Jane, it's 3am and I'm up watching this series. I stumbled across part 4 around midnight, backed up and started from the beginning. I've wondered if the story I've written might be considered a cozy. Feeling a bit more certain after watching. Will keep watching, will share, and hope you're someplace on the web where we might one day have a conversation. All the videos are stellar. Thanks for the series!

I loved Remington Steele! So much so, that I had a character named after him because his dad liked the show.

I was a big Remington Steele fan in the 80's! Now that you mention it, I can see how the show had elements of the cozy mystery. This is very helpful because as a fan, I know what elements I wanted to see in each show. BTW, this whole series is great!

This is such a helpful video! I've read some great mysteries that has a great plot but the romance is just . . . meh. And I don't want my book to be one of those 🙈

So what do you do when your protagonist is already married and mature (not young and single)? Cozies where the protagonist is married and "rediscovering the romance" in their marriage have never worked for me as a reader. They have always felt forced and awkward. In the ms I'm writing now, my char has been married many years. Her first case takes place far from her home town, so her husband is not part of plot. So far, my answer to this has been to develop a romance between two main characters in the town where she is investigating, but I'm not sure how to set them up for this specific story. My question would be: "How vital is it that a Cozy Tea even *have* a romantic plotline, of any sort?" Traditional Cozies have often had single female protagonists without a love interest. (Agatha Christie comes to mind, of course, as does "Murder She Wrote" etc.) But it is now the standard for there to be a love interest?

While it's common for there to be a romantic subplot, I don't think this is required at all. Romance is a big plus for me, but that's personal--it's not needed for every book in the genre. Some very successful series that get by with no romance, or are at least light on it: the Mary Russell series by Laurie R. King, the Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman; the Hawthorne books by Anthony Horowitz. I know I talk about it a lot, but the Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters is my favorite model for a great cozy mystery with characters who are already married. (And there are several books within that series that do what you suggested, pair up two characters who are not the sleuths. Off the top of my head, I *believe* this happened in books 3, 4, and 5, as well as some others. ) Hope this helps!
