HOW TO WIN A SCHOLARSHIP: HINT - DITCH THE CHECKLIST | DONOVAN TAPLIN | TEDXYOUTH@STJOHNS

TED is the infamous idea-sharing platform that has given ideas and issues from every corner of the world a global stage. TEDxYouth@StJohns takes this model to the community level - in our case, creating an event designed by youth, for youth, all under the age of 30.
Donovan is a storyteller and community builder. He studies Communications and Folklore at Memorial University. Donovan’s service is both local and global. Locally he is Newfoundland’s youngest Municipal Councillor. Donovan serves on the Wabana Town Council and the Premier’s Youth Advisory Committee. In the context of international cooperation Donovan was a delegate at the United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and a member of the Young Diplomats of Canada Delegation to the Y7 Summit in Tokyo, Japan. After travelling to the Arctic and Antarctic with Students on Ice, creating a keynote presentation program for high schools, and helping found a community radio station, Donovan was offered both of Canada’s largest merit scholarships, the TD Scholarship for Community Leadership and a Loran Award, valued at $170, 000. CBC Gen Why Magazine named Donovan one of "12 Young Leaders Changing Canada". Donovan is passionate about fighting stigma. Advocacy work in the areas of mental health and LGBTQ2S* issues are at the top of his agenda.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Damn, i spent my 17 minutes hearing this. Before you do the same what's related to scholarship is only: 1. There's no such ordinary and extra ordinary story, it depends. 2. Storytelling is hard, you need to learn. 3. Lets own our unique story, never disown it. It can be a matter to story telling 4. Whether you accepted or not, youre still worthy.

Wow I'm amazed that you thought you wasted your time. Perhaps you should "waste" another 17 and this time listen. And for everyone who is thinking of just reading this Arsh guy's checklist rather than spending 17 minutes listening to this talk, think again.

It's easier to get a scholarship as a poor working class kid because no one wants to give more money to someone who has plenty

It's ironic how everyone says this is misleading when it is literally all you need.

*summary* : own your story, don't try to customise it to what you think society wants to hear. accept humble beginnings whether you get the scholarship or not, you are still worthy

Hello, I am Jaden Stone. I am currently a freshman at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga studying Environmental Science. Is there anyway I could have Donovan's email address? I would love to talk with him about his experiences with the UN and the work he has done.
