How Trauma Affects The Gut

We all deal with trauma at some point in life, but the good news is we can address it and come out stronger using the right tools. Since trauma is kept in both the mind and body, it makes sense that modalities that tap into the mind-body connection are successful to produce long-lasting healing. In this mini-episode Dr. Hyman is joined by world-renowned expert in using mind-body medicine to heal depression, anxiety, and psychological trauma, Jim Gordon, to discuss how trauma affects the gut and why nutrition is part of his trauma-healing protocol to help the entire body heal.
Dr. Jim Gordon is the author of The Transformation: Discovering Wholeness and Healing After Trauma and is a Harvard educated psychiatrist and a world-renowned expert in using mind-body medicine to heal depression, anxiety, and psychological trauma. He has worked with traumatized children and families in Bosnia, Gaza, Haiti, post-9/11 New York, and Parkland, among many other areas across the world facing tragedy and trauma. Dr. Gordon also works with veterans and active-duty military to address PTSD.

I always prided myself in being tough but when my father passed away from a pulmonary embolism and I was with him talking to him while he passed, it hit me like a nuclear explosion. I began constantly thinking and pondering life and death. I lost my appetite. I pretty much got PTSD that day.

Great information... just ordered six books of yours this week, they arrived today ! I have suggest to about five dr. What I felt my problems were with my health issues. Struggling for about four plus years now, only to have them look at me as if I was crazy....mental 👎🙁doctors just aren’t being trained in the importance of gut health, and don’t understand leaky gut at all, ...I’m so happy to find a dr. I believe in... and he speaks so much truth... excited to start feeling better.... just lost my dad to a massive stroke three weeks ago, and this information interview helped me so much...🙂thank you so much, I feel I’m on the right path, following your plan, very excited to start.... thank you 🙂Shannon Cowling Temecula ca....

The first hour or two of every morning traveling to work I will get an overwhelming need to use the toilet for a number 2, I have a bucket set up in the back of the van and quite seldom have to use it, and the weekends when I'm not at work a normalish bowel movement will occur later in the day, it really ticks me off

Would 14 yrs of chronic fight or flight stress that cannot be resolved cause stomach, gall bladder, liver, and digestive problems in general?

Yes, but why chronic?? Doesn't make sense. Coping mechanisms, deep breathing, sleep quality, foods and do on. Everything is connected and has a affect.

@@Station-uf3nd I have had a series of things happen due to a severe trauma in 2006. It is a situation that created other situations to where there is no permanent solution so I am trying to learn to live with the results of the original trauma. It is complicated to explain. However, the stress has caused some health issues and I am trying to learn to deal with it all.

@@lynny5510 I understand. By chance have you looked into the work of Dr. Bruce Lipton? If not, I recommend that you do. He deep dives into our wiring, our biology, our behaviours and reactions. He has published books and videos. The Biology of Belief is one of his more famous works. There are videos of all lengths on ytube as well. Another source is Joe Dispenza. Good luck! 🙏

I was exposed to unneccesary amounts of the improper exterminating chemicals. I was exposed to deadly chemicals due to a corruptive political system.in my town. I almost died from the exposure. Ive uncovered the scheme, but am.permanently damaged snd altered. On top of that the anger over everything i went through, alot of my friends have taken sides on this event. Ive got a disrespectful 36 year old son with dep.personal problems. I am estranged from my gamily due to severe family problems. My digestion is shot due to the Cancer surgery that the cockroach poison caused. I medicated myself for years to deal with the frustration of being lied to, disrespected and thrown out. Im angryband lots of people around me are to scared to speak out like i do. Everything is said and done behind peoples backs. This is the way the world is now. Its a horrible disappointment after struggling to kick the drugs i was medicating myself with. The world is a very bad place. Thats still how i feel.

C D maybe it was the dairy, which is one of the big common food allergies, especially dairy that has been pasteurized and full of hormones and fed GMO grains. Either way, I agree we are all different. What works for one doesn’t work for another. My point was in his comment that red meat was inflammatory, as a blanket statement, that is absolutely not true. Glad what you did worked!

Factory raised and feedlot finished for sure, but lumping it all together is misleading! Many plants are extremely inflammatory for some...and trigger histamines. Each individual must determine what foods are their triggers and which are soothing. P.S. my family harvested a high plains mule deer one year...egads, it’s main diet must have been sagebrush...I couldn’t eat it...actually caused a reaction in me...it’s absolutely true, that it matters what your eating ate!
