As a writer who has spent the past five years writing by the seat of my pants...guys, PLEASE take David Webb's advice on this. I can't stress enough how important it is. The amount of times I've become burned out, bored, uninspired, or written just plain trash (like my first three books) is excruciating. After five long years of writing, I'm finally beginning to see the value in outlining. Please. Outline. Save yourselves. Also, that outtro. XD I'm dying. I live for the humor that drives home the point.

Good work you are doing. I have to share this to my audience and trainees. Being an Author and Publisher myself, this info is a gold mine. For the last bit, as a KZreadr and content creator I relate... It is never easy.

Thanks for this video! I get so anxious and depressed about my writing so often and it's really nice to hear a reminder to just have fun with it. I took a break from writing for about a month and a half and I think it's about time I get back into it with the trusty outline by my side.

Thanks so much for this! I’m a HEAVY outliner, however I have a tough time sticking with initial concepts just because I lose sight of having fun with it (that and probably not writing with one specific person in mind, so the concepts start to feel less genuine and intimate).

I like tip #4 Write to one person, because I am literally writing to one person. I am writing my memoirs specifically for my son. I don't expect anyone else to read it so I am making it personal to him. I will also publish it myself by making a DIY hardback cover for it. It is fun.

Hey man I’ve just been binge watching loads of your videos. Most of the yt channels about writing are really cringey and annoying but you are so good. I was so surprised when I saw how many subs you’ve got. Dw though you’re going big places I’m waiting for your channel to blow up. As someone with a small channel I know your pain but if you keep uploading I think you may be massive one day. I’m currently writing my first book and all your knowledge is golden to me right now. Thank you I bailed on my books so much and they never see the light of day, and I hope in the near future I can go back to some of my old idea... a lot of people saying I am not trying to be me.

Of all of the videos I recently watched, yours by far gave me encouragement, I have enjoyed writing by book. I have a question, wow, in thinking how to phrase the question I not only was able to answer it myself but several other questions too, simply by listening again to your video. I agree that it is important to know what your end-goal is when writing a book. I tell my subscribers to know their end-goal when world-building, plotting or various stages of writing. If you know what you are trying to accomplish, it'll be in the back of your mind while you're writing and the end result will be a better project.

Recently me and my friend started a religion called “The Confraternity of the Snail” and we need to write a scripture. This will be sure to help!

Very awesome advise. Especially the one about writing to one person. I am currently working on a non-fiction inspirational book, I only have a few pages down. But I have a question after watching this very helpful video. ¿Is it ok if I’m writing to several individuals (3 or 4) including myself, since I’m learning and putting my own experiences together as a write? And if so, is there a way to avoid telling my audience what to do in my narrative., I want it to be a thoughtful conversation rather than a manual. I appreciate your help! Thank you.

Hi, is Self-Publishing a great choice?

This is really good advice for a person who is divided between wanting to publish and not wanting to. I've been writing since I was in 3rd grade for fun, but now I've been looking into publishing my book. I didn't have an outline for my book, and after watching this I started writing a basic outline! Looking at this makes me feel slightly better about my odd ideas. I'm currently 14 but I'm obsessed with adult (Fantasy/ horror). I need some advice from an actual writer, versus just the opinions of my beta readers (They don't give me enough criticism in my opinion). I'm writing a book slightly beyond my age level, any advice? (Sorry if this comment goes off topic a lot 😅 I subscribed by the way)

That's awesome! I hope you get it sorted out in your head and on paper. As far as writing beyond your age, the single best way to get a feel for that is to obsessively read books in that age range. It's hard to really make that language and culture your own because you haven't personally experienced it, but you can get really close to that kind of experience by reading about it a lot. I really don't think there's any better way, at least until you get older and see it yourself!

I am currently 14 as well and I want to write a murder mystery book and possibly make it into a series. I have no idea where to write it though like I have no idea what real authors use to write. I'm also not sure whether I want to make it for myself or publish it. I'm most likely going to publish it but I'm just intimidated by the idea of having it published because I have no idea what all goes into that. But I totally agree with you about want to reach out to an older audience without sounding like a younger writer. Hope all went well for you .

9:04 1: I want to write a book for myself to free my pain

Out of curiosity, how do you balance the advice that (if you want to be published) you're not writing for yourself with that of having fun? I've always taken the "write for yourself" idea to mean that you should write a story idea you're passionate and excited about, and that will help you have fun and avoid burnout. I was wondering how you balance the two ideas.

It depends on how you define writing for yourself. If you take it to strictly mean being passionate and excited about a story, that's good. However, if you take on the mantra that you are writing for yourself, it quickly turns into a selfish process that fails to consider the reader. A writer must always consider the reader at every step of the writing process if they wish to publish. See the "write to one person" point. There are some caveats to this, such as writing to a younger version of yourself as a cautionary tale to other people, but those caveats are few and far in between. What even more people do is use it as an excuse to defy genre and reader expectations, throwing in endless twists and nonsensical plot devices because it tickles the fancy of the writer. It may feel good to do, but you end up writing a story that no one wants to read.

Writing by the seat of your pants works well for some authors. It depends on tbe person and type of books. For non fiction, I like to plan. For a novel, I write by the seat of my pants. Because life is lived one decision at a time, I write my novels like that. But for non fiction, I am solving a problem for someone.

Brought to you by the planner gang. Joking aside, it always seemed to me that pantsers dominated the writing spaces. Hell, look at Stephen King's On Writing. I love that book, but he's also a pantser and it always seemed that they were and on to something. Like a mystical secret to writing. Keeping this in mind, I decided to approach my third draft of my novel this way. Since I already had the previous two drafts as a foundation, you can't really say it is fully unplanned. However, I went in with the idea of overhauling the story and would have needed notes or plot points, at least. It wasn't fun. I would get stuck at times and didn't know why until I realized that I couldn't really write until I knew where I was going. I may not be a full planner, but pantsing is really not for me. Anyways, great video! Currently binging your channel and find it really insightful.
