    I have dwarfism, and I'm not sure when I figured it out, but I heard an adult tell someone else at a very young age to memorize the length of their fingers, hand, forearm, foot, and shoulders--and to use them as measuring tools. It was probably my grandfather who is a mechanic. I somehow put two and two together, and realized that, since I don't change size like my peers, I could start doing that right away. I've measured stuff with the side of my hand or my whole forearm to my pinky for the last 20+ years--11cm and 23cm. I also know exactly how wide my wheelchair is and can judge the width of a gap from literally 150ft away as long as I am facing it. To where if I am not in my chair I can feel the sense leaving me. First time I saw Adam's tattoo I've wanted to get the same thing.

    the typical trick in photography if you want to show scale is to include in the frame something of a wellknown size as reference for example I found this huge mushroom while I was mountain biking so I made sure that my bike wheel was in the shot for reference... that's right, this mushroom was about as wide as my bike wheel & maybe about ⅔ the height. the largest fungus fruit I've seen outside of puff balls. I added it on iNaturalist if you look up "Laetiporus". My wheel including the tire has an effective length of 29 in|73.66cm

    This makes so much sense to me. Often when I'm running a design through my head, I'll pull out a ruler or tape measure, just to check what a certain distance looks like, so I can understand how a particular size will relate to the context the product might be used in. Our living situation changed a year ago, and it's currently hard for me to keep a ruler close enough to just grab whenever I feel like, and the inconvenience of having to take the extra effort is very noticeable. Even before that though, I would sometimes find myself just grabbing a ruler and a notebook on the way out the door, going to the store or other places, if I was in a creative mood, so I would have it available. A tattoo is a very logical solution to this!

  • @Frank_D14

    It's interesting that your most surprising use of the tattoo is the ideation measurements. The ideation use is exactly what makes me want a tattoo like yours. Was it easy to find a tattoo artist willing to follow all of the parameters given? What was your inspiration for it? Was there a chosen template you've referenced and took it to the letter?; or was it customized, either by you or the artist, to fit the functionality aiming towards precision? Back in, well, last millenium when we went for a school trip to England they were showing "First Blood" on the theatre on the ship. At the end when Rambo is talking about what happened to his friend, we could not get his slur. So we watched the movie over and over during the trip and each time we bough a bag with 1 kg wine gums. I wouldn’t worry to much about stretching and warping and loosening, but I would leave off the numbers. Tattoos inevitably get a little blurry over time, and tiny letters or numbers will turn into blotchy marks. We can all count to six. I also think the blocky design is a good idea - not just for counting, but also because a solid block of colour will only blur out on the outside, while a thin line will get blurry on both sides. Blocks will look sharper over time. And you should switch to your non-dominant hand for certain tasks. It’ll keep that forearm tight ;-)

    I actually had a course in college about engineering math. And it was all about estimating and approximating. So when you see a number on a plan, you can look at that number, and say that number makes sense. But if the person making that plan has messed up, you should be able to recognize that that number isn't right. And at that point you can then do the math and find out if it is right or not. Because sometimes your intuition is wrong. But if it isn't, it can save a lot of wasted effort if you can identify an error early on. As an engineer, i use engineering guesstimates all the time. If there is something that makes me question the math, then i have to go and do the math. But if the numbers look acceptable, then i feel comfortable that the numbers are probably correct.

    It’s how I always helped my nieces with their math homework: if you calculate 19 x 22 and land somewhere around 400 (20 x 20), you probably won’t have to double-check and you can move on to the next task. Etc. etc. It’s a way to get more confident as well.

  • @jeromethiel4323

    @jeromethiel4323

    @@mm9773 Exactly. In your example, i would do 20x22, which is 440. But you know that 19 is one less, so that 440 total is actually 22 less, and 22 is less than 40, so the 400 stands. Then it's simple 40-22, so 18. So 19x22 is 418. These simple tricks can make mental math easy, as long as you can keep a few numbers in your head.

    It is genuinely surprising how often I want to get a good grasp on the size of something, even as someone who has no practical reasons to do so, so I keep rulers anywhere I tend to spend time. My main desk (I computer a lot) even has a 24" level beside it for larger measurements. I also keep a calculator beside my bed for the frustration of wanting to know some calculation in that great/annoying creative period when you're trying to fall asleep. Especially useful since you're probably tired or half-asleep there and aren't up for doing even things you'd usually be fine to do in your head. You could use a phone, but those are bright. When I had one of those Alexa type things, I mostly used it to do the same thing, but ultimately got rid of it due to the annoyance of false triggers, and just not finding voice commands to be a way I desire to interact with devices.

Back in the days, when I was a smoker, knowing that a cigarette was exactly 75mm was very useful on a lot of occasions. It allowed me to easily make accurate measuring tape on the spot. One piece of a4 paper gives 6 meters of measuring tape in no time at all. Since I don't smoke anymore, I no longer have that available, but my index finger is almost exactly that length and I don't think the side of my finger is going to shrink or grow very much.

    Loved those "berry" candies as a kid growing up in Chicago. They were only available, but in both "raspberry" and "blackberry", at "Stop and Shop", a specialty grocery store in the Loop. It was a real treat to have my mom take my sister and me downtown, maybe twice a year, to visit the toy department at Marshall Field, have lunch at Italian Village or The Berghoff, and shop for dinner makings (and candy!) at Stop and Shop. We would take the subway back to Logan Square, then catch a cab back to our little old brick bungalow.

    I want to get one on my own arm, as I do a lot of estimates. I am also a trained anthropologist and think it would be helpful in a pitch for reference data, and quick hand. In terms of sizing I am able to tell several different size socket sizes without testing them. I used to work on jeeps with my dad and the jeeps largely use metric while aftermarket uses imperial. I have gotten pretty good at getting my hands dirty and I always love to see someone else who is as passionate without being judgmental when looking at projects.

    I love the bits where adam wanders off camera and it keeps rolling. Lets me partially fulfill my fantasy of nosing around in his shop. Its like Wheres Waldo, but near infinite Waldos hidden amongst a backdrop of cooler, neatly arranged Waldos. I find myself paying more attention to the background in some shots than whats going on in frame and have to rewind amd catch up.

    My head canon is that Adam measures the entire length of his ruler tattoo to see how far off, plus or minus, it is and then adjusts based on that. Water retention, weight gain/loss, muscle gain/loss, however many causes that will change the accuracy of his tattoo. I also like to imagine a scenario where it will be a life or death critical requirement that he has his tattoo. "This (item) must be exactly this measurement or (X) will fail." situation. I am so envious of Adam's ability to know exactly where each and every one of the items in his shop is, to whatever degree of accuracy but I assume it's quite high. My family does not know the pleasure it brings me when I am looking for something and it is exactly where I placed it. They also don't know how triggering it is for me to look for said item and it is not where I left it. I struggle with object permanence and can't afford any medication(if there is such a thing) and when something isn't precisely where I left it it causes me immense frustration. I know there's a chaotic order to your shop Adam but I would just like you to know how content it makes me watching you organize things or create things of incredible beauty from nothing. Watching you have to organize one of your fallen containers of screws or bolts is particularly peaceful to me. Not because of the suffering you go through with the task but that that's the type of thing I am particularly good at and it brings immeasurable joy to me to watch the task be completed.

    As someone who struggled with ADHD for years, this was definitely something I had a very hard time with and medication helped immensely with (coupled with mindful meditation practices). Basically, I'd be constantly so "already on to the next task" and thinking about it closely that the current task (which was not completed, and usually was "putting away the thing I'm about to misplace in a haphazard fashion") wouldn't be fully finished in lieu of the next task. Nowadays, it's still sometimes difficult but usually that brief mindfulness practice of trying to be more present coupled with medication that makes that effort a lot more approachable finally got me to where even if I misplace something, chances are I can very quickly recall where I put it down or where I saw it last.

I'd accept a stroke or heart attack if I could have some peace of mind if only for a short while.

    Actually Adam, in some parts of Germany, where Haribo is originally from, they're also called "Weingummi" which directly translates to "Winegums". Here in the Southern Parts of Germany we just refer to them as simple "Gummy Bears", even if it aren't Bears. But no matter what you call them, the Berries are an excellent choice either way! :D
