How Van Gogh Painted 'The Chair': Technique and Time-lapse
In this video I bring together Vincent's colour mixing and masterly control of contrast as I re-create his much-loved painting 'The Chair'.
Using time-lapse photography, I take you through how he lays down flat colour over a dark ground and then builds up impasto paint to create the variety of contrasts that give his paintings that distinctive 'glow'.
We'll also see how he uses drawing in his paintings, and why his choice of colours is so important.
It doesn't all go smoothly - painting is difficult stuff! - but I also show you how to persist and make adjustments to recover from mistakes. As ever, if you have any questions or observations, please drop them in a comment and I'll do my best to answer them.

My husband loves Van Gosh. And thanks to you I painted him The Chair for a Christmas present. I really hope that he will like it....if not I will tell him that it is your fault. Hahaha joke I would never do that. Just want to make you smile cause you are very serious. Merry Christmas!
