How to wire two DC/DC chargers with external fusing in a Promaster van.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I show how and why I ran my #6AWG wire up to the battery in a Promaster van. The key point here is the mounting of external fuse blocks for ease of maintenance.

I’m loving these mini videos. I don’t like having fuses and breakers all over the van though. I really like them centralized. It takes a bit more planning, and ,Amy be less robust when adding wires after the fact, but as long as you have the ability to remove panels easily to route more wire I’m good.

Why not use the upfitter connectors located behind the panel at the base of the passenger side B pillar? They are fused for 70amp and use 6AWG/16mm2 cables and connectors. Works great. I ran my cables from the pillar, behind the sliding door track under the floor, and then up thru cabinetry on passenger side to the Orion charger in the back. Didn’t have to change any config in the battery bay.

I would run both reds to a single big fuse in the battery well. Also plastic conduit the reds. I know its tight, i shaved off some under carpet foam o mine. As configured atm, if the reds under the rubber carpet short to chassis. There is no fusing. Make the 2 chair fuses quick blow and the large battery fuse slow blow, then you get easy fuse service access and whole wire protection.

As long as that fuse is correct for 1 of the 2 cables. You can’t add the values of each cable and double the fuse rating. That way when you damage one of the 2 cables the full current of the fuse has to go trought 1 cable. (My 2 cents)

What a timely video! I was just about to pull the trigger on buying as much as 20 feet of 6/2 AWG duplex round DC marine wire for my 6 circuit sub panel; then I saw the size of a single #6 wire in this video. Holy Moly! so I'm crunching numbers again. So George, what size wire did you use to run to your sub panel in the Sprinter? I know, I know, it depends. But what did you do, what was you plan? Mine? Thank you for inquiring...Depending on where I put the distribution panel, 10-15 feet away from where I'll connect in the garage (20 to 30 ft round trip), max 15 amp draw if all connected devices were powered at the same time (all 12v devices)

As the only type of fuse one should worry about is Slow Blow and Instant. Slow Blow is for devices that draw higher currents for an instant. Then fall off quick. You use an instant. It will blow at the rated amperage. And that brings me to one thing people should learn. Not all fuses are rated for what they sell you. The cheaper ones can be deadly. As they will never blow. The wire will melt before it ever does. So you have to buy Known quality fuses from a manufacturer brand you trust.
