Well, he has a point. A well connected federation captain was on the Borg ship. And that captain had recently removed some admirals because of "a brain controlling pimple" on the back of their neck. Now his pick of other captains were taken out too. I mean, come on.

No you missed one of the more important establishing events of episode 3. Boimler thrives under the high pressure over-reach of the command decision to stop buffer time. It reveals one of the core aspects of his competencies and shows that his apparent incompetence is self sabotage through doubt and fear which is eliminated when he doesn't need to stop and think about it. He just gets on with his day and is very nearly the only crew member who is able to work under those conditions.

That's the thing people keep missing about Boimler, he is an INCREDIBLY gifted officer, but he's young and fresh from the academy and so full of self doubt that he can't reach his full potential. Nobody will be better at helping an officer with that than Will Riker, so I hope the next season has more moments where Boimler shines.

Shax's death HAS too be an apology/homage to his Enterprise counterpart, Tasha Yar. Her death was meaningless, yet his death was at the opposite end of the spectrum, being on par with Data's sacrifice. Also, can you imagine Cardassians actually controlling him? Can you imagine a covert terrorist cell trying to keep him under control? Where could he possibly have been during the occupation?

My view os that this season was way more consistent than any other. There were great episodes, there were good episodes, but not bad ones. Even though I agree with you that DS9 is overall the best Trek show, its first season was uneven, with some great episodes and some bad ones. That makes, in my opinion, that Lower Decks got the best first season of the franchise. The writers knew what they were doing from the very first scene of the pilot to the very last scene of the finale. AND I WANT A TITAN SHOW! Rikers in space!

Watching my kids laugh at Lower Decks put the entire new batch of Star Trek shows into context for me. For years they were reluctant viewers of TNG and DS9 reruns, but it often felt like dragging them to church. They lit up and felt like they paid their dues when jokes landed. I loved it, and liked the characters, but none of them had quite the x-factor that a few DISCO characters do for me. But they came together much better, and has much better plots and more consistent characterizations. Pretty much perfect on a technical level, but still lacking a bit of special sauce for me that’ll make me love the characters as much as I do those from almost every previous Trek (except maybe ENT, which, while great, also has slightly flat characters). Honestly, this isn’t even a criticism, I like the characters more than I have on the first season of any show, so I’m sure they’ll get there soon.

I dunno, I loved Lower Decks, I honestly think it might be my favorite Trek series - not because I think it's objectively better, but just because the comedic take on this universe really appeals to me personally. I also think Mariner is a really good character and trying to piece together why she's like this from what we get from the show paints an interesting picture. Essentially - she's a burnt out Wesley Crusher. She was the smart, competent Starfleet kid who grew up on Starships, excelled in the Academy - and then got dropped into the Dominion War where her being competent meant she ended up seeing some shit. And then comes out on the other side realizing that being noticed and climbing the ranks means seeing more shit and being beholden to more rules, which she has probably seen firsthand prevent the Federation from doing actual good. I feel like the show has a lot of places left to go with her as a character but what we have so far is interesting.

It's actually not just a nod to the general category of imaginary-girlfriend joke, but a specific reference to the _Avenue Q_ (the musical) storyline where Rod (the character who bears a non-coincidental resemblance to Bert of _Sesame Street_ fame) sings a song called "My Girlfriend, Who Lives in Canada" -- which Rod made up about his 'girlfriend' as 'proof' he wasn't gay. The imaginary girlfriend is named Alberta and "lives in Vancouver" in the song. Either that or the ship being named the Vancouver is one helluva coincidence. 😉

I really like Lower Decks. Your criticisms are perfectly valid, especially about the Fan Service, but that is actually one of the things I loved. Honestly, this felt like it was written by Star Trek fans, or least people who know and perhaps love Trek as much as any fan. It referenced literally every other series and movie in some form or another, and I'm pretty sure Ep 10 referenced everything in some way or another. And Ep 1, Second Contact being a 'rip-off' both in name and plot of the film First Contact, it made me giggle all the way through. And yet it never felt like it was pandering to me. And throughout the whole series, they still wrote interesting stories for interesting characters. Most importantly, it was FUN! When each episode finished, I found myself smiling and having been reminded of why I love this franchise. I hate the phrase "Love letter to the Franchise", usually because it's total BS and used as an excuse for bad writing, but honestly, I can't think of a better phrase to sum up Lower Decks. I would still say DS9 has the best first season, TOS a respectable 2nd, but this was a strong first season. The only caveat is they only had to write ten episodes, not the 20-odd the major series' like DS9, TNG, VOY etc have to reach. It's definitely worthy of being part of the franchise. The other thing I respected is the ending. If it had only got 1 season, there is an end, a conclusion, ie Boimler getting his promotion, Mariner getting to stay where she wants to be. BUT they didn't tie everything off so tightly they have to retcon it to pieces to get more out of it. It's amazing how many shows and films, even big budget ones, can't pull this off.

As a lover of Discovery and Picard, I love Lower Decks because it is set during the Golden Age of Star Trek - the 2360's to 2390's where the uniforms looked rad, the ships radder and it was fleshed out by TNG, DS9 and VOY. I never realised it but in Discovery and Picard, I miss the episode title appearing in the top left corner like it was in my first Trek, TNG. Tawny said as much when she first watched Lower Decks on the Star Trek Day event xD As someone who loves this part of the Star Trek timeline, it is nice to see it fleshed out, with colour coded ships - yellow being engineering, blue science and red being the command hero ships. It is just...comforting to me.

14:19, In terms of characterization, having Mariner duel a simulation of herself that is an idealized version of her, loyal to her crew and willing to sacrifice herself for them is an interesting reversal of how the usual “me vs me” or “inner demon” style battles go. Mariner in her ego and frustration and desire for external validation being the literal villain in her own story outsmarted by a better version of herself that makes her see how much she cares about her friends and family despite her arrogance was pretty innovative,

I'm halfway through Season 3 of Lower Decks. I mainly watch it when I feel a bit of a need for some Trek, but I don't have the time for a full episode or because I need something a bit lighter. Everything since TNG has gotten darker and darker, and Lower Decks is a nice alternative. After the penultimate episode of Strange New Worlds, which was the most horror-driven episode in Star Trek history, IMO, it was nice to be able to watch a LD episode before going to bed. Kind of like having a bowl of ice cream after downing a plate of ghost pepper fajitas.

@Darkcloudalpha there’s a few Wil Wheaton interviews with Mike McMahon about how much different Riker is, when not following Picard and doing his own thing, the paradise he’s in with Deanna at his side. The Ready Room interviews are a huge Wil geekfest, and if you can get over that, these are good interviews if not too short. I haven’t heard the podcasts yet (something I now need to find) but Mike’s Ready Room interviews tell how like in Picard, they want these cameos to have a reason for being there. that medical ep with Boimler’s transporter accident would have been a candidate for Crusher’s USS Pasteur but I think they wanted to have a more evil-like Captain

I agree with your sentiment that the show is at its best when the humor is more subtle, especially with regard to Trek references. The long and overdrawn flyby of the ship that was an homage to TMP was great (one of those things that made me laugh when I realized what they were doing, then roll my eyes when it went on too long, then came back around to making me laugh again). The constant throwaway references to other Trek shows, though, I could mostly do without. Also, I'm calling it now, Shaxs will be replaced at tactical next season by a Klingon, possibly Worf specifically, considering Michael Dorn's fairly extensive history of voice work.

Omg that last episode was awesome, for all the reasons you mentioned. The ending was a great callback to MCU final credits. Fun Fact: Kevin Feige was inspired by Star Trek: TNG series finale "All Good Things" for the basic plot of Avengers: Endgame, which is why the Quantum Tunnel suits had the Avengers symbol where a communicator pin would be. Lower Decks in return did the same signature in credits as a return nod. Which could also signal that Bolimer will not be back (or recurring at least) & the 1st season was the "Infinity Saga" for Lower Decks. 🛰🚀🛸

DS9 had a really rocky first season, with the highest of highs in Duet, and the lowest of lows in Move Along Home. Lower Decks' first season by comparison is far more consistent in quality, far more confident in it's writing. There is an argument to be made that TOS' first season is better, but that was 60 years ago and TV was very different. At the very least of the 3 current modern Trek series Lower Decks easily had the best first season

I was initially confused, not remembering what it was referring to, until I was reminded of just how many times Janeway's solution was just to fly straight through whatever the obstacle was, as fast as she could.
