    Nice advice. The old-schooler in me wants to point out the lead is actually the lede, but that looks confusing to the modern eye. - 30 -

  • @VelocityWriting

    @VelocityWriting

    3 жыл бұрын

    I'm with you 100%. I'm torn every time I write it. We know that "lede" is the proper professional term today. However, when I use it, people criticize equally and insist it is "lead." You have to keep in mind that "lede" only came into the language in the 1970s and didn't show up in dictionaries until 2008. "Old school" is thus a relative term. www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/bury-the-lede-versus-lead Software like Word and other major writing tools still mark "lede" as a misspelled word. In recent years I have started referring to it as the "hook" because it defines the function of the first paragraph.

    May I ask if news writing is much better than editorial writing?

  • @VelocityWriting

    @VelocityWriting

    2 жыл бұрын

    Better? Historically, they have been considered two completely different types of writing. News writing is an objective report. It provides the the "who, what, and when" of an event, and the reader draws his or her conclusions from these objective facts. Editorial writing is subjective, not objective. The writer is interpreting the news for the reader. The writer filters it though their own ideological lens. The writer is saying the reader in incapable of thinking independently, and most be told what to think. This approach has contributed to the sharp polarization of views in recent times. There is a place for news (the front page) and there is a place for opinion (the editorial page). However, when news and commentary are mixed, as we too often see today, it is nothing more than propaganda.

    Hi may i ask a question why we cant use I in making a news report

  • @VelocityWriting

    @VelocityWriting

    5 жыл бұрын

    Historically, news reporting has been objective. The news person did not inject themselves or their views into the story. News people reported facts and readers, listeners or viewers came to their own conclusions. The news person was the unbiased observer who just "reported" the facts of the situation, so there was never a reason for them to use the personal pronoun, "I." Sadly, this has changed in the last few years, and, as a former journalist, I think it is a bad thing. Objective reporting has been replaced by subjective commentary. Commentary on the news used to be relegated to the Editorial (Opinion) Page. No longer. Every reporter seems to be a pundit now, and that damages journalism. Reporters are not providing the facts for us to evaluate, they are feeding us their ideology and bias. Anytime the reporter (or the news agency) becomes the story, rather than reporting the story, then you have journalistic corruption in my view.

    Can a shy/introverted person be a good journalist??

  • @VelocityWriting

    @VelocityWriting

    2 жыл бұрын

    Being shy and introverted are not good characteristics for any job where you deal with people. And journalists always take the lead in engaging with people. Being shy and introverted is a learned behavior. Yet, in reality, It does not protect you from anything. I was shy until I was a teenager, but learned some communication skills. Later, I served as a journalist in 31 different countries interviewing maybe a thousand people over the years. You can and should unlearn your bad social skills. View YT videos on "How to start a conversation," practice those skills for three weeks with new people, and you'll have a new outlook on life. You can do it!

    The angle you take in writing the article is influenced by your personal biases. For me, I don't think saying that news articles merely state the fact is entirely correct. Our biases must always tend towards the people and the common good.

  • @VelocityWriting

    @VelocityWriting

    4 жыл бұрын

    Sorry, Fran, as a journalist in past years who covered stories in over 30 countries, I completely reject your perspective. I hope people who read what you said will reject it too. What you say is unethical in my experience. News is an objective, unbiased reporting of facts. Readers/viewers/listeners independently make up their mind based on the facts, not the tainted bias injected by a reporter. Opinion belongs on the Editorial Page, never the news page or newscast. Biased news reporting is just propaganda. Propaganda NEVER serves the common good.
