How Virgil Abloh Saved My Fashion Career
RIP Virgil Abloh (1980 - 2021). He will truly be missed. Abloh was a true multi-hyphenate -- first, and foremost a fashion designer, who before making history as Louis Vuitton's first Black artistic director, founded the cult streetwear label Off-White.

It’s certainly hard to pick out one moment, but I will have to say the release of his Pyrex clothes. I wanted the black hoodie with the Caravaggio on it and my family bought it for me for Christmas from RSVP gallery. I knew very little about Virgil then, I thought he was just a small collaborator of Ye’s so I wanted the hoodie out of pure influence from Ye. After receiving the hoodie, I decided to look up the guy who had the idea to mix such things as a renaissance painting, sports and street culture a la Pyrex and then name the brand Pyrex. Knowing that someone who looked like me could be so tasteful, without losing sight of own references made me want to try a little harder to elevate myself and stay grounded at the same time. I could say so much more, but this may be enough for now. RIP Virg 🕊

His FW21 collection for LV. Such a great response to the fashion community's question about his capability of being authentic. It's also not easy to incorporate the Black's cultural legacy into a brand like LV, but he did it so successfully in his own way.
After interning at a showroom in NYC and being the only black person in the whole company, I made it my obligation to stick with my guts and bring ppl like myself along the way. Virgil Abloh, a first gen Ghanaian immigrant like myself inspired me to drop out of nursing school and pursue that. I never got to talk to him about it but he made it look like a reality for me and countless immigrant kids stuck in courses they hate to impress their parents. Long live Uncle Virgil 🇬🇭.
In the days after his death it was incredible to see such an outpouring of support for Virgil. Texts, messages & gestures that he consistently did and made to help and elevate others was outstanding. He really changed the landscape of fashion and the whole of ‘creative’ field as well. Made it far more accessible and made kids (like myself) believe they’re able to pursue a career in the arts without having the typical requirements to do so. While he made leaps for the black community in fashion, he also made leaps for every POC and really inspired an ENTIRE generation of kids to go for it. He had a hand it seemed in every facet of creative work. I always wondered how he did it, while simultaneously helping out so many other creatives and also balancing family life. His passing and illness put it’s all into perspective. Every tends to have a goal of ‘changing the world’ in some shape or form. This man can safely say he did that and so much more in such a short period of time. Rest in Power Virgil.
As a black American Man I didn’t see myself in fashion until I saw Virgil and Kerby, and hood by air. it gave me this feeling that I can succeed in fashion someday.

Virgil inspired me to believe that it’s possible, I was so afraid of being criticized because I live in the hood. And telling yo homie that you want to make a women’s line . But seeing the fashion show he did with the jazz playing in the intro of the show. I literally felt like if he can do it, then so can I. Do this for you Virgil..thank you Great and inspiring Vlog🔥🔥🔥🔥
“It’s so crazy how people you don’t even know can motivate you”, and somehow that’s how i feel about you ! Thank you for being one of these people inspiring us and shoring us that fashion is not that inaccessible how it seems. RIP Virgil 🤍
Dropping a line to say a HUGE!!! Thank you for your interviews and inspiration. I am of African descent in my 50s and still reaching for my fashion dream after 30+ years of fashion dawdling. I am now getting to the bones of being a late bloomer to live my dream and your videos are full of inspiration and real use information and insight. From the Midwest Indiana in the U.S. thank you again. You’ll do great things.
I have been enjoying your channel for about 3 years now, possibly longer but I have totally lost track of time…and this is the first time I’ve found the courage to make a comment & to express my gratitude for your work. It’s gratitude for your valuable contribution to modern discourse about not just Fashion but ethics and values in general. I am an Australian (born in Tasmania) & a child of the early 60’s so probably not your usual demographic but I certainly share your passion for the art form of clothing our bodies, it has obsessed me my whole life! Your channel is important in educating my generation who really need to listen to people just like you Odunayo, and the wonderful Virgil Abloh who succinctly with flair, gentleness and kindness can teach us how it REALLY IS… and how things should be… so to end this rather overly long comment… I really appreciate you. 😍❤️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Beautifully stated. He accomplished so much during his short life. More than most accomplish in a lifetime
I totally relate to your insecurities because of a lack of representation. It’s one of the reasons why I didn’t pursue my hearts desire, but I learned to do it anyway: no plan b, you have nothing to lose and go for what you know.
A well put out video. Whilst I may not have been Virgil's biggest fan in terms of his work in fashion, he paved the way for so many young creatives to be working in high positions in the industry. His vision and work rate are second to none and his legacy in bridging streetwear and luxury will forever be remembered.
Virgil was Talented. The saying goes that "Nothing in Art is truly New, ony Talent". Even Rick Owens said "Ramons' are fake Converses'". You can't deny the Talent of people like Virgil, Rick, and even Yohji who has openly said that he copies/gets inspiration from the way clothes were cut, and worn in the post war era. All Talented men.
Thanks for sharing this!
You're inspiring me to keep going with my magazine. Cause fashion is Africa is so undermined and I need Africa to really embrace the fashion industry and to take it seriously. Its an uphill battle but I depend heavily on you for inspiration and content I must admit as well as understanding the industry. So Thank you to you too. 🙏🏾
Great video and thanxs for sharing
Thank Ayo you for sharing this! I think Virgil is also proof that it's ok to not have things all figured out and search and pursue different things in life if that's what you're feeling is gonna make you grow as a person first, not just work-wise.
As a French person, he’s such an inspiring figure for black aspiring artists~
Love your videos!
Can watch your videos over and over again!
I've always been someone who enjoys being a generalist but, naturally, being a specialist is much more viable for breaking into any craft or industry in the world. I suspect that "is Virgil a fashion designer?" is still going to be a contentious question, however, he showed me that it is possible to be a generalist and have that quality be recognised. More importantly, Virgil also showed that one could achieve great things for themselves without neglecting to lift others up as well. That became his greatest contribution to the fashion world which I believe has not been achieved by anyone else ever. He is a testament that "making it" doesn't have to be all competition and trying to be the greatest designer ever whatsoever. If we all share our knowledge and wisdom and help one another, we can all be great together. Because of Virgil, I am now more interested in sharing my thoughts and ideas with people than trying to make a name for myself. And I am glad.

Very insightful commentary, there are extremely creative people with many areas of enthusiasm and gifted with enormous talent but who lack the most important ingredient of self confidence…. Virgil was a gift to those who are paralysed with self doubt, his life is the example to follow…. 💓
Rest in power V, broke doors for so many and inspired generations, pushing culture forward always
Mannnnn some of us have no money, no family connections, just dream + hustle. Seeing Virgil Abloh LITERALLY change the face of fashion was mind-blowing and inspiring. we're so lucky to have lived in the same time as him and I think we'll still keep realising his impact years and years from now
Great video man! RIP a true legend 🙏🏻I just did a video too on all of his album covers.... he was a man of many talents!
We can learn a lot from your experience, thanks for sharing.
Virgil was a huge inspiration for more people than I knew. None of my friends knew who he was. While every singe time I am bored at school I design clothing hugely inspired by his work. His influence will stay with me and I hope a lot of people feel the same.
Great video!
Inspirational!
I got my spark from Virgil as well. As subtle as it was, it helped me out. I just know there’s no one else that made me think outside the box and love fashion. With his help, I was able to step in fully! That’s what makes a difference
Loved watching your careea. 👍🏻🔥
Very nice video!
This content is fantastic
I love this thank u
I remember asking you in the Worldwide discord server some years ago if you were looking for working in the fashion industry and you replied to me saying that's something was not gonna happen because you were studying that engineering degree. At that moment I thought that was the only reason which kept you away of working in the fashion industry. Unfortunately I see one of the main problems was having to deal with the classicism/racism of the fashion industry. So I'm glad Virgil was a successful designer, he opened a door in this industry to people like you, Samuel Ross and all the people from the black community. Definitely the best contribution of Virgil was making fashion more inclusive.
Nice one!
Rip Virgil legend never die they live on through other creators
I can’t get over how Virgil changed the world in such a short time. All for the better.

Wo
I get the representation thing, as a brown person myself, I hardly see other poc like me represented in the industry, what I don't believe is Virgil did meaningful things with his designs, he was just starting to do studies on african cultures and dressing when he passed away, what he had been doing is what Matthew Williams is doing at Givenchy, taking from other creatives and stamping the LV/Givenchy monogram on t shirts and neoprene, yes fashion is cyclical and repetitive, but not blatant reproductions, we can't apologize sub par work for the sake of representation when there's other creatives doing more disruptive things like Telfar, Area or Rogers, god, Stephen Burrows has been doing it for ages now and not receiving the praise he deserves; Wat I do think is if Virgil had gone to a brand with more of an heritage on menswear: he would've thrived, Louis Vuitton clothing archive is so new, with really no codes to work with that left him only with his ideas, which to me, didn't translated well, if he had gone to, let's say Loro Piana, Brioni or Berluti, with a strong heritage on menswear codes. I also like to say he had pieces and looks that were great, but most of his collections were misses, and one can see that reflected in Off-white, just hype pieces that in the end had no actual proposition. To me it's sad he passed away and suffered that illness in silence when he was just starting to find his voice, that fw 2021 collection had some highlights...

Ayo u can be anything u want if you believe but life is short so you don't get much time to enjoy your success. I've given up on getting my dream career coz I'm exhausted trying and everything I try I always fail. I'm just not a lucky person. I'm just gonna try and earn enough money to be comfortable and have a couple hoIidays a year. I don't even think fashion is important enough to me any more I'm nearly 30 and middle age after that before I know it I'll be an old man. I buy nice garms for who? nobody notices I get no compliments from girls or gain extra friends from designer items I buy I just lose too much money so what's the point? If we can just die out the blue accidentally or what not does it really matter wot we wear? Poor virgil knew he was sick so I guess that pushed him to be the best he could be coz he must have known he may not have much time to leave a mark on the world if its for the greater of black men but if u notice how he dressed it was never flamboyant or expensive fits just sweatpants and sweater or hoodie. If ppl want to judge me on wot I wear then that's a failure on their part. I'm just gonna be a free spirit from now on and not get hung up on the latest trends and looks. Virgil said that streetwear won't be around for much longer. I think the way the world is going ppl are gonna be less bothered about haute couture. Yes I have quite alot of designer pieces right now but I'm not buying any more again because A) the prices are outrageously crazy now e.g I paid £600 for balenciaga speed trainers I could use that money to live better B) the first thing ppl see is my skin colour being black not wot I'm wearing I don't need expensive western world designer shit to look like I'm tryna impress and conform to social medias take on what is trendy. Once all my designer items are worn out I think I'll just wear Nike joggers and hoodies and plain black and white T's. As I'm interested in the physiological side of fashion I'll continue to follow it but I won't buy the items no more.

Thank you for speaking about your experience as a minority Ayo. Just like Virgil, know that what you're doing is also the same. You're already making an impact on many of us by showing us that we have a seat in fashion too. You're the proof that Virgil was successful in his purpose 🤍
