How We Ended Up On A Narrowboat In The UK | Quest Vlog #15

We made the decision to move from Australia to the UK quite a while back. This is the story about the journey we took and the lives we lived before we came to the UK and began living on a narrowboat. Warning: awesome shots of the Australian Outback included - you might want to visit after viewing!

    I’m watching from just south of Coffs Harbour and we have been having some awesome storms! But also lots of smoke from a huge bushfire up in the New England National Park, you wouldn’t get that in the UK. Good onya you two, enjoy while you’re young and not tied down.

    Loved this video with the beautiful glimpse of Australia. Oh my, what a fascinating country. In my area of California, USA, from June through September you can count on weather in the high 90’s to as hot as 113 degrees, but it is a dry heat. No snow here but it is only an hours drive away. Looking forward to enjoying your fun, entertaining videos. You are a delightful couple.

So wise to travel now while you are young and can really enjoy all that travel can be. I enjoy your boating series as the canals are so unique. I have seen so much or England's beauty from you as well as other narrow boat owners. The country is so beautiful., all the farms and little villages, I just love it. Looking forward to all that you want to share while moored for the winter. Have a Blessed day.

    THANK YOU ! Very well done indeed. Excellent background history. I didn't realize that your stories would have such a positive impression on me. I hope every day is better than the one before. Funny to see the reactions for a dusting of snow and what we would think is a nice warmer day. LOL. Alaska's year round average temperature is a fraction over 26°F, right now it's -20°F Below Zero. Our snowfall is measured in inches and its been common this year to see six inches at a time. There's so much snow that Moose are walking rigt over our five foot fences that are buried by the snowfall. Love in Christ from Alaska. G.

    Welcome to the UK guys hope it lives up to your expectations......rain is a gimmie...... You probably get this all the time, where's the Aussie twang. Hint now and then in Ryan's voice, but not in Maggie's. I'm moored near Llangollen at the moment, a more pretty canal you couldn't wish for. Nicely complimented by the Shroppie canal, which you need to be on in order to get here. Love your vids so far. Keep them up. And finally, Woof to Pixel.

    Don't forget Australia is a very diverse country geographically -- so some places are green and some red. :) Nice to hear your story -- off to Mooloolaba beach to walk the dog, meet the family for a bbq brekkie at the beach reserve- back home to the aircon and pool, decent mangoes and prawns. Enjoy your rain, ridiculously hot shops and busy roads though won't you - :) 29 degrees here today - just perfect. Actually I do love the UK - love the shops, pubs and yes even the weather when I visit often. But snow == I go to Whistler for that :)

    The Llangollen canal is great but take your time. The pubs in wrenbury, (Dusty Miller or Cotton Arms) Whitchurch, the black bear, Ellesmere, the Black or Red Lion, the Poachers pocket by Chirk, the Corn mill at Llangollen and there is a big flow. It will take 20% longer going to Llangollen than the return. It is so worth it, a bit narrow at some spots so have a walker ahead to clear the way. 👍

    I think somewhere you made a comment about a sister in Australia so I thought there could have been a passing connection with Australia. Well I am glad of the connection. Having lived a third of my life in Brisbane and a third in the outback and a third in the wet tropics I appreciate the variety you have had. Talking about the green, we have plenty here with all the rainforest (and so we should with 90 inches of rain so far this year), but there is something lovely about the soft greens of Britain. I have seen them a few times. Having been born and raised in Australia I am surprised that your accents are so English.

  • @NarrowboatChef

    @NarrowboatChef

    Yes, it is a different kind of green here in the UK. We do miss the varied landscapes in Australia sometimes though! We never had very strong Aussie accents, and after being here for 4 and a half years we’ve picked up a little on the English accent. 😊

    Hi to both, the thing we love most about the UK is the different seasons as each holds its own beauty. You must try winter cruising, it’s been great for us so far. Love Australia too but wouldn’t live there as far too hot. We have visited a few times as our son emigrated there 12 years ago.

    Everyone keeps telling us how great winter cruising is! We are thinking about doing it next winter, we will see... We agree about the changes in seasons too, it’s lovely seeing them change, especially the leaves in autumn. Where abouts in Australia is your son living?

    When we lived in a house Autumn was just the wet season sandwiched between Summer and Winter and to be honest we didn’t take much notice of it as we both worked a lot. However cruising during the Autumn was beautiful and now one of our favourite seasons. Our son initially emigrated to Sydney where he lived for 5 years then when he got married he moved to Brisbane which is where he lives now married to an Australian.

    I live in the desert like you did in Oz, but ours is the Northern Sonora desert and high altitude (1 mile/ 1609 meters). The high desert gets all four seasons over the right times of the year. We get 11" of rain over the average year but we also get 11" of snow in the same year (really about 1.1" of rain is snow). The amazing thing is that I know people who ski in the morning and golf in the afternoon (albeit the golf course is brown) in winter.

    Interesting comments about the weather. I guess its all relative. You were raised in a dry arid part of the world and I just came in from 4 hours of snow blowing snow drifts in my driveway and shoveling over a metre (yard plus) of snow off the roof of my house (sitll have the other half to do tomorrow). So if its rain in the frozen form you pine for Canada is the place for you. Just a few canals, but you may want to trade your narrow boat for a sailboat and cruise our Great Lakes. Keep up the great vlogs

What a great time of your lives...enjoy to the max. I can't imagine what it would be like to have the rain and snow there though...winter here (WAust) is long enough for me, just gone into Spring now and I am really looking forward to the warmer weather..:) Will add though....I didn't like living in the north of WA or Darwin, way too hot for me.

    I experienced my first English thunderstorm in York where there was a little old lady walking up the street telling me there was an awfully dangerous storm coming. I burst out laughing at the pink lightning and apologised to the lady that is nothing like a storm. The storms we get in Queensland with a blinding blue white flash of lightning and thunder that has you jumping 3 feet in the air. She relied "Oh dear that must be awful." I explained how 'strayens love a good bang up storm in the late afternoon to cool things down a touch and we can sleep at night. She exclaimed "That sounds like a horrid place." The town is on the main highway, Adelaide to Melbourne, but is also the junction point for the main road to the region known as The Lomestone Coast (you can Google that too:-), which amongst other things is known as something of a wine region.
