Great video Brother. I look for defensive tutorials because thats how I was trained in the Army. I too am transitioning from iron sights but like you said, performance is obtained through consistent training. So thanks for sharing your real world knowledge. I’m waiting on a Holosun 407 for my Sig 365xl edc and will be coming back to this video soon. You have a new subscriber here.

I own both a Holosun 507C and a Holosun 515GM. Unlike the 515GM and the Trijicon RMRs... the 507C can't be adjusted without the special tool. However... the tube style 515GM and all Trijicon optics can be adjusted with the extractor lip of a spent shell. This is super handy, if for some reason your optic gets screwed up in the field. I'm not sure why Holosun didn't add the larger features to the 507C to enable this. It makes total sense.

I am a decent shot with my Sig 226 with iron sights but a terrible shot with my Glock 17 with hand-sized groups. So I decided to invest in having my Glock 17 get an optic cut. I bought the Holosun 507C with ACSS Vulcan. I went from hand-sized groups to half-dollar-sized groups during my first shooting session with 100 rounds of ammo. I was amazed that my eyes adapted quickly to the new optic sighting system. It's a game-changer for me.

I haven't outfitted either of these with a red dot yet but have set up my Sig P-322 with a Holsun 407 just to get used to using a red dot and at 10 yards I find I've become more proficient at shooting with the red dot. Thx for the video man ! My eyes are starting to get bad too lol so this is good timing and advice to nip it in the bud now while I still can train with it competently. But back to the topic at hand; I always noticed the digital reticles can easily disappear by just looking/holding at a slight angle in any direction damn near ; almost feels like the sensitivity to the cant is a bit more than say a rifle scope. But maybe I just need to jump in and try to learn from here. Sweet cant wait for ur next vids brother thx ! 🤘🔥

This literally changed my perspective on red dot zeroing. Im not the best at it. I have a Trijicon MRO on lay away now for work. This is definitely something that im putting in my toolbox. The unorthodox zeroing that I have seen for pistols just doesnt make sense to me. Co-witnessing does, you're not alway gonna be at the 25 yard line with the shot. The hold over is a thing, but its intimidating if youre behind the gun in a stressful situation. Without the million reps you need on the range, its a little sketchy. I know the hold over from rifle to pistol doesnt fully relate!'

I totally agree on the point of not carrying a red dot on a CCW gun until one is absolutely proficient incl. muscle memory and having in mind quality of your eyes/sight picture. I see that kids learn directly and only to shoot with red dots on rifles and handguns directly. But what if some unexpected happens to the optic and Murpheys law bumps in. The parallel training pf both is a great thing 👌🏻

@@jg9764 in theory I’d agree that the same grain bullet would land where your carry ammo would as well, but you never know until you test it. Another good reason to test your carry ammo at the range is to make sure it cycles properly and not assume it’ll run flawlessly.

@@jg9764 My only thing with hollow Vs defensive ammo and grain weight is that the defensive ammo is usually loaded to a hotter spec with more FPS and that might effect your POI. 165gr HST in .40 S&W is 1130 fps and the basic 165gr range ammo I about is noticeably slower. Same with the 180gr stuff.

I shot three rounds at a time, at the lower left target. My first three rounds were very low left . I over-corrected. My next three rounds went to the lower right target. My third and fourth groups were back on the lower left target. After a few more groups and adjustments, I placed my next group in the middle of the middle right bullseye and considered my red dot zeroed. Now, I have to work on my grip....

This is great to know. I am planning to install one, Holosun 508T, and now, before doing any adjustments, I plan to see it at 25 yards.

I did all the ballistics calculations based on the 124gr bullets I use... use a ballistic calculator. I found that a 7 yard zero gives me a +2 inches at 50 yards and a -2 inches at 100 yards. When you zero at 25 yards most 9mm bullets will be -10 inch to -16 inches at 100 yards. With my PMC 124gr FMJ cartridges I can put the dot on center A zone anywhere from 5 yards out to 100 yards and I’m in the A Zone +/-2inches from my dot. At a class at CTA in Piru CA on a break down by range 17 I started hitting the 8” steel gongs that are up in the hills with ease. When we range finded to them, they were 105 to 125 yards from where I was standing... I was just putting the dot on the steel. Also with the standard circle and dot Holosun reticle, the 3 yard zero is exactly at the bottom hash mark of the circle when I zero at 7 yards. With the ACSS reticle, the 3 yard zero is at the bottom of the Chevron. If I change the ammo I am using and the length of barrel then my zero will need to change. With my Glock 34 I need to zero at 9 yards with the holosun 507 to achieve the same results. Also different optics that have different height over bore will change where you zero.

@@rich1958 ...I went down the rabbit hole after seeing Shawn Ryan’s video about the 36 yard zero for ARs. Got me thinking about possible non-standard zero for handguns and if any would be flatter out to 100 yards than a 15 or 25 yard zero. I’ll post the results I got for the handguns and optics I have if you are interested... definitely look up the ballistic info for the rounds you use with the optic you use and see what works best....

I don’t know why but when I was sighting in my competition pistol with the holosun I had issues. My process normally was to use the bore laser first to get close @ 7 yards then I normally shoot offhand to finish sighting in. This time I decided to use a bench rest to take out any variables. I still don't understand why I had such crazy inconsistencies when using the rest vs offhand. I put the pic rail on the Y section and used my two hands to rest on the base pad. I had the barrel level with my hands and everything but I was very inconsistent.

I usually zero my pistols at 15 but i put a 1" circle on the target so i have a precise aiming spot. I'm thinking about changing my zero to 10 tho but with a 15 yard zero it is zeroed around 50 yards also so that is why i picked 15 so you can just aim at the a zone and hit in the a zone from 1 to 50 yards without worrying about your off set other than precise shot placement.

How often are shooting out to 50yds with a handgun? I’m getting back in to pistol shooting with my new 10mm that I’m hiking with. I usually only target shoot to out 10 maybe 15yds max. I can’t imagine a 50yd shot with confidence.

One other suggestion: get a laser boresight system and use it. I picked up one that was relatively inexpensive and have used it on multiple handguns. After doing the laser boresight, every firearm has been dead on at the range.

@@frogmantactical Understood, and I wouldn't trust it without confirming everything at the range. And my system also has issues with any barrel shorter than about 4". The big thing is to make sure that, after you get a zero with the laser, you pull it out and rotate it 180 degrees, and then move the aimpoint halfway. Basically the same way we used to boresight Abrams tanks back in my much younger days. And, if nothing else, it ensures I'm on the paper right from the get-go. Your system (obviously) works too, and I expect you've got more experience with yours than I have with mine. Thanks much for the video!

Hi FrogMan - love your videos. My only wish was at 9:37 I was really hoping you'd explain to us the actual adjustments on the optic since you were hitting low and right. I have been confused as there's conflicting information online about moving your dot to the group or moving the group to your dot. Low and right - did you adjust it up and left? My thinking with those adjustments would move the dot up and left so even further away from the grouping. Sorry for the confusion!

Noobie question. I mean, this is the way I do it, but I could be wrong. In order to isolate everything, I just use a bore sight, those ones that looks like an ammo, and than I zero the dot with the laser dot in the target to the distance that I want. This way I guarantee that my dot is on top of the laser dot that is coming from the center of the barrel.
