How was it made? Peony Brooch | Cindy Chao | V&A
Discover how jewellery designer Cindy Chao made her spectacular three-dimensional brooch in the shape of a peony flower. Set with an incredible 3,150 rubies, the dazzling brooch required meticulous engineering to ensure each gem would fit within the delicate construction.
In this film, Chao reveals her ten-year-long creative process, the origin of the idea and how it transformed from sketch to glistening, velvety brooch.

10 years??? Now that's letting the artist be an artist! Breathtakingly beautiful.

@@johnsmith1474 It's far from gaudy. Flamboyant but refined is more like it. But hey, continue being salty and pressed lmao
What a master!!! The rubies first caught my eye, but then, the gold that was matched precisely to the yellow diamonds, and then how she made the gold of the pollen look like it’s real, like if I touch it, I’d get pollen in my fingers… and how the big rubies and the small stones interact with each other on the purple titanium so they both get to shine…. Omg. 😍
I am so glad I found this channel! So many beautiful objects I would never be able to see, otherwise. Thank you!
Don't think I've ever seen purple titanium before. What an absolutely stunning piece

Titanium is a metal (niobium as well) that can be oxidized using electric current to take on different colors. Look up the process, it is fascinating.

This is an incredible work of art! Breathtaking!!! 🇨🇦
Heart stopping beauty. A joy to have eyes today.
I see this artisan work at local boutiques in my old neighborhood. I was fascinated by her work and the details she put into it. I live in California and hope to come across this type of artisan work again. 💚💙💜👍💯
It's a beautiful work of art in the screen of the computer, but I bet that in real life is even more .
My heart almost stopped. What a beautiful creation.
The color of this, red and purple, is so striking. The movement is beautiful. What a touching story behind it as well!
Wow ❤ stunning piece and beautiful story
That woman was lucky to still be alive after ten years, to receive it!! Beautiful brooch. Magnificent indeed!!!
This is one of the most beautiful pieces I have seen. This artist is a genius jeweler.
What a beauty. I love peonies and buy them when they're available - they look beautiful both in a vase with stems and in a glass bowl of water with just the head of the flowers, but I would never be comfortable to wear a piece like this. Just imagine if I lost it or a ruby fell off .
A beautiful story behind an astonishing piece of art
Wow! This is the most beautiful piece of jewelry art I've ever seen by far. Oh how I'd love to see it in person. It's magical.
Beautiful broach. Beautiful story.
Marvellous...unique and mesmerising...

Exquisite.
WOW !!!
WOW !!!!!!!! WOW !!!!!!

i wish we had heard more about her grandfather and father and their work.
Wow
She designed it and made the original wax for casting into titanium. What I’m wondering is did she set the stones did she do the actual cast? Were there other people involved in this process, if so who. An amazing piece of artistry. If she did this all by herself, man that’s stunning.

She carves all of her pieces, rather uses a hand-sculpted wax mold that allows her to design freely. I would imagine she works with a group of setters and a caster.
The many shades of love. Like going into a church.

A modern day Faberge. Otherworldly Beauty.
As a work of ingenuity and craftsmanship, this brooch is extraordinary. As a work of art, it is horrendous.

@@zidre906 I spent many years reflecting on this subject (I also wrote a lot about what art is) and no, art is not a reflection of what people go through. Of course, you are perfectly free to think art is what you like best - a therapy, an emotional outburst, an image of society, a commodity, a luxury good, a superfluous activity or whatever.

It appears that the rest of us in the comments would disagree with you. Personally, I think the brooch is absolutely stunning - and that's just my opinion ofc. Maybe you should also remember that art is subjective.
It's gorgeous but looks nothing like a peony to me.

Good for her that she had the means to flourish. The real shame is that we'll never know the artists that don't get those opportunities.

That's your takeaway from this whole video? I wonder why it reeks of jealously and shallowness...
Why would you put that many valuable gemstones on a base metal as worthless as titanium? 🤦🏽♀
@ssc6386
2 жыл бұрын
The designer stated that titanium was selected for its strength and lightweight qualities. They were also able to oxidize the titanium to take on the purple colour, without which would have left the base more plain. Did you even watch the video? Smh

Not to be rude to the beautiful design, but thousands of people worked underpaid, so that someone else can buy piece like that. Are all the rubies worth the time taken away from loved ones. No.
