How Water Injection Systems Can Create More Horsepower?

Water is injected as a fine spray into the intake manifold plenum chamber where it evaporates, significantly lowering the temperature of the intake air. This reduces the final compression temperature in the combustion chamber, which also reduces the risk of knock, allowing the turbocharged engine to operate with higher boost pressure and earlier spark timing. The result is increased power and torque, and a substantial improvement in efficiency. Despite the extra power output, thermal stress on all performance-related components is reduced. All of these features ultimately help to diminish wear and prolong engine life. The benefits of water injection can be utilised in various ways, depending on engine and vehicle type. In particular the engineers have considerable latitude when deciding how to balance their priorities between increased power and fuel efficiency. If water injection is taken into account in the design of a high-performance engine right from the start, it is possible to use turbochargers with a higher boost ratio and compression ratio. Water injection provides a particularly effective way of raising the knock threshold in this range, allowing the compression ratio to be increased. This makes it possible to optimise the power output of the turbocharged engine over a wide operating range.

    Lot of group b turbo rally cars used the same system to keep the engine from exploding. Audi Quattro used this I think also fuel injection from Bosch

    Yes, the power is gained from denser intake charge, cooler, and the increased timing that this will allow. Methanol and water injection is commonly used so that increased timing can then be run. If you don’t dynamically set the timing with water injection it can be really bad if you run out of water.

    I must see things differently. Water injection doesn't cool the intake charge. The cooling only occurs once the compression stroke starts. Just before ignition, cylinder temps are above 400C°, at which point the water has absorbed heat and turned to steam. When ignition occurs, the steam continues to absorb heat and expands at a rate greater than the accompanied air. This expansion boosts the force on the piston, increasing torque and keeps peak temperatures under 1100C° at which point Nitrogen will "burn" and create NOx emissions. If the engine is over rich, particulate count (soot, or carbon) skyrockets. It's not as simple as hosing down the intake with water and reeping the benefits. The engine has to be built for the purpose. Nitrous Oxide engines are a good example. Same for Alcohol, or NitroMethane. Build the engine knowing what it will run on, and it will take full advantage of the fuel.

    Geee How novel !! Germany developed (MW50) water methanol injection to allow High boosts in 1942 !! What day of the week is it for you.. Mate ??

    I use dehumidifier water. Or even distilled water is less than a dollar per gallon.
