How valuable is Angel Reese?

Angel Reese isn't an efficient scorer at all, but she's incredibly important to the Chicago Sky because of her rebounding and defense. Is she the most impactful rookie in the WNBA? Are her ridiculous impact metrics authentic or lacking context?
This video examines her strengths and weaknesses, what coach Weatherspoon's scheme does to impact her stats, and how her skillset could determine what her ceiling is as a pro.

No, she’s a great hustle player and a “dog” on the boards. She really has to get a jumper to become a top player. I heard she shoots with her off hand which is crazy. You would think the coaches in the WNBA could rebuild her jumper but they don’t have the assets or the funding as the NBA so who knows? The thing is, right now teams aren’t making their strategies to stop AR. She’s having a great rookie year but I just don’t think as of now at least, she will ever be a number 1 option

@jaylucas8352 shooting 3 pointers are very hard to do which means it ain't no time to shoot 3s fancy jump shots, when you are trying to score any kind of way you can to help your team be in a winning situation, and without rebounds you won't be able to seal a lead to win as well, rebounds are a factor on how you keep the ball away from your opponent

A lot of people with a shallow understanding of basketball criticize Reese’s game because it’s not flashy and thrilling to watch for them, which is what they think makes a good player, but Reese’s impact is undeniable. She also has the highest overall efficiency rating of any rookie at 19.3, while Clark sits at 16.1. Even if you don’t understand defense which most of these guys speaking on basketball don’t, it’s obvious how much more easily the other team scores when Reese is on the bench versus when she’s in the game. That’s a huge impact.

How many times have you seen that? She dominates games with her will and desire to be great. Just make sure that you mention CC is leading the league in turnover and the woman in second place is about 45 behind. One of the best, honest and fair, visual examinations I've seen about Angel. You acknowledge her value. Cult-like followers refuse to acknowledge this. Reese hasn't had time to rest like all rookies. They went straight to playing after the draft. So none of their games are where they should probably be at this point. Reese is going to be more efficient. These double-doubles are very telling. Definitely a ROTY contender.

Excellent analysis, sir! As someone who "doesn't watch sports...I just watch Angel" I've often mentioned her awkwardness on the court. She simply doesn't possess that smooth flow that most basketball players have in any league to her game. If you look up the words confidence and intentional there's a great chance that you'll see a pic of Angel Reese as without these she doesn't do any of what she's accomplished. Most valuable lesson for all athletes to learn as early as possible!

Nice analysis. Reese has gotten better with cutters. The reasons you pointed out is why she gets those good plus/minus ratings. They can’t be found in the box score. Also, maybe I missed it, but I would also add how teams are forced to account for her offensive rebounding and so keep 3 players in the lane to rebound. This slows their transition game, also, not in the box score.

This content creator is pretty bais. Banging down low always have lower shot ratios! This guy is too young to remeber BBall in 70s 80s or 90s. Shaq would miss a lot of his 1st try shots also, but what was remarkable was his ability to get second, third and even 4th put back attempts. Charles Barkley was the same. But we cannot entirely compare womans BBall to mens. The fact that she is doing this as a woman in the W is far more amazing than men in the NBA. Yes she is undersized, cinsider that she is dominating the W like shaq dominated the NBA! She also missing these shotsvattempting to muscle through most times multiple defenders bodies, thats extremely hard.

Game against Lynx: Double doubles (points/rebounds) don't mean squat for a big in a girl's game. Reese was 4-16 in shooting, so how many cheap rebounds did she get off her 12 missed shots. In addition, most of her 12 misses were off short shots, work on your shot girl! So Reese shoots 16 shots and gets several offensive rebounds near the rim and only scores 8 points off buckets. That is REALLY bad.

She is great rebounder. But she is not the ROY. But, ESPN has already called out AR as the ROY. It is fixed and not legit. I guess the league cares not how the WNBA looks like a joke as a professional league. Unprofessional and not a legit league with honorable standards.

Reese gonna get another L against the Seattle Storm tonight. In addition, Reese will be exposed for what she is and put her in her place by one of the better teams. She is a one dimensional player who gets a lot of meaningless rebounds (offensive rebounds of her own missed layups uncontested defensive rebounds that clearly another Sky player could have rebounded). She is the awkwardly tall person who can't shoot straight and camps out under the basket waiting for a missed shot to simply drop into her awaiting arms. This gal struggles to make 4 baskets a game even though she benefits from the advantage of being taller than most. Work on your shot girl, it needs a lot of work.

If Angel continues to improve offensively the sky is the limit for her. Has potential to be one of the top players in her position and is already the leagues best rebounder. However Reese is currently a one dimensional player whereas Clark, top 20 in virtually every stat (1st 3PM, 3rd Assists, 8th FT%, 15th rebounds, top 20 in steals and blocks), contributes just about everywhere. The negative stats are Reese leading the league in misses from 5 feet in and Clark doing the same in turnovers. Of these the turnovers are more forgivable due to Clark's high usage rate, it being a statistic that some of the greatest NBA players (Lebron, Kobe, Stockton, Luka, Harden) of all time have lead the league in (top 5 in the WNBA this year are either Olympians or will be All Stars). Missing consistently from short range isn't something all-time greats have done. What doesn't have merit is Reese's outstanding rebounding numbers being due to grabbing her own misses. These only account for 2 rebounds a game on average. I love watching both players, but if ended today Clark should win hands down. Both have an incredible future.

A one dimensional player does not set wnba double-double records, especially as a rookie. As coaching great Pat Riley says, no rebounds, no rings. So it looks like you're trying to minimize just how great her skills and feats are by bringing up CC stats, which are not comparable since they play different positions. Noticed how you conveniently left out how CC is leading the league in turnovers,, on pace to beat the dubious single season turnovers record.
