I was so fortunate to live in a Spanish speaking country (Puerto Rico...yes it is part of the US), in my young twenties that it changed me completely as a human being and I will be forever grateful. Yes my Spanish became fluent, I learned to really admire other countries , foods musics, and of course the people and another way of thinking. I like the other persons comment that travel changes You more inside than different landscapes, food. Living abroad makes you a Global Citizen who can see our World as a blessing not some political party against another political party. I am older now and have traveled extensively aroung the World, but not planning on stopping there is so much to learn, see, and revisit. Still owe you that 50th birthday drink...God bless

That is so true! I have family from PR and love travelling there to see them. Spanish has been a journey for both of us for sure, but the fact that we're making the effort and have the desire makes all the difference. The world is so full of beautiful cultures & languages - Getting outside of your "bubble" is the fastest way to grow, IMO... KJ

This was a great video! I'm glad that you spelled out these things the way that you did, it is all normal and I'm sure there are lots of things that you both had to get used to that didn't make this list. Congrats on your "Most Improved" trophy, Craig! Question, are you having issues with water there? I have been reading that water is becoming an issue worldwide to some extent and within Mexico there are many states currently experiencing major growth and water supplies are dwindling.

It has always interested me to compare other people's experiences in moving to Mexico with my own, although some of the differences are so great that comparisons become irrelevant. For one, I was 26 when I left the U.S. and, well, you guys ... aren't. And talk about "that was then; this is now": I arrived in 1978. Yes, 46 years ago (I'll turn 72 in four months). The differences between Mexico and the U.S., especially in terms of creature comforts, was enormous back then. The only U.S. food chain that existed in the Mexico of 1978 was KFC, and at that, only in large cities. (McDonald's didn't arrive until the mid-1980s). You could search high and low and you would NEVER find commercial brands of cat food, for instance. NAFTA changed a lot of that. And in recent years, Amazon and home delivery! But in 1978, I adopted what I now realize was probably the healthiest attitude that I could have had: I always expected the worst and when I found things that were similar or the same (attitudes, especially), that would be cause for great celebration. My level of Spanish was nil. One year of Latin when I was 14 and two years of German formed my entire repertoire in terms of languages other than English. That all changed, from the git-go. I came to Mexico because I'd been hired for a semi-managerial position. So I was thrust into an environment in which I had to learn Spanish ASAP. Fortunately, I did! When I reached 40 in 1992, I felt enough self-confidence to launch into a second career as a Spanish-to-English translator (sometimes English to Spanish, as well). My main area was in writing program notes for CD booklets -- a highly specialized area if ever there was one. I also ended up translating magazine articles for scientific journals and yes, books. I also plunged into translating because I felt enough support from my Mexican friends, who'd always been impressed by my fluency and large, varied vocabulary. I think your take on the adaptation process is good. The constant contact between spouses (when that didn't exist before) would surely take some getting used to, but you seem to be finding a rhythm and pace that works for you in that regard as well.

No problems at all! I would recommend you go back on our channel and look at the video we did last June on the LGBTQIA community here and then in December the video we did on the big LGBTQIA holiday party. There is a drag queen here that hosts alot of fundraising events (Sasha) who is also trans and I have never heard one ill word spoken of her. I also know there are a few trans people here Lakeside and I've never heard of any problems!

Yes, Inn Ajijic has great wifi and you could definitely work from there. Follow the instructions in our video description to get a 20% discount. And it's gay owned by a very good friend of ours!
