Thanks, this was very helpful. I recently bought my first mechanical watch (Hamilton Field Khaki, mechanical) and reading online there seemed to be no clear consensus on the proper way to wind a mechanical watch. This is a clear demonstration worth more than a million words posted in forums.

Thanks for this clear video. Just got a h50 Kfm and many say they’ve busted the main spring saying it was too thin and could not take the tension of a 80 hr power reserve. But I’ll be winding till it stops from now on.

You’ll know when it’s approaching full… I stop at 95% …. Once I feel it is full, I know I can get one more turn of the crown but never risk it! So yes…. I also wind full, or 95% full…. If you’ve got a repaired mainspring or a thin main spring, never push it to 100%… think about it like this… after we are 50 years old, do we want to lift the maximum weight possible? Absolutely not :)

Does help thanks VWS .. Haven't yet found the stopping point on my ~1980's Hamilton - There seems a fair amount of resistance whilst winding, but I can do so without applying too much force. I may take it out & attempt a full wind, now that you've demonstrated there is a safe winding limit. God Bless all Horologists 🕊⌚🕊

Do you need to wait until it stops ticking or can you just wind it up while ticking too?

I did this carefully and correctly. Broke the Hamilton twice and two other watches. Had no problems with my 30 dollar Waltham back in the 1960s . Going to TIMEX Indeglow. Nice big 2016 battery and lights up at night. No saphire crystal no problem. Just buy another one.

I’ve owned about 50 of these GG and never had one broken…. Out of about 1,000 other watches owned, only ever had one break and it was my fault for winding it too tight … it’s rare that a healthy spring breaks under gentle usage. Perhaps you’re very unlucky …. I don’t buy timex as they are nearly impossible to repair and often need to be replaced entirely…

I recently got one of these Hamiltons like the one on the video. When winding it it I hear a click sound. It’s not a click as it when you wind it(I can hear that too) but a diff click after about one turn. The watch keeps good time and runs. Any idea what that may be?

  • @vintagewatchstreet45

If the winding gets full and comes to a stop, that’s a good sign meaning your mainspring is not broken. If you wind and wind and wind and keep hearing a click and the winding never stops / gets full & right, then your mainspring is most likely broken…

@@vintagewatchstreet45 that may be it. I’m able to “wind it” by moving the watch and once it runs it keeps running. But trying to wind it with the crown only turns and clicks

I had my hamilton day date for around 1,5years and when it stopped I gave it ~15 crown turns to start it up (around 3 times a week). So after those 1,5years my rotor started to spin as I handwind, it also became stiffer. Went to my watchmaker and had to change few gears that were worn out. So be careful, I payed around 70eur for my mistake :)

I always recommend NOT hand winding automatic watches as it is not necessary… and adds wear to the machine parts. It is better to just shake an automatic Watch and let the rotor rotate naturally. In other words, I only hand wind watches if there is no other way to charge them up …. ~Lukas

A bit of a bummer since after winding and wearing the watch and putting it away for the night, it keeps being slow when I start wearing it again. ‚ in no time‘ ( like after 20 minutes) it is 5 to 10 minutes behind. Anyone experience this bug ? How about it Hamilton?
