How Trump makes extreme things look normal

The scariest part of Trump's first year as president isn't how abnormal he is, it's how normal he makes everything else look by comparison.

“Don’t normalize this” has become a kind of rallying cry during President Trump’s first year in office -- a reminder to not get too acclimated to Trump’s norm-breaking and erratic behavior.
But the real danger of the Trump presidency might have less to do with Trump’s abnormality and more to do with how “normal” he makes other Republicans look by comparison. And the concept of the “Overton Window” helps explain why our politics and media might be warped long after Trump’s presidency comes to an end.

A big part of this problem is cultural. It is the irrational insistence that everybody's opinion caries equal weight. It's the idea that the man-on-the-street's opinion about tax policy is equally valid as an economic professor's. The climate change denier's opinion is equally valid to the opinion of a climate scientist who has 50 years worth of data to back up his claims. Instead of a marketplace of ideas, we have the democratization of ideas. Popular belief has become more important than objective truth. Trump is a distraction (and Reality TV show clown). While he is off tweeting about something unimportant, the general public is being slowly deprived of the things that are vital to this country's long-term success (affordable education, affordable health-care, good job opportunities, low tax burden, upward mobility, proportional representation in government, investment in infrastructure, investment in new technologies, environmental protection, blind justice, ...)

Hell.. about 30 years ago I saw a large triangle-shaped UFO float silently overhead. In retrospect it was almost certainly a stealth bomber in testing (appearing silent merely to the speed of sound causing the engine noise to arrive after it had passed out of view).

From my recent foray into figuring out my political ideals, and remembering this video, I’ve found I would probably be a centrist in my own country, but in America, I would be considered a left wing, even before Trump. The overton window has already moved from various other nation’s ideas of democracy and Trump’s made it worse. The cold war already made you very anti-left. From my perspective, the modern U.S. is equal to the U.S.S.R, not in military power, but from how I see the two countries, oppressive hellholes. There is a meme somewhere that fits this. A Star Wars: Episode III one. “You became the very thing you swore to destroy.” I feel it fits.

Mainstream media outlets like CNN and Vox are staffed by humans with personal biases which can inevitably affect their editorial choices. It affects everyone, both liberal and conservative, but that is NOT "fake news." The stories they report are very real and any reputable media outlet does fact checking to make sure their reporting is based upon the best obtainable facts. When someone tosses around the label "fake news" just because they don't personally like a news story, that is an insult to the journalists involved. That person is essentially accusing them of lying or fraud. Unfortunately, in this day and age, some people seem to see things in black and white and think a story must either be completely true or completely "fake news." They don't seem able to grapple with more subtle questions of how human bias may color or distort how true facts are reported. That's an entirely legitimate consideration when encountering any news story from any source. "Fake news" is the fraudulent invention of a non-existent news story out of thin air. That's the kind of thing that Russian trolls did in an attempt to influence the election.

"Liberals" aren't even left leaning in America. Hillary may as well be a conservative or at most a centrist, and that was both the reason why she won the primary (Bernie seemed extreme left) and why she lost the general election (she wasn't left enough to represent a better option than Trump). The video says when Trump leaves office we'll need to deal with a conservative leaning political environment, but the reality is that we'll need to deal with an *even more* conservative environment, and the unthinkable (in reality, fairly centrist, but actually leftist and not just leftist in name) policies of someone like Bernie Sanders become apocalyptic outside the window of normal.

Speaking of a low bar - Trump recently received a standing ovation for drinking a glass of water with one hand.

before Trump the overtone window was not where left believe it was. Trump was supported by a half of the population with his "extreme right" views. If you think that a half of the country is extreme right, may be there is something wrong with you and your overtone window?

Josiah, where 18 percent comes from? On Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_election,_2016 46 for Trump, 48 for Clinton If you mean that many eligible voters didn't vote at all -- who's fault is that? Let me put it differently: half of the population that cares about politics voted for Trump. If you do not bother to vote - you should not be taken into account when it goes to stuff like overtone window

Josiah - this number (18%) does not represent anything. Out of 326 mln only 215 mln were eligible to vote. Do you count the rest as Clinton supporters? Out of 215 mln only 128 mln did actually vote. Do you also count those who didn't for Clinton? If people didn't vote, you cannot know their political position, so they do not count for "overtone window"

Josiah, one can make the number even lower, if you add people that are already dead.

Josiah, well, voting gives the idea of what culturally is seen as normal. I would agree that European countries are slightly more to the left on average than US (I lived for some time in UK, Germany and Belgium). But you completely ignore the rest of the world (I mean everything except Commonwealth countries, Europe and to some extent South Korea and Japan), which makes may be 80 percent of the Earth's population. On this larger scale even Trump is extreme left.

Looking at the comments makes me feel like we're all doomed. So many people who voted for Trump are so far down the propaganda hole it seems like they'll never come back up.

Alex Marko Like what? Everything he just used as his Basis for this argument are lies with zero context. For example; Trump showing sympathy to white Supremacist, that never happened. He condemned them thoroughly. The Videos Trump retweeted from a hate group were in fact real and was illustrating how incompatible with the west Islamic Society is. Trump never once promoted violence. I could debunk this whole video.

Earthshine47 I don't know much about the video thing but it's been pretty clear how much Trump has been pandering to supremacists. After that guy ran over the protesters he said both sides were at fault. Who says that?

Alex Marko Trump did no such thing. “Racism is evil and those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and other hate groups,” Trump said. And saying that both groups where there to start violence was a fact.

The "Overton Window" was dragged way to the right long ago. Otherwise, by the logic of that own theory, how would he have gotten elected? Such a radical person as Trump would have had to have been normalized in the eyes of the voters, he couldn't just come in from out of the blue, completely off the scale, and win. Isn't that the whole theory?

The election isn't entirely apart of the mass public. The Overton Window is exactly just that.. The mass public's opinion. America has the electoral college.. No majority vote needed, the populace vote counts for little, has only 2 major parties, has an insanely high paywall to even try to run and has an insanely high media budget. The overton window theory wouldn't effect who gets elected, Because who gets elected, isn't up to the country's opinion.
