How to wood turn glass and epoxy resin hybrid burl vase
In this woodturning video, I will transform some large spalted burls or burrs into a hybrid epoxy resin vase / vessel. This project is a fully functional piece of art due to the glass insert what protect the wood from any water damage. To achieve high gloss finish with this woodworking craft item I used several layers of gloss lacquer. At some point making this project I thought it is a complete failure due to some hiccup but glad I decided to go ahead and finish 😊

Beautiful choice of colour to go with the amazing burl, another great piece.😘😘
Beautiful!
The combination of the burl and that gorgeous deep blue resin is so beautiful - the addition of the glass tube is perfect as I often wondered if putting water straight into one of your vases would ruin them, so glad you put that tube in. The allover effect with the flowers is stunning! 🤩👍👀🥀🥇🏆

Solid work, David! Really fine results. I might've undercut the base a bit more for less hand work, (I'm not a fan of fan of hand finishing the bottom), but that's my only critique on the method, not the results, which is what matters most. :)
god bless your hands

Thank you. I make one red and burl no problem. Have not done one for longt time.
I’ve always wanted to try something like this. I am curious, when the object is in the very beginning stage and it’s still square, how hard is it on your hands to use the chisel to start the rounding of the edges process? Beautiful work!!
@DavidsWoodturning
Жыл бұрын
Thanks Jeni. I am taking very small passes at the beginning so no it is not hard on my hands. However, due to not being round therefore is not spinning completely true it will cause loads of chip outs. And those chip outs can be very painful when they hit you hand as they are like lithe glass(resin) shards. Sometimes I take on gloves to protect but do mot show that on camera to avoid showing bad practice. I could trim it in a table saw and bandsaw but both of my saws cut perfect square so in order to trim i would need adjust that.
When working with resin and/or burl wood, do you always use carbide tools and why/why not? Thanks for another inspiring video resulting in a piece that is both functional and beautiful!
@DavidsWoodturning
Жыл бұрын
Thanks Elaine. Burl on its own would not really need carbide, some sharp traditional tools would work perfectly. But when it is a hybrid project (with resin for example) carbides are outperforming traditional chisels. All my hybrid turnings done with negative rake carbide tips and that simply eliminated all the chip outs what i used to have before using negative rake.

Just a quick question, why is it that you don’t cut down the blank on a band saw to make it hexagonal before turning? It is a time thing or just it’s more fun to turn? Beautiful vase and resin colour choice. Keep up the stunning ideas and videos, always a pleasure to watch.
@DavidsWoodturning

Both my bandsaw and table saw is set to perfect square. In order to trim I would need to adjust to like 45 degrees angle. So at the end I would not safe much time getting all the settings back to normal. Plus it is fun to turn :)
Can you put water for fresh flowers in this type of vase?
