    Excellent vid....this has answered the question I had. I knew some sort of isolator was involved but wasn't sure if it was a diode. I'm about to wire my reverse cam up to my stereo head unit. I also want to wire a separate switch in the dash to the cam and this has clarified it all for me. Thanks.

    Just found this video, paused it and liked it solely for the fact you just called out 95% of people on KZread 🤣. Everyone looks for a "how too video" not a "how it works video". Funny part about that is, that 95% of people will spend 95% more time on KZread. Because they will never actually learn anything, just learn how to "color in the lines".......Thank you

    Your actual backup light on the car probably draws much more current than the LEDs shown. You would need to measure the current going to the backup light to make sure you have enough current margin in the diode for that backup light circuit. Probably need 2 different current rating diodes or two higher current rating if using the same diode.

    If both switches are on? Florida (Sept. 17, 2020) - Yes, this was my question as well. What if both switches are engaged. That is, the car is put in reverse (sending power to the camera & monitor) and, the manual switch was on as well? I presume all that will happen is the backup lights will the be channeled power? The desired result should occur - that is, the backup light gets engaged on as the car is reversing, then , the backup light turns off when transition lever returns to drive. Yet, since the manual switch is on, the camera stays on. I suppose we should make sure the manual power switch has a plan to automatically turn off. Perhaps using ignition switch power. That way the camera, if left on by the manual switch, turns off when the ignition is turned off. How about this, just have the power to the camera and monitor turn on when the car turns on? Wait, the ford transit monitor is tied into the radio display, so if you have an always on trigger, you won’t see the radio menu screen? Tricky, but totally doable..

    ok great , thx, also this is good to know if you are pulled over by cops to turn it on and keep it on, without them knowing the car is in reverse using the camera. now we need a microphone and a way to store broadcast and or take still shots w cameras in front and on the side of the car, maybe a roof mount 360 degree cam and micro phone.... or an app to take video, sound and still shots, to use later in court.... also is there a way to hook up a back up cam kit to the front of the car and link it to the installed screen in the car to do the same thing? if they have a back up cam for reverse , can we have a cam wired to "drive" and "in Park" mode to take pictures in the car using the in car video screen too. or is there way to make the back up cam take still photos? I want to drive down the road and see a great sunset or deer or accident or someone in trouble and take a pic video and sound, all vehicles should have this, without having to pull over, bc there's no room to stop or pull over.... any wisdom to this effect would be greatly appreacitated .... wire your vehicle for any situation without having to use your phone.. maybe a shutter button on the dash or in the steering wheel buttons....mahalo and alona

    @Lesscoelectronics Could you make a video where you can manually switch between 3 modes "front-facing camera", "off" and "rear camera" ? The idea is to use a monitor/radio that only supports 1 video input but you can switch between 2 cameras (or multiple) and an off position where there is no video feed.

    Thank you for the very informative video. I am planning to install 2cameras with switches in my panel van. Can I ask: is it not simpler to run a new 12V supply to the rear camera instead of using the reverse light as supply? I recall reading the reverse light should be avoided as a supply, but cannot recall the reason. Perhaps your video is aimed at those with a reverse camera system already installed and who want to add a switch?

  • @kentix417

    @kentix417

    Yes, you need two separate supplies of power to the camera for this. At heart it's a backup camera so you need power to it when you switch your car into reverse. The easiest way to get that power is to tap into the line that supplies power to the white backup lights because that line gets 12V only when you put the car into reverse and it's already in the trunk area of the car. There's plenty of extra power in that line to power a backup camera along with the lights because the backup camera is very, very low power. But to have the switch option, you need a completely separate incoming power line that bypasses the wire feeding the reverse lights. So you need to run a separate wire from your switch on your dashboard to the camera. Those two incoming power wires, the one tapped into the backup lights circuit (for when you shift to reverse) and the one coming from the switch on the dashboard (when you flip the switch) meet where the two diodes are and become one line. That one line then goes into the camera. So either line will power the camera. What the diodes do is prevent the power coming from either line from feeding into the other power line. The only place the current is allowed to go is through the camera, which is what you want.

I have a boss head unit which has a button to initialize the back camera however being that I’m tied into the reverse lights it tells me to check the cameras power source. Since I’m not in reverse the camera isn’t getting any power to it. If I understand correctly you could power the camera through your toggle switch “ON” side. Sending power to the head unit for video feed while also powering the camera on. You may need to use a relay for this function.

I have two wires coming from my switch on with constant 12v (from radio 12v acc wire) and the second wire from switch tied into reverse cam trigger wire and reverse wire from twilight. I added 1amp 20v diodes and the switch triggers the radios reverse switch but the camera is not powering on.

    I think this is an issue with a factory reverse camera. I’m trying to figure out the same thing. The cam in the video will be constantly on thus when you toggle video feed the camera is already on to send image. With our case, or mine at least, I have a 2021 Ram with a factory reverse camera. That camera has some sort of switch that is only sending power while the truck is in reverse. If I’m understanding all these concepts clearly. In this case you would have to route power from the on side of the switch you instal to the camera also so that when you call for video feed you’re also powering the camera on.

    Any chance you have a wiring diagram for this? I understand the video, but not sure I know what everything was connected to. I have a sprinter van and I am going to install a aftermarket dbl din head unit with back up camera capability. I want the camera to come on when I flip a toggle switch and also when I put the van in reverse. I didn't realize I was going to have this problem with the reverse lights till I watched your video. I was really intrigued with the use of diodes. I've never used them before. Thanks.

    Honest question. Why not run two relays. Both feeding the camera, one triggered from reverse voltage signal, one triggered from a switch signal. That way you aren’t throwing codes pulling amperage from the reverse light circuit in newer cars, the camera gets clean power from the battery, and no messing around with diodes?

  • @jacobm9697

    @jacobm9697

    Voltage and amperage are different. Ohms are resistance. (R) Amperage (I) is how hard power is being pushed (Current) Voltage is power or electricity (E) In short, Ohm’s Law. For instance to get amperage you could know that you have a 4 ohm subwoofer in a 12 volt system (any modern car electrical system). To calculate amperage Ohm’s Law would suggest to divide voltage by resistance to get amperage (E/R=I). Which would look like 12/4=3. So 3 amps is what a 4 ohm subwoofer would pull in a 12 volt system. You can change the formula for each figure. Voltage or Power = E Amperage = I Resistance or Ohm’s = R To get amperage as you see above is E/R=I To get voltage you would use IR=E To get resistance you would again divide but this time using E/I=R

I have two camera inputs each with their own switch and on the deck i can switch between them. Question for you... why the extra diode to protect the switch? I can only see that for the case with led on the switch and to stop the led from coming on when in reverse. I only have a simple 2 prong switch and only use 1 diode to stop the reverse light from coming on when the switch is used.

  • @jacobm9697

    If I understand correctly and you still care by now lol the extra diode was only for the built in LED in the rocker switch to only be on when the rear camera was in manual override. Without the extra diode the blue LED would be illuminated at all times on the rocker switch because of the constant back fed power.

    I have a wireless backup camera monitor that is always on standby (dark) until it detects the camera wireless send signal, thus I need to install this on the backup camera circuit itself. The camera is hooked up to the reverse light. When car is put in R gear, reverse light lights up and thus camera gets power, monitor detects camera is ON and thus screen auto-activates to show camera image. If I want to turn the camera ON without putting car in reverse AND without running a switched +12v wire from the front, I am thinking of wiring up via diode to the license plate lights. If I want to turn camera on, I just turn on parking lights.... Do you foresee any problems with this setup?

    depending on the unit, cause they will vary.. I'd look for a .75-1.5 amp draw

    I think you really only need 1 diode. You just want to block the current going to the backup light when the switch is on....you don't care if the current flow comes from the switch or the backup light when you are actually in reverse....so putting the diode from the backup light to the camera power input will prevent current going to the backup light when you flip the switch. When you put it in reverse the power will come from the backup light through the diode which will be forward biased....might as well use both diodes though since they are cheap.

    I do have a question if someone may be able to help. I have a reverse camera that I installed on my 2003 CTS, but the camera only engages when I put it in reverse. And I still have to press the camera button on the stereo. Check this out, on my girlfriends Honda accord 02, her reverse camera works as soon as you turn the car on. So my question is, what exactly did I do wrong in my CTS? How do I need to wire it so I know the camera stays on and it doesn't have to be in reverse? Please and thank you

    Hi theres just something I don't understand.. When you have both of the diodes in.. There is a 12v source going to the switch and from the switch to a diode and on to the monitor.. then you have the camera connected to the reverse light and then to a diode and to the monitor... So.. When the switched is turned on.. how is the camera getting power?.. Wont the 12v source strictly be going to the Monitor alone?

    It called a ground. Both the switch and the brakelight share the same ground. The circuit comes complete when EITHER the switch is toggled or the brakelight is turned on.

    Is Android Auto/Apple Car Play available when the switch is off, or ? You show it as the options being drive with no screen, or drive with reverse camera displayed on screen with switch on. I think that girl better be hot for me to buy all that gear just to look backwards while moving forward.

    Lessco Electronics yes I tried quite a few diodes. Have the band on the reverse lights. The problem is when I do the double isolation the reverse trigger works and triggers the radio but no picture shows up. When I hit the switch the leg of the diode tied to the red reverse light wire from the back doesn’t get any power.
