How Van Gogh Used Contrast: More Glowing Colours From Vincent in 'The Chair'!
Vincent van Gogh was a master at using contrast to make his colours glow. In this video we look again at 'The Chair' and I show you how he made use of extension contrast and analogous contrast in a way overlooked by many people.
We review all the other forms of contrast in painting - hue, saturation, value, warm and cool, complementary (many of which Vincent van Gogh also made use of) - and I show you how they do or don't apply to 'The Chair'.
I also relate these back to colour theory for you, and touch on how Vincent's genius laid the foundation for a perhaps unexpected school of painting - 20th century abstract art.
Some of this is quite complex - after all Vincent is one of the greatest painters of all time! - so if you have any questions or observations please drop them into the comments below and I'll do my best to help!
