I don't actually write songs, but I do write a lot of fanfictions and books, and I currently have two drafts waiting on a song to be written, as they're both about artists that use their singing voice. This helped a lot!

The third verse suggestion is excellent. Thank you. I’m alright at writing completely new lyrics to an existing melody but the extra focus brought by actually extending the existing song is a great idea More lyrics videos please

This is so helpful! This is the kind of advice I've been looking for. When I'm suffering writer's block, I find it nice to listen to songs and analyze the lyrics after. I do this with everyone from Taylor Swift to Sufjan Stevens

actually, i really really agree with the reading and analysis part, like, yesterday, all of a sudden i decided to look up the meaning of washing machine heart by mitski, since i loved listening to it, but never really thought of diving deeper into the song before, and i was honestly mind blown, her song writing is so amazing, and it genuinely taught me so much in such a short time- I didnt even have time to look it up properly, yet i learnt a lot!! and well, its not the first time ive tried to look up the meaning of a song, but this time i was just so astonished

Also I just want to say if you don't want to be vulnerable (which you don't have to be if it's something private or you don't feel comfortable then don't write it) you can create a character and write something from their perspective and write how their feeling and everything so that people think it's relatable and touching still but it doesn't have to be something personal and it could be a part of a series :)

Alot of artists have done that and also if you want to write something personal it can be ambiguous cause there are plenty of songs that we believe are about one thing but are something entirely just remember to be descriptive and you can make up a story to diverge from the true meaning and make it interesting

These are such good tips!! Especially the 3rd one. Giving yourself a few limitations really activates your creativity. As for discovering new music, there's also a lot you can learn fron the old music legends. i started listening to Fleetwood mac and i was blown away by the songwriting, they have a very distinct style

When I'm bored I usually like to write songs and send them to my friends and I imagine it a popular song so I can get used to the lyrics easier. I also write stories, books and poems a lot so this helps a TON.

I find that something that helps me is listening to songs without reading the lyrics. since when I sing it I'll sing a portion of it and then randomly make up the rest of the lyric. gives me a starting point for the rest of it.

I know this is a year old lol but something that helps me sometimes when I'm feeling stuck is looking back on old songs I've written and changing the lyrics to make them better. If you have a song with a good melody but you aren't proud of the lyrics, that doesn't mean throw the whole song away!

This is the most helpful video i've seen about songwriting as you're actually telling us based on what other song writers usually do, what I mean is poetic devices! Every songwriter uses it and that's what qualifies it as a song's lyrics rather than just a paragraph of I don't know.. emotions? Maybe you could make sure you have something you can record yourself with handy (if I don't have anything I try to repeat what I thought over and over until I find a way to record it so I don't lose it lol) and then record. Listen back and then work from there

Totally agree with setting limitations. It creates boundaries and forces you to think differently. Just like someone having limited resources creating the best invention the world wasn’t ready for. They were forced to squeeze out the creativity and solution bc of the tight space. Sometimes we need pressure to pour out. We need some boundaries to become better versions of ourself and or create unique and authentic pieces.

So I'm 11 and I'm thinking of writing an album as a summer project.Its called Superhero? I've only written 2 of the songs so far....One of them is a rap and one is a soft ballad type song. my problem is that i’ll write a part that i’m sooo proud of but then i can’t write the rest of the lyrics because they don’t live up to the expectations that i set from those first few lines 😭 edit: i did end up finishing a couple songs that i’m quite proud of 🤭

@@laasya_828 i’ve found it helpful to write those lyrics down in a separate note so you can just write down random ideas in there and come back to them if you think there are pieces that would fit together

Me to I want to make my own music so I can at least find the relatable song to me but it's hard for me to produce it and sing but I like to write my lyrics also if it's hard for your lyrics think about good lyrics you like or just write it right away

Tip if you want: if you want to add a word to your lyrics but it doesn't fit you can look up a synonym of it so it can fit your lyrics

I like that your writing had an unusual rhyme scheme by making “-round” from “around” slant rhyme with “town” and “spine” which all have this “ah” sound in common I don’t see this type of rhyming used enough outside of lyrical Hip Hop. As a songwriter for the last 10 years I could take these words and write multisyllable rhymes such as - Around the floor (instead of around) - My spinal cord (instead of spine) - A town resort (instead of town) Other 4 syllable rhymes that could work would be “like I don’t know”, “my final form”, “why I record”, “nice guys be cold”, “about rewards”, “swiped right before”, “lifestyle reform”, etc
