ancient structure. Thank you for sharing!🌺🌈💚🙋‍♀️

Went to the Outer Hebrides over 20yrs ago and was blown away by the beauty of the place. Blessed by Mediterranean style weather for 2 weeks...ok perhaps not quite as hot but glorious anyway. Bought a photograph of the Stones at Callanaish from a nearby gallery. The central stone had snow on top of it making it look like slice of wedding cake. Did the Black house...remarkably cosy and smoky! Fabulous unforgettable holiday.

Love your videos, but you made me so homesick! I loved your last one where you took the ferry over to the remote island. The beauty of the nature and beaches was incredible. Oh, how I could easily live over there! Good thing, here in northern Vermont, USA we have some really beautiful nature, but nothing can compare to what you have.

The standing stones are amazing and very stunning. Nice to see in solitude. Makes you wonder who placed them and why.

Your videos get better and better. The interior of the black--house fascinated me. The broch sequence would have been far less informative without your accomplished drone shots, and they were also great for the ferry arrival. It was courageous of you to talk about how you met each other but I think we viewers very much appreciated you sharing that with us.

Loved the little tour of the rest of Harris & Lewis you showed us! I always looked forward to the weekly uploads although it's a shame it's not a Sunday night upload for us here in Aus! Would love if you could get down to Oban one day and show us around. It's somewhere I'm hoping to get to myself when I can make another trip to the Scottish Highlands. Otherwise we'd love to see more of the Outer Hebrides!

I've visited lots of stones and circles, but Calanais (like the ring of Brodgar) has a very different feel about it. Almost like we are just visitors to the stones and the people who put them there are watching on protecting them. It's hard to put into words, but it's a feeling I've rarely felt elsewhere (and I'm not a superstitious or easily spooked person). If you've not already been, Kilmartin Glen (near Oban) is well worth a visit. So many ancient sites in such a small area, and great walks too!

I think it's so wonderful how considerate you both are to the other animals (ie sheep, highland cows, seals etc.) when you're out and about with the pups....those Calanais stones are wild, so much history and the mystery of why they originated is so interesting.

I've never been to Scotland, so why is it that I always end up so emotional at the beautiful journeys you make? Love Jack listening to everything that is said to him, I suspect that doggie has more intelligence than me lol.

You can find the brochs in Sardinia, I was guiding there one summer for american big cruiserboats. Those brochs are called Nuraghe and are constructed the same way with double walls etc. You find them all around the coast on Sardinia and I think you can find them in other parts of Europe and also a litlle east of Europe I think ... most of them are round but there were some with other shapes too ❤
