How We Afford Full Time RVing & Traveling - Funding Life On The Road

The #1 concern of people preparing to full time RV has got to be "How can we afford full time RVing?" That same question weighed on our minds as we prepared to live as full time travelers.

We took a large risk when we first hit the road. We had no remote jobs (the favored way to fund full time RVing) and no concrete way to fund our travels. However, while I don't recommend this approach, this was our dream so we dove in head first regardless. We hoped that along the way we would figure out how to afford full time RVing and traveling - and we did!

I am a 69 year old recent widower who's getting ready to hit the road whenever this dang virus lets up. My wife told me to do this before she climbed that high mountain. She said to live the life we couldn't once she got sick. You two are one of my few fav full timers. I have a soft side truck camper I am finishing the last project of off grid solar. If I don't burn down the house, lol. I want to go the desert first thing, then north and eventually into Alaska. This will be my maiden trip, kind risky but why not?!? I am fortunate that I have a decent retirement income. Plus we believed in life insurance that got me debt free and a nice truck, truck camper and the goodies for it. I look forward to seeing your videos, seeing things we had planned to see, and living the full time RV life as long as He lets me.

I just bought a cell phone booster though. I have my tire plug stuff and the skill set. I have a bin full of my tools, hand and power. My 800 watt solar did it all in marvelous form.

A bit of advice to ppl who are learning to rework this whole "life" thing...you're not homeless. Your home is just an efficiency apartment with wheels. Some don't have rest rooms or kitchens but your home is where your heart is. Is your heart in that apart-meant or HOuse? Is your heart a thing? Or is your heart a state of being and awareness? I hope most will say it is the latter. Thx for a new perspective. We need that.

My wife and I fulltime RV and roadschool our children so they can see and learn everything the world has to offer. The one thing we have learned is that home is the place where you feel most comfortable and happy. In our case being together and experiencing the world together is what makes us comfortable and happy. Our home is where we park it.

We have thought about verbally plugging Patreon at the end of videos, and we probably will eventually. I once heard a story: a fisherman in a small village in the Caribbean was catching 15bfish a day. A businessman on vacation bought some fish from him each day. At the end of the week, the vacationer handed the fisherman a busines plan. In it was how to Become a millionaire with a fishing business. The fisherman read it and then asked, "Senor, after i do all this, what then?" The bigshot said, well, you can come to some remote Caribbean island, buy you a small shack by the water and fish all day! Oops! Love you guys and God bless.

Thank you Jan that means a lot! Every site we stay at we make a campsite review video for, and to find where that site is using GPS coordinates simply type those exact coordinates into Google Maps search and it will zoom right in on that spot and allow you to get directions. Also, on the blog post on our website for those videos, Jenni always creates an interactive map at the bottom of the post of the area we stayed in. The pinpoints on the map have an option to click "get directions" when you click the pinpoint and it will create a box just below the map to type in your address for turn by turn directions. If you need more help just email us at ourfateunbound@gmail.com and we can help further! And Sweetie loves you too, she hasn't even met you yet but I guarantee she loves you! ska punk OI! Hi! I'm new here today, but have been on YT as a viewer for a few years and have followed a few folks from the beginning towards completing a timber-framed home, through the four new Star Wars films, and several other interests. Some people will want to help supplement the revenues that came from advertisements on the channel or during the channel’s playing time. Most of us expect that they are free to do without getting permission from the rest of us. As this channel grows, David and Jenny will earn more from advertising. This is how YT structures the opportunity. So, your pejorative description of "begging" is not accurate when some people want to do this and they are simply directing these individuals to the location of the Patreon button. Initially, there was no mechanism for this to occur in the early days of YT, some bright wo/man thought of "Patreon" as a means of Direct Support that would be freely made donation same in the manner of giving to charities. The KZread channel generally begins as a hobby and eventually develops a business aspect. Whenever funds are generated count as profit that must be report to the US government by its citizens, there will not be a tax deduction for a donor, but there may be for the creator due to the initial and/or ongoing business investments: cameras, lens, editing and sound equipment, rent for location, fuel for the truck pulling the RV, etc. Sorry, David and Jenny, but I doubt your PB sandwiches would be deductible even if you passionately argue that they are an "essential cost-of-doing business." Lighten Up and Live Longer, ska punk OI!! Enjoy the Day. Have a Nice Life. : )

We wonder if after we've been full time RVing in the US for some time if we will want to head overseas, or if life will take us in some other crazy direction. Who knows? The plan is just to stay flexible so we are open to anything! We love this lifestyle though and know we'll be RVing for a long time.

I am taking copious notes and plan on watching them all and reviewing your website as well. Love watching your videos. Our Target date is 5/1/19 & like you, we'll be almost exclusively boondocking. We'll be traveling with our 3 cats & the only thing that makes me nervous is leaving them alone in the middle of nowhere if someone does break in. However, it really does seem like a non-issue from what you & others have said. Excited to get the adventure underway, 384 days... 😊

We also do worry about the possibility of someone breaking in with our animals inside, but we feel that you can't live in fear and you gotta live your life. The same thing could happen at a home, someone breaks in a leaves the door open and the cats get out. Not to scare you or anything haha! I love that you've got a countdown going, we did the same thing and had that number staring us in the face every day haha. Best of luck to you =)

Do you do anything to make it harder for someone to drive off with your RV? Also, if it's not too personal, I'd be interested in what your average monthly costs are. I'll have some income, but it's not as much as when I worked full-time. Thank you!

I think folks would be better off asking themselves 'what am I willing to give up in order to afford to full time' rather than simply asking 'how can I afford it?" Cause you can spend a few thousand dollars a year boondocking with a tiny used van and eating simple meals. Or you can spend a hundred grand a year hopping from park to park in a full size coach, eating at all the nice places, and doing all the fun stuff. It all depends what you want your full time lifestyle to look like.

  • @FateUnbound

We completely agree with you Colin. We gave a lot of things up in order to full time RV, but they were just that, things. We traded possessions for incredible experiences and I'll make that trade any day! And you're right, it definitely depends on what people want out of their full time lifestyle which will determine how much they spend. For us, we just want to live free and simply.

My hat is off to you two, living your dreams at a young age. Becoming debt free is a major accomplishment, and is to be saluted! For me, having had that dream, but unrealized, I now wait until retirement to do what I have dreamed of doing all my life. Traveling, debt free, off grid living. Just 1.5 years to go and I will be there. My plan is to live on less than 2000 per month. I have a bigger RV than you guys and maintenance costs are considerably higher, but doable. When it gets boring I will sell the RV and buy a sailboat and go west or something.

Just here at my home, we have a lot of yard work that needs doing. We're baby boomers and I have a feeling that other Boomers also need a little help too. This year, I started thinking to live in RV and go around places in different States to where I could have meaningful conversation with kindred people on the essential aspects of life to amplify with what I have investigated, learned and practiced through experiences i.e. research & self education and in doing & feeling the good vibrations & receiving the manifestations physically, mentally, emotionally, & spiritually. I believe, life in its complexity as you see its specific aspects and viewing it in simplicity of its whole scenario in its huge perspective is actually so simple & joyful once you have known the root and purpose of creation where it is only “living a life aligned to simplicity, modesty, nobility, etc. where there is less resistance or most of the time no resistance being free from the limitations and worldly attachments that causes conflict to the desire of the inner self which is contentment & happiness in everything - a heavenly state of mind we can all practice and become a good habit where the heart and mind are in harmony which each other. And, once the secret is known... it is no more a secret but in its unfoldment to the inner eye. Being in this physical or material world is a reality wherein we see the physical realities. However, when we view its spiritual essence, the realities the physical eye see are only born to this physical world and they become meaningful only when we see things in the light of the good spirit “as darkness is the absence of light” and the “bad is the absence of good” in this way of accepting things as they then we share life of its necessities in a fun & loving way and as the source of joys being enriched with the bounties & blessings of the Holy Spirit overshadowing all in Its One Endless Progressive flow affecting us all through its revitalizing & inspiring energies - all about pure love or unconditional, humility to the One Creator by the endless knowing/learning/ & understanding ... aiming working towards the Celestial Enterprise we all are embodied and blessed since birth to the worlds beyond! RV living is my plan and next move hopefully, after I came back to USA from a few months visit to my hometown, Philippines. I am glad to have these videos online and connecting with you guys...
