How we make biltong without BS ingredients

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

See how we make biltong from start to finish! (and how it differs from jerky.)
Most meat snacks contain sugars or preservatives. To us "Keeping It Real" means no bulls#&t ingredients!
This is our self-talk when we’re making food choices but it is also our motto for a good life.

    Whether consumed on horseback during a busy cattle drive or packed in school lunches, Biltong is definitely our go-to. Our son Bill's full proper name is Biltong for the purpose of legally binding contracts and official government documents. Our grandson is Biltong The Second, but never Junior out of respect for the grand nature of this wonderful product.

    Congrats! This looks like better packaged biltong than we find in South Africa where biltong comes from. There are a few local packaged brands like BullBrand, Takkis, all the chain storer have their own etc, but they are terrible. It's not even qualifying as biltong. That said, we can walk into any butcher and ask for fresh biltong the way you like it. wet, medium, dry.. which ever. But well done for 'n proper packaged product.

    What is the shelf life how long can you store your biltong ?

  • @barbellfoods

    @barbellfoods

    7 ай бұрын

    Thanks for reaching out about this! It's a 12-month shelf life on all our meat snacks when unopened and stored somewhere cool & dry (e.g pantry). The shelf life can also be extended indefinitely if the bags are frozen. Once opened, we recommending consuming within 14 days. If you want to keep a bag opened for longer than this, we recommend storing it in the fridge. Or if you prefer to keep opened bags in the pantry for long periods of time, we'd advise storing the product in brown paper bags so it can 'breathe'. The brown paper will slowly absorb moisture from the meat and dries the product out a little further, which will actually help preserve it. You can read more here if interested: www.barbellfoods.com.au/pages/storing-your-biltong Thanks again for reaching out about this ✊ All the best, Ash

  • @barbellfoods

    @barbellfoods

    4 ай бұрын

    Hey Stephen, I appreciate your feedback and I understand your concerns about the price point. The reason biltong is more expensive per gram than regular meat is because during the air-drying process, the steaks reduce in size to less than half their weight, meaning that 1kg of biltong is equivalent to roughly 2kg-2.5kg of raw steak. This essentially means that biltong is a very dense steak, with all the same nutritional value. We have also made the decision to prioritize quality in the ingredients we use to make our biltong, therefore, we only use the highest-quality, organic meat from Australia's best free-range farms, which is simply more costly than if we were to use lower quality beef. Regardless, I understand that the price point may not be for everyone so I appreciate your feedback. We simply believe that the juice is worth the squeeze when it comes to buying high-quality biltong. Thanks again for your kind words and support All the best, Mehnsaik

    Did you know there is only one person in the whole world that has a degree in how to make biltong. A masters degree and her name is Maxine Jones and she got it at the university of Stellenbosch. What an achievement. Maybe you should invite her over to show you guys the science behind biltong making. The boere way.

We weren't meaning to imply that we air-dry our biltong with no machinery/equipment, so I apologise if this created some confusion. We were simply trying to point out that biltong only requires airflow, humidity and time in order to dry out. I hope that clears things up, and thanks again for reaching out ✊ All the best, Ash

    Unfortunately most countries have strict laws on the importing of meat. When you going from SA to holland you cannot bring biltong because it is seen as a raw meat product from outside the EU. Think most countries have similar laws.

    I have had them and not worth the price. I basically bought them based off this ad, however i found them chewy and not as advertised which makes sense as it is silverside which is one of the chewiest/cheapest cuts of meat if not boiled. The cut had far too much fat and sinue which is suprising based off the ad but anyways keep working at it guys

    Hey Lachy, sorry it was not to your liking mate but I appreciate you giving it a go. Silverside is a traditional cut that's used to make biltong because it's got a nice layer of fat running along it. If you're used to jerky, this might not be your thing as jerky is very lean. Having said that, I understand that our biltong is not for everyone. If you send us an email to hello@barbellfoods.com.au, we'll refund your order for you. Apprecaite you giving it a go mate. Hey Nick, The general consensus on grain fed beef i totally see your perspective on, but we choose to use the highest quality we can, so this is indeed one of the best qualities of beef around. We source from our beef supplier Arcadian, their beef is both grass-fed & finished and certified organic. We chose to highlight the grass-fed claim over the organic claim on the bag as it is possible to have beef that is organic but grain fed. Hope this helps to show why we believe our beef is top notch! All the best, Mehnsaik

    It's a pretty good price considering how damn good this biltong is 😋 In all seriousness, thanks for reaching out Winston and I appreciate your concern. I understand that biltong is typically quite an expensive product which may deter some from purchasing it. However, we prioritize quality in our biltong - we only use the highest-quality, organic, grass-fed and finished beef from Australia's best free-range farms, which is some of the best quality meat in the world. We also add no sugars or preservatives to our biltong, so there's no BS ingredients - just beef, vinegar and spices. There's also the added convenience of having the biltong pre-packaged and not having to make it yourself - cause time equals money 😉 Regardless, I appreciate you reaching out and voicing your opinion and I understand where you're coming from. We simply believe that the juice is worth the squeeze when it comes to getting high quality biltong. All the best, Ash
