How Toradora Broke Me

Фильм және анимация

Toradora gave me post-anime depression. Here's how.
Post anime depression is the feeling you get when you finish an anime that's really REALLY good, and now that it's over you just feel... empty. That's Toradora. But how does it do this? Technically it's just another highchool romance. But it has to be doing SOMETHING different, right?

Have you watched the Toradora OVA? It's called the meaning of bento. I'm not positive which point it was supposed to occur, but it was very cute, and very clear that Minori and Aki were teasing Taiga about making Ryuuji a bento. It's pretty cute.

For me, it was the pool scene. Ryuji almost drowns, and when he's lying on the pool deck, Taiga screams at everyone to get away from him because he belongs to her. Taiga's terrified for Ryuji and she doesn't know how to express herself other than blind rage. That's a powerful scene.

That's something that is very difficult to do for so many people. Including myself. Between my previous relationship to what has happened a couple years later with another relationship and the events that for all I know has caused so much damage that I am unsure if I can ever heal from it. The last decade in a half were atrocious years of my life of learning and failing and attachments and relationships and actions and words that said or typed that cultivated including my prior years of family issues among other things has caused so much strife that just as I was before I am almost completely broken. Emotionless most of the time and unable to socially function at times, I rarely show anything and when I do its almost always anger which has done nothing to ever help me and only has caused more pain. I also struggle to let go of attachments as I probably believe that they're all I really have anymore outside of anime or my games and at the same time I fear relationships as well. I know I need to emotionally grow and heal before having a healthy relationship but I have so many fears and such a weak state of mind that I hide myself even at work and it has really shown in my workplace from when I started to now. While I am also doing school which hasn't probably helped or maybe it has or will. No one really knows who I am not even myself it seems. I have respect for those who face such hardships and are able to make something of them.

The fact she realizes she's been crying knowing if Ryuuji and Minori end up together he wouldn't be able to be next to her and her screaming his name. them spending a year apart meant they learned how to love each other without depending on each other - before that time skip, taiga couldn't have survived without ryuji. she took a year to learn how to love herself, so that their love could then be 100% pure, not born out of necessity or need for something the other provided. that "pure love" is the "thing nobody's ever seen" they reference in the start and end of the show. love between two people who can exist separately, but choose to exist as one. the episode titles also mirror this line of thinking - ep 1 is Tiger and Dragon, because they first meet and their relationship isn't really personal yet. ep 2 is Taiga and Ryuji, which is basically the same title except more personal to the characters - because that's when they first start to fall in love. then the final ep is Toradora (meaning basically "Tiger-Dragon") and its description is literally "Two finally become one." tldr the ending was literally perfect and built upon the writing, symbolism, and imagery all the way from the start of the series.

When ToraDora released, my wife and I had already been married several years and watched it together. Unlike a lot of people, we found the ending very satisfying. Taiga and Ryuji had already proven their commitment to each other. Now they made the responsible decision to make their relationship into something they could openly and proudly share with their families. I didn’t think the ending short changed their romance. It was more of a grown up romance than a shallow teenage “confess-kiss-sex-the end” formula.

The ending does leave you with a bad feeling but it makes perfect sense. The entire show comes back several times to the point that you can't lie to yourself and run away from your feelings forever. Taiga making the decision that it's time to face her family head on, despite making both her and the viewer feel terrible that she left, is the proof of how much the characters in general progress through the show. I think a lot of it comes from the fact that all the caracters have flaws and those affect their lives in big ways, it makes them relatable, because most people are like that, even if they dont realise it. I also like that at the end only two caracters actualy get a sort of good ending, while everyone else ends at square 1 or even worse, but they accept it and move on, because they cant do anything about it exept be happy for their friends.

ANGEL BEATS On the other hand Ffs for a few years after i watched it, everytime i Got reminded of this anime, depression and anxiety came with it and im not even joking. It was fucked up even with the post credits scene. When I think about it, steins gate and Angel Beats fucked me up emotionally so much that they affected how i lived my life and broke my real life reactions to the experiences that shouldve been more freeing so im actually jealous of u ppl being sad about an anime that actually has a good and realistic ending 😢 moral of the story is to NOT hide emotions and surely dont layer em over time, but actually Express them as soon as u can. Otherwise ur health and overall emotional being will be fucked up. Have a good day brothers and watch what u watch especially when ur still a Little shit. 💗

I disagree. Taiga and Ryuuji’s story ended when it needed to, but Minori and Ami’s didn’t. They got shafted by the final arc of the show, it focused too much on the main couple than them and Yusaku, even though they were all important characters who deserved their own satisfying conclusions. On the rare chance that this series gets any kind of continuation, I would hope for it focus more on them and how they go about life without Ryuuji, because he seemed to be the only thing that mattered to both of them. Yusaku as well deserved a better ending, because he was so irrelevant from the final arc, he could’ve been written out entirely.

My biggest surprise was with Ryuji's friend Yusaku. episode one Ryuji walks with him to school and he introduces us to him with "this is my friend" and i'm thinking "oh cool, a male in a romance show that isn't the lead. can't wait to never see or hear from him ever again." but no, the dude sticks around and is an essential character! he's on the student council, but he's not super strait laced. he likes to have fun and goofs around, but never in a way that would cause anyone trouble. when he got rejected everyone felt for the guy and when he wouldn't run for president everyone got concerned. My favorite little character moment from him was after ryuji fell in the water, he brought ryuji a pair of his cloths to wear. He's an honest homie!

FYI for anybody with post Toradora depression, there's a visual novel for the psp that extends the story. The true ending with Taiga is the best imo. Sure it was only released in Japan but emulators and English patches exist for a reason, it's the same length as the show so it's either going to finally give you closure or make it worse

Just goes to show what an amazing series this is, I honestly don't get emotional very often, but something about this show gets me every time, and I think you hit on a lot of the reasons why with this video, so thank you for that.

Toradora was the first anime I legitimately binge watched and did nothing else over a weekend. I love the characters, the emotional rollercoaster, and the ambiguous ending actually fits it. There is not 'Happily ever after' just the best you can do with the person you love. Toradora is what I aspire to be, but can never achieve for myself.

When I was 10 and first started watching Toradora, my head couldn't grasp the layered problems that were going on so I was still watching blindly without knowing what went on. But the show still hit me hard, still giving me the toradora depression. This goes to show that even without you thinking or not able to grasp the situation fully, the emotions and actions you do understand will still give you the full story just from a slightly different perspective, which makes the show truly remarkable.(Even this sentence couldn't fully convey what I mean) Which makes the saying, "Toradora walked so it can save its energy and run" just beautiful. You did great man, keep it up :)

the first time i ever finished toradora, it made me change my whole view of how love works and how to deal with it. i have rewatched toradora so many times because it makes me happy to see a anime understand and explain the real way love works. i cry every time i watch toradora because of how much i relate to it. people show different emotions/actions when in love with someone, it can be hard for many people to show true emotion and instead show agression or trys too hard to get closer to that person.

That episode where all the facade falls and everyone, specially Ryuji, had to face Taiga's feelings head on, something he had consistently pushed others to do, is now at that moment where he himself has to face the music. That entire episode stuck to me for YEARS!!!! How long? Ever since the anime first aired! A time when KZread videos were a maximum of 10 mins each. Back when Crunchyroll was still pirating anime and they aired uploaded fansubs of Toradora. That episode and the emotions it had, stuck to me, that I will never forget it. A lot of other scenes are as memorable as well... The pool scene, the fight with the previous student council, Taiga chasing after Ryuji, her confession... key moments I tell you... They stick with you the moment you focus on it. But that episode where the facade just falls, my god that was brilliant!

I just finished rewatching Toradora for the second time. Toradora is the only anime I've ever rewatched, let alone twice. I totally empathize with how it feels so nostalgic even though I only started watching it last year. It's also all these moments that I remember the most when I think about this anime. Even with this rewatch I got in a post-anime depression state, where I want to do nothing but think about the anime and maybe listen to the nostalgic openings and endings. That's how good it is.

My favorite episode is still the last two episodes when the two decided to elope, only to find Ryuji's mom ran away. The point where Ryuji got to meet his grandparents and the moment when his grandparents tell his mom that she did a great job raising him. It was a very emotional moment where the grandparents were basically admitting they were wrong to the daughter they felt wasn't mature enough to raise a child. The anime Hanasaku Iroha felt similar, with a mom that was too afraid to return home to the family that still loved her.

My favorite thing about Toradora! is that you know exactly what is going to happen before you even finish the first episode. You know that Taiga and Riyuji are going to end up together in the end. But its the way that they get there that's so impactful. The first half of the show is typical rom-com shenanigans, but by the second half, you're in the full swing of the plot and all the emotions come down at once. I still often times go back to that 23rd episode just to watch and let all the nostalgia flood me, a year and a half later. This is a show that is beloved, but not talked about seriously nearly enough. I wasn't expecting Toradora! to be good. I left with a feeling of contentness afterwards.
